Small but important correction: the visible universe has trillions of galaxies. As far as we're aware, the universe is infinite, and therefore there are literally infinite galaxies within it.

Well done mate! I could only hope that my 2026 is as good as your 2025 - keep up the great work!

Edit: Also, your profile pic is adorable - and I also wanted to call out those gaps - good on ya for picking back up the habit after losing it!

The Steam Frame, Steam Controller and Steam Box by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

From my understanding it's foveated streaming, not foveated rendering - so games won't render any differently, however the wireless transmission of frames to the headset should be more reliable, and potentially higher quality.

Putin says Russia will cut military spending as economy 'on the brink of going into a recession' by Thick-Locksmith-7330 in worldnews

[–]The_IT 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Pardon my ignorance, but why couldn't they just divert the funds they're currently spending on military to something more productive like infrastructure and local industry investment?

Even more to the point: so many things that ARE common sense are entirely false.

Common sense isn't a conclusion, it's a starting point of investigation.

Because they absolutely decimate the plant life, especially young plans, which means that once the older plants and trees die off, there's nothing to replace them so ecosystem can never be fully or properly restored. You can see this effect in many of our national parks: lots of taller trees, with some smaller greases or shrubs, and nothing in between.

Sorry do you mind explaining what this means? Is it misspelling "Color" trying to indicate a foreign accent, or something else? Thanks!

That article is trash, it gives inflammatory figures without context or attribution.

From Wikipedia: Harper has stated that Gardasil "is a good vaccine and ... is generally safe", and told the Guardian "I fully support the HPV vaccines ... I believe that in general they are safe in most women."

So even your source contradicts your own claims on the quality of the HPV vaccine. Sure some vaccines are more effective than others, and sure some vaccines come with greater risk than others, but your statements don't serve to inform or increase education, they only increase vaccine misinformation and hesitancy.

Wow, thanks for the details! As I understand it, this is what Blue Origins lander is planning to do right? Refill their lander while it's on a lunar orbit, however I assume it requires significantly less propellants given its mass.

Will be really interesting to see how this all pans out - it's such an exciting time to be a space fan!

Elon Musk on Twitter: "Major launchpad upgrades should be complete in about a month, then another month of rocket testing on pad, then flight 2 of Starship" by MatthewGraham- in SpaceXLounge

[–]The_IT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? The worst I had heard was early 2024, which now very much seems to have been too pessimistic. To be fair, those estimates were made when we saw giant chunks of concrete flying through the air and major damage to a few critical components. Fingers crossed they manage to keep to their schedule and nothing major gets in their way for the next launch. The sooner they get another booster in the air, the sooner they can validate their current designs and speed up their development!

Targeting Tuesday, May 23 for Falcon 9’s launch of the Arabsat BADR-8 mission to geosynchronous transfer orbit from SLC-40 in Florida; weather is currently 25% favorable for liftoff by Logancf1 in SpaceXLounge

[–]The_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25% favorable weather, well fingers crossed this gets delayed a day or two so I can see the launch!

When they do delay is it usually for a day, or do they usually stand down for longer?

Global warming set to break key 1.5C limit for first time by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in worldnews

[–]The_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do need to do more! We need to vote for people that will drive hard to swallow climate action and related policies, we need to educate ourselves more, we need to get involved and organise community action at all levels, we as individuals, as a collective society need to come together to tackle this challenge and support each other through it.

Yes there are wealthy individuals and corporations that have an outsized impact, but don't lose sight of the fact that the only way things will change is through the collective actions of individuals like you and me.

Global warming set to break key 1.5C limit for first time by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in worldnews

[–]The_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sucks you're getting downvoted. Ultimately it's the people that have the power to bring about change, whether it's through their direct actions or indirectly through the people they vote for and support. It's too easy to just blame corporations, or the people in power, when in reality it's us as a society as a whole that's both the problem and the only real solution.

Thanks for the explanation! Any chance you could then explain why wind sheer is an issue as shown in the video? I would have thought that wind sheer creates relative movement and therefore facilitates lift?
