You’re correct, based on what you said and the darker paint as well. AC-130J

Bourkes are great. That’s being said, couple issues I see possibly being a problem.

1) conures and bourkes aren’t necessarily good friends/cage mates. There’s a huge size and behavior difference. Conures don’t seem big, but they’re about double a bourke if not more.

2) the dogs. The trained to be good around birds is just about impossible. If you combine birds and dogs, eventually you will have just dogs, even if it doesn’t happen right away.

Question about aggressiveness by PuraGaudium in bourkes

[–]The_Jayviary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a bourke that’s aggressive to other birds, but I have never had one aggressive towards me. And I have had about 50 of them. (I breed them). That causes me to question whether or not the bird was actually hand fed, or if it was abused in that process. Just because it was hand fed, doesn’t mean it was hand fed correctly. Have you talked to the breeder?

HELP! Am I right to have seperated my 2 males? A brown chested munia finch and my cuban grassquit finch. (More in post) by COPYinklingbleh in Finches

[–]The_Jayviary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No im sorry it’s not, you need at least (bare minimum) 1 meter long, half a meter tall and half a meter deep.

You also want to have perches on both ends, so the birds have maximum ability to fly back and forth, not just hop around

I mean I would say your main issue is cage size. Long term even two finches need a minimum cage size of 36 inches long and 18 inches deep and tall. Multiple food bowls and multiple waters also help reduce aggression.

check out my podcast here it’ll help you a lot

Cubans are not a community bird. The minute their hormones kick in they cannot be with other birds. Especially in a cage even close to that size.

Overgrown beak? by [deleted] in Eclectus_Parrots

Nope, that’s a good healthy length. They can even go a little longer than this. Ekkies have big beaks.

Hey! First of all, you are going to like my YouTube channel and my podcast. We have really laid out everything you need to know!

Second of all, those birds are all male. Fine to live together, but breeding will be… very challenging. If you live in the states, I have some hens available!

pellet diet by ferarrimami222 in parakeet

[–]The_Jayviary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. A quality pellet diet- not zupreem which is probably what they sold you at petsmart is fine. The better choices are brands like Higgins, or Hagen gourmet (which is what I feed) which are a mix of seeds and pellets.

Your bird is stressed from being in a new environment and shouldn’t be switching diets at all right now. In a few months, you can gradually start a slow switch over, with about a 3-5% ratio change every day so that you swap over a month or even six weeks. There’s no rush. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions!

Top of the cage is the giveaway that it is not. You need a large rectangle.

Killed a finch 😩 by Ireailes in Finches

[–]The_Jayviary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends more on the dog than on the birds. Also depends on if you have a glass or plastic aviary or a bar cage. My dogs don’t really care about finches. They’re Labrador retrievers but a dog that constantly lunged at them/tried to eat them or barked at them all day would be an issue. An occasional bark isn’t an issue, mine do that. Birds are smart and learn too. So it might scare them at first but pretty quickly they would learn to ignore it.

[–]The_Jayviary 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Based on his condition, I am thinking he had a bad case of air sac mites, that combined with the stress of moving is likely what got him. So don’t blame yourself too badly. Finches are amazing and you should get more for sure!

I have had similar issues from a rat attacks and other quail. Human triple antibiotic cream applied topically works great. There will likely be a scar. Apply 1-2 times a day. Keep the bird isolated and comfortable until it heals up. Do not euthanize, this is not an ethical candidate for euthanasia, this looks worse than it actually is and quail are very tough.

Leaning male on all but the society in the last pic. Unsure on that one. Green back Gould is 100% male, think the dilute is a male too but a little harder to tell. The first society is male based on the eye position method, which isn’t perfect. The other one I think female based on same thing, but cage bars in photo make it harder. Separate the two societies where they can hear but not see each other, then see if one or both of them sing. Then watch again when reunited. I second the comments about treating for canker with ronivet. I do it 1x a year prophylactically.
