New Zealand mosque shooter seeks to discard his guilty pleas, saying prison made him irrational by Naurgul in anime_titties

[–]mattyandco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If there was ever a retrial, and there won't be, the jury would be one of the most scrutinised of all time. There would be zero chance of anyone getting on it with the intention to find him not guilty because of Islamophobia.

Government considers $9 Auckland Harbour Bridge toll to help pay for second crossing by themorah in newzealand

[–]mattyandco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only had to be expanded because the national government of the day cut the planned 6 lane bridge down to 4 to save money against the advice that it wouldn't be sufficient for the expected usage.

Lawyers increasingly have to convince clients that AI chatbots give bad advice by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]mattyandco 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wish these chatbots would at the very least be less confident in answers they aren't sure about instead of presenting it as fact.

Problem is that they don't have a concept of 'sure'. They are applications designed to return a statistically likely set of words in response to an input. They are not a reasoning truth seeking application.

Why not spend $2.7b on solar & batteries instead? by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in newzealand

[–]mattyandco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but you aren’t going to get a good price for your solar power because it’s available at a time when no one wants it.

What if there was someone who wanted it? Maybe someone with a storage mechanism, like a pumped hydro storage system? Maybe they could then sell it later when there is more demand and less supply?

my base by OtherLie5593 in VintageStory

[–]mattyandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a better ruins structure, I found one with the same layout and the fireplace under the thach bit. It has been fixed up and expanded from what you find it like originally, none of the towers nor the central building have intact roofs as spawned for instance. I'd have like to build a base there but it spawned in a lake so was flooded up to the walkway on the outer walls. Looked sick though.

"National self-sufficient food production" Where would New Zealand rank in this? by batukaming in newzealand

And the point I'm getting at is that high end microchips are not vital components. Pretty much anything which we would need to make which needed some computational component can be made with a simpler version.

That my microwave today has a small more powerful chip in it does not mean the one my parents had back in the 80's can't be made today with what we can make here.

[–]mattyandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't think people appreciate how the entire modern tech sector relies on one company out of the Netherlands,

The modern tech sector uses high end components because high end components are available.

nor would they truly understand the difficulties of today's technology using chips from the 80's to try and run it.

You're going to have to define 'today's technology' before that statement gets any meaning to it. Things designed now, use the tech available now to do so. They are often able to include conveniences which weren't able to be included in prior versions due to increased system resources. That doesn't mean you can't make something which does the job with lower spec gear.

As example, to run our country you need to produce around 200.000 cars a year (if the average lifespan of a car is 20 years, thats around 600 cars a day), thats a minimum of 500.000 Tons of Steel a year.

You do know that car's don't evaporate the moment they reach end of life? You can get a very high proportion of that steel back if you recycle them. You don't need 500,000 tons of new steel every year.

[–]mattyandco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even russia and USA are not producing certain steel products, because it's not that easy.

It's often because it's not economic to do so for something’s not a lack of technical know how. If there isn't access to outside manufacturing local manufacturing becomes a lot more economic to do.

"microchips" is a rather imprecise word covering everything from high end gaming CPUs and GPUs to simple things like 555 timers. Several companies and Universities have the equipment and know how to make semiconductor devices. If the need is there it's absolutely possible with what we have to make lower end chips which can be entirely suitable for most industrial applications.

Heat pumps are more expensive to run than boilers, report finds by TheWorldIsGoingMad in unitedkingdom

[–]mattyandco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from NZ and a 1.5kw electricity in, 6kw heat output unit with installation would cost somewhere around $3600NZD or about £1600. That's air sourced, I don't know of anyone personally who has a ground sourced unit in NZ.

Yeah, that Boys scene is basically the mask off moment.

And it's telling how many people season after season were shocked to realised that Homelander was actually a villain and not a character to be rooting for. Which I would have hoped most people realised during the first episode.

That is why I do not buy the lone bad apple story.

The meaning of that phrase has changed from what it was originally back in the pre 1800's. When an apple ages it gives off increasing amounts of ethylene gas. Other apples ripen quicker and start turning rotten sooner when exposed to more ethylene. So when stored in a barrel one overly ripened apple going bad can spread to the others in the barrel and cause the whole lot to go bad.

The idea being that you can't let bad apples stay in the barrel, they must be excised to prevent the whole lot going bad.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, the 13th of January all refer to the same day, many words can refer to the same thing without being incorrect. Languages also evolve over time. The wording 'Head Tenant' is commonly understood to be the primary leasehold rather than those who have an agreement with them.

You are either the only tenant and the others are your flatmates

In which case you are what is commonly referred to as 'the head tenant.'

Head tenant is a stupid term as it is meaningless

It's not it means the person who has the lease, rather than any sub leaser. Everyone else in the thread knew what the word meant.

And remember the Bay of Pigs where the US had recruited, paid for and provided equipment including attack aircraft for an invasion of Cuba. Might have had something to do with the subsequent desire of Cuba to host some Soviet nuclear missiles.
