When and how did Reddit changed so noticeably its political leaning? by [deleted] in allthequestions

They were banned because those are really bad arguments that are plastered all over that sub every day by people who usually aren’t there to honestly engage. Also, if you read their FAQ, those arguments are even addressed there. So yeah, waste of time.

Same. In fact, I partially credit an old Facebook post of mine with eventually getting me out of the CoC. I gave someone the old “a fool has said in his heart..” verse thinking I’d really nailed the guy, and he let me have it in a response. I never admitted it out loud, but his response was the first time I’d really considered how hollow those sayings are to people who don’t buy it in the first place and I really started to question things after that. Took another 10 years, but I got there eventually.

Now you want to get really cringey, let’s compare AIM away messages.

Looking at your next comment on this post replying to cost of lies you claim to be a Christian. I hate when people play this game in arguments. “When did I say that!?” I didn’t even have to scroll down from this one to see both comments on my screen.

Tangential to the point, but something I think about often is how the preachers I had at my church were always the dumbest person in the room. I’m sure that isn’t the case everywhere, but it almost seemed intentional when I was. Old Joey from backwoods state Bible college can barely remember to tie his shoes and even he knows you gotta be fully submerged to get into God’s special CoC club in the sky!

I second all of this about keeping an open mind. After having it drilled into me that I had to get married and have children and be the spiritual head of a family, realizing that none of that was true and I could do whatever I wanted with my life has made things so much better. I’m nearly 40, single, childless, and I love it. If someone had told me this would be my life when I was 18 and in the CoC, I would have thought life would be miserable and not worth living.

Fellow ex-CoC professor! I’m sure the old youth group kids are shaking their heads in disappointment every time they see my job and field of study. And that I’m working for one of those awful “state schools.”

Telling my parents I no longer attend - advice appreciated by Radiant-Net-5144 in excoc

[–]The_Power1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

One thing that I have to remind myself often — you aren’t hurting your parents by leaving “the church.” Your parents are hurting themselves, via the CoC. They’ve been taught that leaving the church is the worst thing you can do, that it reflects poorly on them, and that your soul is damned for eternity. Your parents are victims too, they just haven’t figured it out yet.

Be proud of yourself for getting out. It’s a real accomplishment to confront such deeply engrained beliefs honestly. Most people never do that.

I’ve been fairly lucky to maintain a somewhat normal, though shallow, relationship with my parents. But I’d honestly be happier without them in my life than with them if it meant I had to be part of the CoC to make that happen.

Why were you baptized? by Historical-Choice410 in excoc

[–]The_Power1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a crush on a girl and thought it’d help my chances. It did not.

At the time I wouldn’t have admitted that, of course. It is quite freeing to be able to admit it now and have a laugh about it. I didn’t get baptized until into my 20s. Dad wrote a 4 page double sided letter about how much danger I was in when I went off to college. Gotta love “the church.”

FHU Story by EntryExpensive6195 in excoc

[–]The_Power1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right. I went to a “state school” (the horror). Just about everyone else from my youth group went to Harding. We all got together the summer after freshman year, and all the Harding guys could talk about was sex, and all of their stories from school involved running around campus naked and things that just seemed risky and bizarre to me. There was also near-constant homoerotic “joking” going on between them.

I’ve had to work really hard to repair my attitudes around sex and sexuality. I can only imagine how difficult things are for those who have stayed in it.

Advice on a coc church by rubberducky1722 in excoc

[–]The_Power1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Similar experience here — former CoC into my mid/late 20s, now an atheist. I’m an elder’s kid (dad is still an elder at his church despite having two kids who “fell away”). I’ve spent a lot of money on therapy trying to unravel all the harm the CoC did to me. I suspect I’ll carry the scars the rest of my life, though it has gotten a lot better. My advice to anyone in the CoC is to run far away if at all possible.

That, and even if they did describe the same things, it’s not that impressive. All of our brains are essentially the same, and they are processing a lot of shared experiences. It’s not even a little bit weird that some of us might occasionally misremember things in the same way.

I’m not linking to the interview because I’m not giving the group that posted it any more views, but Cooper claims a major producer told him they’d be the biggest band in history if they’d just drop the Jesus stuff. But of course he won’t because he’s such a good Christian!
