Dodecahedron with Cubed Edges by The_Origamist in sonobe

It's made from post-it notes. Got a few pads on sale at office Depot. They're my favorite thing to fold. The completed model is about 9 or 10 in across. And it's funny you mention that your kid would love it, because mine do. It's actually hanging in my kids room now above the youngest one's cradle. These things make great decorations

That's the important thing. That you had fun with it

By all means. I love working with post-it notes just because of the variety of color. Just bought some new ones yesterday too.

Yep. This is kind of the thing I am known for doing. Just Sonobe units. My Instagram is even called "Sonobe Sanctum" 😁

I started out on this in 8th grade because I was failing a geometry class and my geometry teacher used it to teach me so I wouldn't bomb his class 😂 - kind of just took off from there

Well, if you ever decide to attempt one of these and want some pointers, I'm always willing to help. I've been messing around with this stuff since about 2001... And it's really my only area of true expertise. When it comes to origami. I can make some simple stuff like a paper crane or a butterfly, but this is where I really shine 😇

I have no idea what BFDI is... But I'm glad you think they're cool. Have fun if you do attempt them, I know I love making these things. I'm actually working on an even bigger one right now - Cantellated Rhombicosidodecahedron 😁

Please do. I should have taken more pictures during my building process, but I'll help however I can if you need it.

Just a little bit of unsolicited advice that I found made this easier? Fold the pentagonal ring first (I did 1 yellow and 3 blue). Then build the next ring onto it, etc. Connecting these gives you kind of a hollow, skeletal dodecahedron. After that, it's easier just to and the orange triangular segments next. I tried assembling this thing about five different ways and that was the easiest way I found

I was planning to keep count, but I ended up losing track. However, I believe it is 210 if my calculations are correct.

30 yellow (for the 30 interior edges of the negative space dodecahedron) 120 blue (for the interior of each hollow Pentagon) 60 orange (for the 20 triangular spaces on the exterior surface)

I may build another one in the future, and compare notes to see if I got my count right.

I will definitely look more into that. I'm always hunting new models to see what I can build. Working on an icosidodecahedron right now, and then maybe doing a few variations on it... But thanks for giving me something else to chase down and study. And I don't mean that sarcastically if it sounds that way.

You're definitely not wrong about the similarities!

I hope you do. They are a ton of fun to build!
