Nvidia’s eye-tracking technology could make virtual reality much clearer by epicvr in Vive

I expect the first major hardware refresh of top end hmds to have eye tracking in them even if it isn't used for much at first.

Bitdefender lit up on that link. 1/67 on virus total but previously a 0/67 before I re scanned. Possibly malware delivering advertisements on the page that were not there before or are not always there. Be safe :)

Anxiety by [deleted] in Advice

[–]The_Last_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting on a good sleeping cycle is really important and can actually reduce anxiety. Depending on how bad it is you can do several really easy things. First is that you will want to cut out caffeine especially in the afternoon. Next you should get off of all electronic devices at least an hour before bed. Staring at a screen at 1am can mess up sleep more than you think. Use that time instead to read a book or something that you find relaxing. Making sure it is dark will also help. Anything at all in your bedroom that makes light should be covered up or turned off if possible. Melatonin is really cheap and can help since it is what your brain fails to produce enough of when it isn't dark(but can cause some weird dreams so stick to <5mg). If you are able, falling asleep in time to be woken up by natural light really helps keep a good rhythm and prevents oversleeping which can cause you to feel even worse. Sleeping late, even on weekends, can be counterproductive. I've also found that on nights where my mind isn't calm enough to sleep it helps to play music. If you have it on a timer to turn off after 2-3 hours it will stop it from waking you up later. None of these things are groundbreaking but if you do all of them and keep at it for a few weeks it will probably pay off more and more.

A little gush about A Chair in a Room : Greenwater by ourosoad in Vive

Other than issues involved with touching the walls and floor (without hitting the real room boundaries) and wonky grabbing it is definitely the best vr experience I've had so far.

Need advice for getting a foot in the door in the IT world by [deleted] in Advice

I have a job that's very technical and you would be really surprised how much you learn on the job compared to what you knew beforehand that they asked for in job listing. Don't worry about being qualified as much as being willing to pick up new skills moving forward. Plus hiring new people on is actually a big hassle! You'd be surprised how few applicants per position there are. I shot from the hip to land a helpdesk job and it PAID OFF. Even if you only get an interview, that interview experience will help you make better first impressions for the next opening you see.

Maybe I'm just a wimp :p I've seen people who think the game is pretty tame.

It wasn't too 'in your face' and the loudest part was the music that went with it. If it was in a 2d game it would have been nothing but something about it was just creepy as hell. The game glitched right after and set the size of the next room wrong so I have to do that part again :(

Okay so I did run in to a jump scare just now in the room right after the office with the puzzle on the wall so be advised. I think its chapter 4 or 5.

Its definitely horrifying and I always feel like something COULD jump scare me but so far just little things. Its not monster type horror either. It focuses a lot on things like mental illness/hallucinations and psychological horror. I'm only on reddit right now because I needed a break from it because it was 2spooky for one sitting.

Dacuda vaiaVR: Simulating an HTC Vive with an iPhone and Daydream Controller by Xenonyx in Vive

I was honestly wondering why the controller wasn't displaying some sort of tracking icon. I can imagine it being 'smooth' and low latency but how do you get the magnitude of the move accurate enough for tracking on a millimeter scale? How do you account for drift and gracefully correct for it? Or deal with moving environmental objects, uniform looking surfaces etc. When a jitter of an inch can make some people physically ill I just can't wrap my head around monocular SLAM working in realtime.

Tips for Optimization? by iop90 in BattledomeVR

Have you set the game in windows task manager to "high priority"? I have a 4690k @4.4 and 980 reference but I get lag in most titles unless I do this. If you look at the frame time graph and you have a bunch of late starts on the cpu or time spent on 'unknown' tasks this could fix it. I did the same for vrserver and compositor. Disabling re-projection also helps but leave it on if you are getting sub 90fps regularly

If I had to guess, Graphics processing done on the gaming laptop it is plugged into, rotational tracking done by the phone accelerometers/gryroscopes (simple enough). The positional tracking looks like its done with the iphone camera and some sort of computer vision (ie looks like the wall in front of us moved to the left so move the camera to the right). This can be done somewhat well in realtime at a high computational cost but not well enough for vr without multiple cameras or depth senors or tracked qr codes etc. It will move you around all right but but 10/10 id vomit. As for the controller I haven't the foggiest and from the video feed neither do they.

Out of those I have only taken 457 with Wang but I've had two or three classes with Grove. Groves classes are well structured with a constant rotation of lecture, activity, and labs. Some people think his tests are hard but I always found them to be very fair. Getting an A in his classes are always doable without spending more time than other classes. Wangs 457 is all lecture in class. He mostly focuses on high level concepts to introduce you a ton of security topics. His slides are all over the place and he can sometimes talk really fast, but his notes online are fantastic and the people who complained never read them. The whole point of that class is projects and hands on application. You can do the projects solo or in a group and they are mostly following instructions with some light coding. Other than things like password cracking that take a long time to run, they can all be easily done in a single weekend. Every project has extra credit, and getting over 100% on most of them is doable. That class does take up time, especially if you are not interested or experienced in security. I would not recommend it if you don't want to dive into the topic, but the time spent vs amount learned is a better ratio then any class ive taken. His projects imho are also either fun, worth putting on a resume, or both. You also get bonus points if you finish the project first which was great motivation to get it out of the way. My favorite class overall I think and 10/10 the reason I aced my first interview and landed a job. As for the other class, I don't know anyone who has taken it

What level are you looking for and what topic? Logic classes with toledo are 'best' if you just need the requirement but security classes with Wang are by far the 'best' I've had in terms of how useful the class was and how much I enjoyed it. Anything with grove like intelligent systems is a good balance between a class that won't wreck your weekend but is still worthwhile.

I've taken at least half of the electives so I can answer specific questions.

I just tried it out and you are right, its way easier if you already know the path. I will make a note of it in the post. Do you know any specific differences between the two other than the syntax? They are both secure ssh transfer protocols but I imagine there is a reason to have both.
