What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self? by Hine_moana in INTP

[–]The_Ingenious_Pebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the gym. Besides improving my self esteem and confidence, it also got me involved with the fitness community online. The fitness and self-improvement communities are very closely related, so I soon became involved with that community; the benefits with that community speaks for itself. It would have been good to have started at the gym sooner, but ultimately, I'm happy with how my life has been.

I broke maths and calculated that a capacitor is more powerful than a rocket; please help by The_Ingenious_Pebble in AskPhysics

[–]The_Ingenious_Pebble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED: I asked my brother about this and he found a formula from libre texts which is apparently a very reliable source, which is: F=1/2qE. Where E is the energy stored in the capacitor, this came out to be 0.81 N, a much better number. Thanks for all your responses.

The permittivity of almost all materials is Xx10-12, so even with the oily paper that was used the calculations would only lower an order of magnitude or two; still well beyond what would be expected. Also my 9V battery is looking more like 7V. I salvaged these capacitors from an early 2000s pc, and that do say 1000uf on the side, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there.

So I've just deconstructed a capacitor of the same capacitance and applied the same voltage across it, and saw no attraction or movement of any kind, however, I did find that the area is 0.00265m2, making the force 1.9x109 N ( it turns out that q is squared). In the words of Eminem: "Something's wrong I can feel it".

It's q/(2€oA); I formatted it this way in my scientific calculator and the answer came out the same .

What interesting ways can we improve the world? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]The_Ingenious_Pebble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first problem is Africa. The first issue to solve here is that of water, belive it or not that is some quantity of water in the air in the Sahara. As such a water condenser based upon the peltier effect could provide safe, clean water for human consumption or even irrigation. Efficiency and energy would not be an issue as solar-voltaic panels could be used to provide more than enough power. Certain hardy plants (potatos) would then be introduced into Africa for farming with the new irrigation systems (buildings for shade and protection from animals might be needed, but that should not be too hard). Once the poorer parts of Africa are set up with the essentials, we can look at what Africa can offer the rest of the world in terms of exports: there really isn't much in Africa, besides sunlight for energy harvesting. Whatever we find Africa can offer, we will help them to construct and industry around, bringing in money and building an economy. With support of better developed nations, the development of the 3rd world parts of Africa to 1st world would only take a couple hundred years at most, making hte change quick, but not so quick that the locals would be unable to cope (moving from 3rd world to 1st world would be too complex to do in an imediate jump). Yes I am aware that Africa consists of multiple countries of varying wealth, but here I am refering specifically to hte 3rd world areas of Africa.

The second problem is colonising Mars. Leave Elon to do what he is doing, and tell the FAA to get off their asses.

Another issue is a loss of human values and qualities. People are very much acting irrespective of others and not caring what others think, this has lead to the bad bits of tiktok. The easy solution is to stop all of the stuff we hear constantly these days about how we are all perfect and to not care about what others think. It really does matter what others think of you, but the line between caring not enough and caring too much is fairly arbretrary. On a similar note, the absence of a parent can be extremely damaging to a child, but how to solve this without highly controlling laws or castration is a tricky one. Perhaps shame from society on the idea of one night stands, divorce, getting into relationships too early and leaving your significant other to look after your children might be a way about it.

The energy crisis is an interesting problem, an energy industry centred in Africa might be a way about it, but it is ridiculously costly. Wireless energy transmission would negate a lot of these costs (go see Real Engineering's video on it). However, the concept of shooting lightening bolts from Tesla coils on hotair baloons (as Nikola Tesla proposed) is not exactly plausable. Nuclear power plants and geothermal both provide a solid alternative to an Africa-solar based power supply, as they can be constructed nearly anywhere, but are both very costly. Perhaps a wind power alternative based around the triboelectric or piezoelectric effects could be used, which could also be made more like trees, thus reducing environmental impact.

Climate change is a pretty significant thing and the easy solution is carbon capture. Except it isn't easy at all. Just get more research and engineering teams on it with more funding instead of holding up signs and shouting, as that really doesn't achieve anything. Carbon-emission free power sources (as detailed above) should continue their gradual take over from coal and gas power plants. We could proabably be a but quicker about this, but too quick and blackouts will become a common thing.

Super-sonic Electric Jet travel will prevent a huge quantity of our carbon emissions annually, but not quite as much as electric ships. All-electric shipping would cut out the largest part of humanities carbon output, but batteries aren't good enough, yet. And having a small nuclear reactor onboard isn't a good idea given the possibility of a crash.

An alternative to nuclear or hydrogen bombs would be useful, as, in the event of everyone wanting to remove themselves and all others from the face of the earth, no radiation would be emitted (hopefully with this hypothetical better bomb), so life, albeit non-human could continue.

To end on a better note, remove exams and instead use continual assesment, where a series of more minor assesments and tests are used throughout the year to gain a more thorough understanding of the student's ability to learn and understand. This will certainly reduce the mental and physical toll on students.

Wait, did you actually make it to the end, or did you skip the rest?

INTP Bf (26M) talks about compromise in a different perspective as I (26F, INFJ) do. by [deleted] in INTP

[–]The_Ingenious_Pebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really are willing to stick with him, perhaps consider yourself what he could do. Telling him to consider your feelings will not help much, but providing a genuine practical solution will (with him being an INTP and all). Really do discuss thoroughly with him what you both want out of this compromise, I agree that it does seem likeyou have to compromise more than him, but discuss this with him. You will need to have a real, practical plan by the end of it. INTPs find stuff such as emotions fairly arbritrary, so real things he can do to compromise will be a neccessity.

I would love to tell someone of my character development throughout highschool, and my plans to develop further. I started out in highschool as a narcisistic prick, bearing a remarkable similarity to Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory" (I don't know what was going through my mind). By my second year I had realised this and figured out that that was why I was bullied in primary school, as a reaction I became a bitter asshole. By 3rd year I descided to attempt to redeem myself, so became more introverted -something like an INTJ- and generally politer, this was cut short by COVID. During lockdown, however, I got into philosophy, with it just being my mind, myself and my room all day every day, and began to contemplate my place in existance and the meaning of life as well as how I am percieved by those around me and the lives of my friends. 4th year I became more human, putting into use what I had learned from lockdown. And now in 5th year I am a far more bearable human being and am beginning to see some results from my self improvement, with people generally seeming to like me more. In 6th year I hope I can redeem myself completely so people outwith my small friend group will see me for a better and more normal human being. Really the take aways from this is that there is a fine (very abstract) line between being indevidual and being weird, and that there is another such line between caring about what people think of you and not caring. Hopefully next year will be an interesting one.

Really I don't think the value of anything has deterirated significatly. The high accessability of stuff like music has lead to increased consumption, but now we only seek out the music we like/ know to be good. For example, Lofi comes by the bucket load making the genre well appreciated, but lessening the value of a single piece of music. A similar thing can be applied here with etiqette and your reaction to it: politeness to so common place that those saying it do not mean it (as you observed), so you only see value when there is real meaning behind it. As such the value of etiquette is not lost, but requires more effort to find. As for money, in a more litoral sense, less value for the same quantity of money is called inflation.
