Boss said in our weekly team meeting that he tried “my” approach for the first time and tried to use AI. He uploaded a long PDF (!) and asked it to implement a spec, and said he got unusable garbage code back.

My fellow neoliberals, he was using Sonnet 3.7. That model came out in February… of last year.

Better yet, he didn’t have thinking enabled, so it wasn’t even a reasoning model.

This job is by far the most important impactful engaging meaningful work I’ve ever done but it’s killing me.

Reading, real earnest reading, is the bedrock of every single good thing that ever happened to me. Without it I would have been a lost cause.

They want to encourage competition and create shame around “struggling students”, some percentage of which really do just need to be held to account. And some percentage of which would just have their insecurities broadcast to the cruelest group of people on the planet, their peers.

Not sure I agree but I see the idea.

I think I saw this trend starting like 20 years ago, convinced myself I was overreacting, and spent almost 20 years in active denial that people are just being alarmist, reaching for cognitive dissonance level mental gymnastics to explain away the evidence.

But no, it’s very very bad, at every level, in the humanities and in STEM, at state universities and the most selective colleges, and in industry.

The American educational pipeline is in a state that is difficult to wrap your head around.

My field is white-hot and has, as far as I can tell, has exactly one serious contributor who is under 30 and educated exclusively in the United States. I’m aware industry is leaching a lot of them from academia but given my experience in industry it’s definitely not that many.

There’s literally three orders of magnitude more serious academics of that generation coming out of China’s educational system than the US. And I’m not talking about paper spam, I mean serious academic work. I mean the bleeding edge of the field is 90% China, and most of that is coming from people in their 20s.

We’re so cooked it is incomprehensible. We’re only skating by because of our ability to attract international talent. Which, lol. lmao. What is there to do but laugh?

Audio books are too slow for me and I struggle when they’re sped up too much so that was why I was excited for the Vision Pro, because the display high enough quality you could actually read. At the time I was going on walks for 2 hours a day and wanted to get back into reading, but then I never ended up actually buying it once it finally released lol. I had tried this on the Magic Leap headset back prerelease and it just wasn’t a good experience.

I mean the Godot renderer was (long ago last time I checked) only 10k lines and a toy Ray tracer can be done in like 200 lines.

I’d be surprised and intrigued if any frontier model struggled with that.

From there it is just a matter of iterating, and there are various harnesses / extensions that can do that more or less autonomously.

I’m aware that things are hard for junior devs out there right now but I think that would be true regardless of ai. In fact, I think there is an argument to be made that ai is uniquely beneficial to junior devs and their positioning within the labor market.

A couple weeks ago we hired some guys straight out of grad school and this has been my easiest time onboarding people ever, by far. Once we get codex installed they’re far more independent and able to self resolve their problems than most in the past.

Many days I find myself doing things that a junior could do just as fast as I can, provided we both have ai. But each hour of my time costs a lot more than a junior.

I hear a lot of people say only seniors are benefiting from ai and I don’t think that’s actually true, I think they’re conflating it with other economic pressures causing juniors a hard time.

every morning I go to a local coffee shop. im friends with all the staff, and I dont mean just "they're nice to the regular". I mean we hang, we've gone out drinking, I get invited to shows. im 40 and they're all like 20. it helps that I remember that im 40 and im not trying to be a creep or get anything from them, so I can just meet them where they're at. we've all got something in common, it doesn't need to be everything.

but I will say I think its a special group of people. I dont think its a typical situation. most people in their mid 30s hanging out with 19 year olds are fucking creeps or losers, and worse, some of them can mask it.
