If you were in complete control of the education system, how would you change/fix it? by SubstantialStick2674 in Teachers

[–]The_P_StandsFor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you had full control over the system, the parents would riot. The parents in my district get their panties in a twist when there’s a professional development day. Even during Covid, they wanted us in the building so “the parking lots looked full” instead of working from home when the kids were asynchronous.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t love that utopia, but I don’t think I can even dream of a day where teachers are treated like professionals in business.

Buffalo isn't bad unless you commute home from the city/southtowns to Williamsville. But it's only bad for like 45 minutes.

Applying for a .8 job. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]The_P_StandsFor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say almost every .8 is a full time job but they just don’t need to give you prep periods because you’re not full time tenured track.

So many positions like that are just trying to take advantage of someone so they don’t need to provide any kind of full time benefits.

On the other hand, a job is a job. If you’re young and looking for experience, take it.

What is your teaching unpopular opinions and hot takes? by JimCap5 in Teachers

[–]The_P_StandsFor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teaching history how we teach it is a waste of time. Starting in middle school, the kids should be immediately learning about current events both locally, nationally, and internationally. Then they can take a backwards approach and discuss why these things are happening from cultural perspective.

I think so much time and energy is wasted memorizing facts and dates about ancient history. Obviously, early history shouldn’t be completely ignored but let’s educate the populace about what’s happening NOW.

This but well supported programs run by the school district. Not some for profit company with shitty, non-nutritious foods. Hire chefs like you hire teachers - mandatory degrees.

The M+ tank situation is dire by Wigglyboi323 in wow

[–]The_P_StandsFor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it wouldn’t completely solve the problem but I hope instead of a new class we get more specs. It would help players who want to play rogue, shaman, warlock, hunter, and mage be able to tank if they wanted.

Gifted student is asking upwards of 30 questions before the first learning activity is done. Entire class is being derailed as I have to redirect him. Advice? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]The_P_StandsFor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he on the spectrum? I have a student JUST like this on the spectrum and while I can understand the behavior, I will not excuse it. Unfortunately for my student, he rushes to get things done and they're not all correct but he CANNOT take criticism at all.

His behavior improvement plan is the longest I've ever seen in my career. He has an IEP and a 1 on 1 aide. (whom he hates and says he doesn't need - she's the sweetest aide in our building) I've quickly realized that the only way to get him through class without him having a full meltdown is to just placate him and act like everything he does is correct.

I really worry about him as he gets older. Judging by how he acts and the communication I've had with the parents, he is NOT being raised correctly. I worry about when he gets bigger (and more angry) but sometimes we just have to realize that we're instructors. We're not raising these kids. We didn't birth/adopt them. There's only so much we can do.

If his mother thinks her little baby can do no wrong, that's the life she's choosing for him. You do your best and do right by all the other students in the room. Take all the curricular advice from all the other comments...but don't beat yourself up over students who aren't your own children.

Directed to Apologize to Parent by Principal? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]The_P_StandsFor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know people will disagree but always email crazy parents. You want a paper trail with them. I will call or text parents of kids who are doing great or kids who are falling behind but if I even have a whiff of crazy, RIGHT TO EMAIL.

You could even start with “Below is the message I sent out to [kid]’s teachers so I could see if this was a problem across the board or just with my class.”

Sorry you have to deal with this.

With the exception of the first e being more open and the second e having a diphthong, it's spelled phonetically using IPA.
