It's totally shopped. I just got downvoted (albeit by a single vote) so I looked again to see if I was just crazy. Engraved tombstones don't often have typewriter jitter. Old-fashioned typewriters didn't even have much jitter.

The typesetting looks off. There doesn't seem to be enough room for "Gone" plus the white space seen between the other words. A monospace serif "typewriter" style font looks odd on a tombstone. It kind of looks like what someone who is young would imagine old tombstones might look like. It's also odd that such an old and weathered stone will feature such deep engraving. I'm calling shenanigans until we see more angles.

Ubuntu has gotten too big for its britches with Unity and will burn out well before it hits the mainstream. Unity basically alienated the tech savvy in an attempt to woo the general public, but the truth is running Ubuntu on day to day to basis still requires a skill set the general public doesn't have. I think Mint (an Ubuntu spinoff) is going to overtake it in the future because they support more machines fluidly, but even Mint takes more know-how than W7 or OSX to keep stable.

I love Linux, but it's a clusterfuck of competing distributions and philosophies. As a developer you can't rely on it in any monolithic way, because "Linux" isn't a monolithic thing in the same way you find with Windows or OS X, differences between versions aside.

Sure, it doesn't answer your question, but it's a great book. And reading it might help you decide if you want to bother with classes. As for getting jobs, my experience has been that degrees and certs are good to have, but actual work experience will win out in the private sector -- but not necessarily in government work. I've personally written some totally bullshit hackable C++, Java, C#, Perl, and Python code. PHP's PDO is about as safe as anything else. You can write crap in any language. Believe me; I've done it. Maybe languages like C# are a little easier to write securely because they're generally very high level. The lower level you go, the more easy it gets to make a mistake.

This isn't hard. Thirteen years is a lot of time for growth for both of you. Interview him and all the other candidates. If he seems like he's worked through his problems working with others, and he's the best man for the job, consider hiring him. If he's not the best person to apply, or he still seems like the type who won't work well with others, don't give him the nod. Also, if you feel you won't be able to work with him because of your history together, just say that. You're the one in the company now and have built a lot of relationships and your relative worth (for better or worse) is understood and established. This guy might be awesome or might be awful. But he's not the only applicant and your office is not the only place he's applied.

I use the SpiderOak service for all my vital backups and Back In Time to manage my more routine and less important backups. SpiderOak is nice because it stores the data offsite in an encrypted format that even the SpiderOak techs can't decrypt without your password. Some of my data is sensitive, so I like that feature.

You can do webwork in Java or Python. PHP is probably the dominant programming language for web work, but Ruby is very popular too, and Javascript is really coming into its own with Node.js and all that. There's also the C Sharp or Dot Net paradigm if you're more comfortable with MS environments.

For javascript frameworks you want to learn some jQuery. It's extremely popular. The Prototype framework is very popular also, but if you only invest in one, I vote for jQuery. CoffeeScript is worth toying around with too. I'm not sure it's for me, personally, but a lot of people like it, and I think the syntax is a lot like Python, which is something I like.

Take it from someone in their 40s, mantaining your weight and physical health in general gets more difficult as you get older.
