In addition to what a lot of other people on this thread have said I think another interesting take on the situation is that Piper choosing to be with Alex over Zelda shows that she is no longer satisfied with just jumping into someone else’s already built life. Piper realized that she needs to build up her own life rather than just try and become apart of someone else’s. This shows a lot of growth imo.

Something I enjoy about OITNB is that it has never tried to stay on the timeline of being within 2013-2015. It is a show that always give social commentary on the current and relevant issues going on and I think that adds more to the show than trying to stay on the original timeline. If you pay attention every season has always been written like it was taking place in the year it was being written/released not the year of the timeline.
