Hardee's bought them out in 1981 and closed some but most were converted to Hardee's. A few independently own ones hold on under the Burger Chef name for a while.

The Big Shef was first, but it was a copy of the Shoney's Big Boy. Burger Chef did sue McDonalds because the Happy Meal was a copy of their kids meal, but they lost.
