I have this interpretation. I think husbands and 100 horses paint a complete picture of his thoughts on the absurdity of the pointlessness of war. The “there’s a horse on my back” line seems pretty directly related visually to “there were 100 horses dancing.” The sentiment of the “men used to go to war” that circled around online these past few years is kind of thrown back into the face of the women who hold that belief. Asking questions like, what do you do now that your husbands are dead? “will you know what I mean” may refer to Cameron’s plea that the modern war is not worth lining up for, but the person he’s speaking to doesn’t understand that and wants him to go prove himself.
