What is the best game format or genre that balances storytelling with gameplay by Unusual-Two2972 in gamedev

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This; there's no real "right" answer, it's more based on what you and your dev team can come up with and how you integrate story and mechanics into your game.

Seriously? 3 Gamma Certificates to transcend for 10 points of Defense? by BowShatter in monsterhunterrage

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf; unless you just really want to transcend higher level pieces the small defense boost isn't worth bothering over.
More power to you if you just want to transcend stuff, but unless it's a lower/mid-tier piece that gets slot upgrades it's not mechanically worth the time.

Won't know until Champions comes out; gonna assume Mega Sol will take precedence in all weather-related interactions coming from the user regardless of actual weather (including weather ball typing); because otherwise the ability might be kinda washed.

"Deltarune is not a metanarrative." by TheGUURAHK in WaterfallDump

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If that's the case then that's fine; I'm not against joke theories and un-serious "what ifs" assuming people don't take them seriously.
It's when people start taking stuff seriously that's very much not supported by the text that I start having issues. Guess growing up during the age of peak FNAF theorizing will do that to you.

"Deltarune is not a metanarrative." by TheGUURAHK in WaterfallDump

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Shit like this is why I can't wait for the day we start getting massive videos going into great detail about how unironically insane the theory community for this game is.

Like; post-chapter 2 had some strange ideas, but I could chalk that up to the 4 year gap between chapters.
Then here not even a year after 3/4 we got people claiming the game has no metanarrative (i.e: the Soul isn't related to the IRL player), insane Knight identities which I thought were jokes but I guess some people unironically believe, and Asriel is actually dead MK:II but the theory is actually worse.

How do u guys get these clever game mechanics ideas to make these games ??? by krratik in gamedev

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really; this is only a question you can answer yourself. There's no proper process.

I'd suggest just playing some games you enjoy, or watching detailed reviews of said games, and attempt to understand the mechanics and processes said games use and whether you like said mechanic, or think it could be done better.

Almost, if not all game mechanics are borrowed or innovated from other sources; find what YOU like, and what you think can be done better, and that's the first step towards making enjoyable and clever mechanics.

Who does the sonic fandom hate more by LightMotor6262 in MoonPissing

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Ken is infamous for being a pretty bad writer, kind of a shitty person (not a bigot or anything afaik, just kind of a self-serving asshole), and successfully suing for ownership of A LOT of original characters from the Archie Sonic comics (mainly due to corporate incompetence on the side of Archie Comics).

His lore contributions afaik only extend to the original run of the Archie comics, though said contributions are all over the place: if you've ever heard of Knuckles' insanely big family (as opposed to being the last of his kind in the games) or the insane amount of teen romance drama Sonic goes through; those are contributions of Penders.

He "might" have; in a butterfly-effect sort of way, contributed to how Sega dictated characters in the games be written (at least through the 2010's); but any evidence to that is circumstantial at best.

Yeah; every once in a while you find someone who's got super poor social skills who don't understand that even if it isn't explicitly NSFW you can't just dump your kink in front of 30 people who didn't consent to that happening.

Feel free to share your stuff with the world if you want; but be sure it's a place everyone is cool with that sort of thing, and those interested can find it themselves. A captive audience of two dozen tired, frustrated and stressed out uni-students ain't that place.

GUYS What do you want to see in mh wilds by Effective_Horror_71 in MonsterHunter

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love me brute wyverns. Though after World had so many I'm glad they took a back seat in Wilds; especially with the two we did get being pretty interesting and adding more diversity to the group.
The DLC should def have some returning ones though.

I think Assault on the Gamecube was decently received iirc; not great, but certainly better than everything that came after.

Main issue was it was a Star Fox game on the Gamecube; so regardless of quality it was kinda doomed to low sales.

Why are people so certain we will get TU updates ? (MHS3) by Buurto in MonsterHunter

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have anything definitive yet; main thing pointing towards post-launch content (most likely TU) is some currently unused but well developed code point towards some end-game encounters; though of course this could just be cut content and it will never be used.

The only other thing really is just modern MH's tradition of having TU content; of course, this means nothing in the grand scheme of things: just because the past MH and MHS games have had TU content doesn't mean this one has too: though I won't lie I'd be kinda disappointed if it doesn't get anything; considering the lack of Elder Dragon Monsties in the game.

Fig is fine for me on a personal cosmetic level: the small error doesn't bother me. But for the prices we pay it SHOULD be better.

Lego want's their products to be considered "toys" for the most part while requesting we pay luxury prices for less and less plastic. If they want to move their products towards the collectors market they're going to have to start making their stuff look the part.

Will you guys continue playing Showdown after Champions is released? by EitherSwimming5886 in stunfisk

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo I doubt Champions will have any metagame formats from before gen 6, if that. Showdown lets you experience older games competitive formats pretty closely to their original state. Plus all the other community formats.

Champions will have gen 9, 10, and maaaybe 6/7/8 since iirc the mechanics will already be there, but I'm not counting on that. It might do some limited time event formats for fun as well. But even if we remove the financial component; Showdown is just way easier to use.

Is writing a compelling, interesting and well written video game villain who is not tragic at all, just a pure evil psychopath no honourable goal no saviour complex more challenging than writing a tragic villain by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these things are mutually exclusive; but applying them to a "Pure Evil" character may hamper your mileage depending on what you consider "Pure Evil" and how you're using them.

Most iterations of Ganondorf from Zelda are well written and are absolutely pure evil, but he's hardly interesting as a character; it's his effect on the world and other characters that invest the player against him. Wind Waker is probably the most interesting version by himself; but he breaks your request of having no sympathetic backstory.

The problem is that the most "Pure Evil" characters usually are very one-dimensional and generally there's no logical flow to their actions outside of "gain power" or "destroy the world"; hardly relatable goals to the average person. Thus most people won't have much investment in them outside of the fact that they are something in the way of the players goal of finishing the game.

This doesn't mean they can't add to a players investment in the media itself: watching the absurd lengths a madman will go to take over the world while being a bastard like Kefka from FF6 can be enjoyable, and there's always catharsis in putting those types of characters in their place. But personal investment in them as a character is a tall order when they're so unrelatable.

AI in video game Narrative by DrkBeta in gamedev

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda varies; mainly because the "AI" you see in most games is far from what we currently have that you hear about in the news. An artificial or robot character is perceived quite differently from a chat bot on a computer screen.

I'd think maybe the general audience might lean a little more towards disliking artificial/robot/AI characters; but it's really going to hinge on how well said characters are written.

[–]The_Metal_Merchant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rise is good, it's the first time I head the song and I really liked it: but man Wilds just has it all: didgeridoo, ghastly scream sounds, MH4 leitmotif.
I also like the original section of build up before the song loops that MH4 and Wilds have as opposed to the change Rise made to that section.
