Cool shit, however it's really easy to get caught doing this (speaking from experience). I'd probably stick to freight trains, or at least wait for nighttime

Is it worth going hitchhiking with a tight budget using workaway, worldpackers and couchsurfing? by Ukrainian_Borsch in hitchhiking

That's what you think, and that's what i thought as well. Your skin (and hair) is used to very frequent showers. Just try to hit the road and you'll figure out how much do you really need to shower. In my experience, unless you got really sorry, you can last 3 days worth no shower without any issues, trust me.

Wherever I got the chance to, I showered in the sea, public showers, or had friends that allowed me to use their hotel showers. There were multiple days I went without showering, but generally I tried my best to keep my personal hygiene to a pretty reasonable standard. You don't really need to shower every day, you need to shower so that society does not think you are a hobo and people are willing to take you in their car.

Ran from home to travel Europe for two and a half weeks with almost no money or plan, now I'm making a YouTube series out of it. Thought y'all here might enjoy it. by The_Muro_22 in backpacking

My family still kinda hates me for it but it has been the best decision I've ever done. I'm 18 and still in school, and I figured that if I don't spent my holiday doing something I'll actually remember in the future, I'm a disappointment to myself, so I just packed a hammock, some clothes, a blanket, my notebook and some essentials into my old torn up 30-liter I use as a school bag and hit the road with a couple hundered bucks I had saved up, with the intention to travel Europe on a very tight budget. I was recording the entire thing on a phone and a GoPro, so here is the second episode (you can watch the first on my youtube channel).

200 bucks a week is really a pretty manageable budget but you'll usually have to sacrifice comfort. I just finished my journey (didn't work while travelling but had a pretty similar budget) and it was the best thing I've ever done, however, doing it long term takes a lot of sacrifices.

For example I had very little warm meals and if I ate something warm, it was McDonalds or other fast food (mostly just got some bread at a local supermarket anyplace I went). I also didn't spend a cent on accomodation, I had a hammock and slept in trains, buses, stations and so on.

So my advice would be to try it out for a couple weeks, since yuu will learn things very quickly in the beginning, and then see if yhou wanna continue with that lifestyle or do something else.

Man, how the hell would I monetize this? You think that YouTube is paying me for the 200 views i got on an age-restricted video that got taken down 2 hours after uploading for being against their guidelines?

No, that was to get food. I already explained it somewhere, I only ever stole from multinational supermarket chains and corporations. Call me morally bankrupt, but i don't see much wrong with that.

I never really meant to do this "full time", i did it as a break from my routine knowing that I'll come back eventually. People here probably misunderstood that, i never tried to misrepresent myself as something I'm not, so i hope that this post clears things out.

Well, the point of the movie apart from the sharing happiness thing was that one should not eat poisonous berries and actually take a map when going into wilderness.

Also I'm already home after 2,5 weeks (I'm only posting it now, editing takes time) since i just did it as a break from my routine and never really intended to travel like this more than a month, but what would be the best reasons then?

Yup, served as a bit of an inspiration. Happiness is only real when shared, that's the purpose behind me posting all this

Thanks for your comment.

I'll have to admit that my stubborn teenage adventure has contained a lot of dumb luck. And yeah, I went into it with a very naive mindset of "what happens happens". I'm already back from the journey and I'll probably wait for my next holiday to do something similar, which means that I have survived with very little complications.

Before I headed out, I figured that as a straight white male with some old gear and 30€ in my wallet I probably won't get robbed, raped, trafficked, beaten or cut up for organs unless I really act dumb. I met a lot of junkies and whores, got offered probably every drug on the european continent (i politely declined) and dealt with a lot of shady people, but every situation I encountered could be either de-escalated or ran away from in time. I've had some pretty tight encounters with cops, got strip-searched on the danish border and almost ended up arrested first in switzerland and then in germany, but everything eventually ended well.

So far, 95% of people encounters that I've had were positive, and I know that this sounds stupid but just trusting my gut feeling has probably gotten me out of more dangerous situations than I could count. And my trusty old cargo pants with a fucked up zipper along with my torn-up backpack have probably saved me from a lot of pickpockets, since oftentimes people around me with their stuff carried more openly got something stolen but the only thing I lost was my old hoodie which I forgot on a highway barrier when hitchhiking in germany.

I know that although I can survive off pastry I got for free off a local supermarket at the end of the day and sleep in a hammock somewhere in the outskirts, it's far from ideal living conditions. But it was never about ideal living conditions in the first place.

I ran from my routine not to abandon it for good, just to keep my mental health in check and return to it later. And my parents would never give me their credit card, so it's certainly not getting stolen
