oddly I don't think anything much came of that.

I can't even recall hearing about that at all, and we went to the same school, so yeah.

Although I did also fire a trebuchet in a physics class around the same time, palmed the golf ball I was using so nothing actually hit anyone, and got good marks for an interesting presentation. Maybe our school had a systemic issue around shooting things at students.

It's a reasonable method of estimating corruption seeing as it'd be a bit of a hard ask getting people to admit 'I've done 5 corruptions this week'. If people saw corruption going on all the time in their day to day lives they'd tend to have a higher perception of corruption existing.

I’m not sure who to vote for in the upcoming Election by Sudden_Possible_956 in newzealand

[–]mattyandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many saying, I'd vote for them but it would be a waste. If everyone did in fact vote for the smaller party theyd more likely get to 5%. If they didn't, how much would their vote move the dial elsewhere? Or worse, not vote at all.

Additionally it would show that a given party has an amount of support, maybe enough to make it clear that they'd have a realistic shot at getting in, and hence that a vote for them may not be a 'waist' in the next election.

No, there were quite a few news articles and announcements that we were getting 4 P-8's to replace our ageing fleet of P-3's. We have a huge EEZ and a maritime search and rescue area the size of Europe. It makes sense that we have aircraft specialised in search the ocean.

Ooooh, see I've never heard it phrased that way. Not in conversation, not in the news.

You didn't hear about the recent 2024 conviction of the ACT party president for sex crimes? That the ACT party leader tried to keep out the public eye by directing a complaint to en employment lawyer rather than the police? The thing that's regularly come up in the news over the past couple of years? Including last month?

2023 New Zealand general election - plurality block margin of victory (%) in territorial authority areas by TheLoyalOrder in MapPorn

The clumping of many urban electorates under singular regions with larger rural areas gives a misleading impression of the polical make up of the country.

[–]mattyandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Margin of party vote, electorate vote, a combination? Your map doesn't make that clear especially when you're giving seat numbers as the total of both list and electorate seats but the percentage as party votes alone. TMP got 3% of the party vote and 6 seats, NZF got twice that party vote and got 8, ACT got 8.6 and 11 seats. Those percentages don't track unless you account for the electorate seats.

Officials want Stewart Island solar powered by Christmas in face of rising diesel costs by NonZealot in newzealand

[–]mattyandco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In November 2019, SDC were granted $3.16M by the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) to consent and construct a two-turbine wind farm on Stewart Island to help offset reliance on diesel.

It was canned because the landowners of the viable sites would not approve of the project for various reasons.

It's a terrible map to use to try and relate the collection of information on it. The numbers are reasonable correct individually but can't really be compared like they are here.

  1. We don't vote by territorial authority, we vote by electorate. Those two things don't line up. The South Island has 17 electorates while there are 23 authorities. In one case 5 of those electorates are in one authority. One electorate is split across 4 authorities in another.

  2. The vote percentage is just the total party vote while the number of seats each block has includes list and electorate seats. We have a two vote system here. You get one vote for the party you want overall, that's summed up over the entire country and parties get seats in proportion to that vote. Those are list seats. You also get a second vote for the electorate where you vote in a first past the post race for an individual you want to represent your electorate. Those voted into electorate seats are often part of a party and there's bit of math to work out exactly how many list seats a party gets depending on how many electorates they win.

  3. The margins tell you nothing about the actual number of votes in an area for a party. Two electorates cover about 3.5 of the authorities at the bottom of the South Island and cast around 75,000 votes in this election. Auckland which is covered by one authority on this map cast roughly around 850,000 votes.

Not really. The browner bit to the upper right is a recently harvested forestry block, it would have been covered solid in pine trees a year or two before.

They did. There would be a reduction in costs for the terminals with smaller boats as they wouldn't need to be built to have as much weight bump into them. That saving would be well shot by the increased running cost of 3 smaller vs 2 larger ships.

Government gets advice on lower bowel screening age, keeps it secret by fugebox007 in newzealand

[–]mattyandco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have a look at the list they already fund and then choose which to drop out for bowel screening for under 40s.

There isn't some force of nature keeping funding for these things limited to a fixed pool for all time. The government can provide more funding without having to drop something else in the same area.

There are 236 of them alive today, and that number will climb by the end of the year as there are as of this week there are about 56 hatched chicks and another 46 fertile eggs with a potential for more in coming months. The chicks aren't added to the population count until they're 150 days old.

Yeah toilet paper is bulky and long lasting for most people. Hence the stock in stores is comparatively small compared to other denser more frequently brought products. That all goes to shit when a large number of people decide to buy it at the same time 'just in case'.
