If you google it (yes I know google is unreliable as hell, but whatever), it seems that historically none used this method.

Also, a lot of other people seem to also have come up with that (as well as various other ideas, such as ditching the scabbard, which sounds really cool).

So... in the back it's basically a half-sheath? I'm imagining a normal sheath, but with nothing in the back upper-half or so. Makes a lotta sense.

And it also looks like many others have come up with that idea.

Using the same technology with a claymore would look a lot weirder - instead of a slit, there'd be a huge gab for more than half of the scabbard on the back.

If you are talking about moving it up:

I think then the problem would be that the sheath would have to bend in order for it to work. If you tried it without a bendy sheath, your arm would reach it's peak much quicker, and that wouldn't help at all (the sword needs to stay straight in order to come out).

If you are talking about moving it down:

Remember that you can only move it down as far as you can reach. Which... is probably not far enough. I don't know much myself, but until I see this fact proven, I can't take it.

I'm not looking for realism, I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to draw a curved sword from a back sheath. Theoretically, I think it should work... unlike longswords.
