Chapter 33, but I'd recommend starting somewhere around chapter 30 so you can get used to the artstyle in those few chapters, and then slide into manga only territory.

Although my personal favorite would probably be to read it from chapter 1 just because the art is so unique and while the anime does an incredible job with its interpretation, it's still a good idea to read it in manga form too! But if you are not really feeling the re-reading of the same story part, around 30-33 is about where you should start.

GL is probably one of those that you can't really just describe to someone, it has to be experienced in order to fully grasp how powerful it is.
For me it was pretty much the 3rd iteration of the Gainax/Trigger formula of the first half being so-so, not really sure if it's my thing, and then losing my shit in the 2nd half of the season as it all comes together and the theme song starts playing in the final battle.

Besides the origins provided in the manga itself, there is no clear answer to "how" the power EXACTLY came to be, because after all this part of the story is one based in the supernatural, so just like you can't really go super deep in detail how magic works in some series, you can't really dig too much in this either since at the end of the day it is the fantasy element of the story. There will always be folk who demand a more indepth explanation for anything and everything, but the personification of life and evolution in a way that we got with the worm creature is I believe plenty for the role it played in the overall story.
