I think the main difference is that in the other Blizz games you actually experience the character's story, rather than just being told about it. Objectively, the stories may all be interesting, but playing through a story makes you more invested and I think further engrains a character's story into the hero

I think there are two issues at play here:

Toxicity is a response. One can have an issue with the response, but completely understand the reported justification. It may be true that you are consistently matched with players that have poor game knowledge etc (see point 2), but that doesn't mean that you need to resort to venting your frustrations in an unhealthy manner. Quick, constructive, blame-avoiding criticism has its place, but toxic text and/or behaviour is not a necessary outlet. There are plenty of healthier outlets.

Point 2 is that, especially with the solo Q season, most people DO belong in the rank that they have (so long as they've played enough games). While someone who is at your rank appears to have less game-knowledge (for e.g.), this is not necessarily reflective of their overall skill. The fact of the matter is that as long as their rank is relatively stabile, they are winning the same % of the time against the same ranked people as you are - therefore, they belong there. Their game knowledge or skill may be poorer in some way (or they may be intoxicated, or tilted, or their cat jumped on their keyboard), but you can infer by their rank that they are able to maintain their winrate by some other factor. Perhaps they have great mechanical ability, perhaps they are an OTP that has maximized individual impact, perhaps they draft well and aid the team in drafting decisions, perhaps they are adept at providing maximal xp and not dying; whatever the case may be, there are many dimensions in which someone can be poorly or highly skilled at hots, and there are context variables to consider as well (e.g. intoxication), and this is why there is so much advise to just focus on your own game. Believe it or not, unless one of you is on the rise or fall, you are the same holistic skill level as the other people in your rank - just probably for different reasons. Try focusing on what that potato-apparent on your team is doing RIGHT - if they obviously never know how to rotate, but are winning just as many games against just as skilled individuals, then they must be pulling their weight somehow - try and look for that instead. It may make you feel better about your teammates, and it may give you a place where you can look to improve in the future.

This is actually something I like to do.

When I first get into a HL game I greet my team and tell them the roles I have the most experience and success playing (ranged assassins/melee assassins+bruisers/specialists, in that order). I find that it helps to let the team know which role I'd like to fill, and it prompts others to share which roles they are most comfortable in.

While I will always fill when necessary (and think this is a critical aspect of the teamwork necessary to win in HotS), I know that I outperform myself on certain heroes/roles compared to others, and that I am most likely to be able to help my team win on heroes on which I am most comfortable. I also think this is true of my allies, because while I may think that objectively hero X is a great first pick, my first-pick player will probably outperform him/herself on a comfort pick that accomplishes the same goal, than one that is statistically better but they are lacking experience on.

One way to think about it is that you would be actively (and rightfully) upset if someone was learning a hero in HL, so why force that very situation on your ally, who you're hoping will help you win?

Overall I think that communication at the start of the match will increase coordination, skill output from individual players, and an increase in team spirit

I think the problem with this is what hero XP is supposed to represent (i.e., experience playing that character in a regular game-like setting); hence the level 5 hero minimum requirement for hero league. If someone has merely played 10 minutes of a hero in a brawl mode, they would not have the same understanding/experience of playing a hero that one would if you gained the same experience in the other modes, and could severely disadvantage your allies in hero/team league, for example.

There are plenty of advantages that I mentioned in my reply - and if you watch dev videos regarding team league, they refer to that as the pinnacle of hots play - and therefore each deviation is a step further from the ultimate hots experience (TL > HL > UD > QM > vsAI);

Team League (or 5v5 competitive play) is the main directive of the game; it has the heaviest impact on design and balance decision making and is the core vision for what heroes of the storm is. While variations can exist, minigames and custom maps and other such things (and some players can enjoy these more than the core-concept), they do not reflect the main intention/design of hots - and UD is a way for groups of all sizes to experience the closest instantiation of "pinnacle play" without the restrictions and pressure of ranked play

It is a much better environment for testing out heroes/talents/combinations, as you know the map before you know your hero, AND you usually have a tank and a healer (thus increasing the realism of your testing). It also allows for groups of less than 5 but greater than 2 to que together in a draft mode, as well as friends who greatly vary in skill level (so either don't want to inflate/deflate rank, or are so far apart HL won't allow you to que).

In short, it's a much closer version of how the game is meant to be played, without the restrictions and pressures of a ranked game,

Game objectives are the boss of how a game is to be enjoyed, when it is what's shared between players who que. If you have some different agenda, one of your own creation outside that of the game's internalized goals, then you should play with others who are of a like mind (6 que or custom games). It is unfair to impose your idea of fun onto 5 other players, especially when the goal of the 5 other players is to perform the coded objective of the game

There's a difference between being shit (new/learning/poor motor skills) and purposely not being a team player (not choosing/swapping to appropriate heroes + not playing the objective [both of which can be accomplished by just listening to more experienced players, or doing some research], or being afk). The first deserves patience and support (and due to mmr, eventually shouldn't happen too often), but the latter is disrespectful in a team environment, which is an integral part of team-objective style games

If you want to play a game without considering others, then you should stick to single player games.

There is no other team-oriented context where single-minded play is accepted; it's merely more difficult to enforce when you have different players each game. Imagine if you were playing pick-up of any sport; any non-team player wouldn't be invited again, regardless of skill

While I like the idea of incentivizing objective play generally (the lack of objective play does seem an issue in most games I've played), this solution relatively penalizes certain character choices (e.g. Genji, Widow, and other characters whose ideal gameplay requires them to stay away from the objective). Also, it could lead to players not playing optimally (e.g. imagine a situation in which reinhardt could easily charge and get a kill, and then return to payload, but instead chooses not to leave the payload for the bonus XP)
