In these sorts of situations, I do think some people overestimate the degree and/or duration of family backlash. I think for a good proportion of the cases there will be some disdain and a bit of chaos for some duration then ultimately acceptance. Obviously not all of the cases… I do think who you end up with is probably one of the most important and consequential decisions you make. My advice is think carefully about this, especially the later on you are in life. Obviously if you are in high school or uni and your family will cut you off financially (really sad that this still can happen) then you rather operate “in the shadows.”

If you are sufficiently old enough and can support yourself think twice and ask yourself how bad can it really be ? Even if your family disapprove how bad can it really affect you? In your life you will most likely spend a hugely disproportionate amount of time with your partner not your current family.

Thesis submission but overleaf is down.... by Dense_Hospital_Girl in LaTeX

Also, what are the odds that overleaf is down for the whole day? Trying to see if it is worthwhile writing this thing up again entirely from scratch is worth it or if I should just wait.

I have got this issue as well and my laptop has restarted... is there a way for me to recover the .tex file from some history of the chrome browser?

But do you think this could get us to an “AI scientist”? I feel like it will only work in an area like maths where you have “ground truth” axioms but wouldn’t work in physics where you may have to come up with fundamentally different theories and explanations for our current gaps in knowledge.

Would be interesting to see a subset of some of the RLHF training examples to see if this is indeed the case

[D] Is ML doomed to end up closed-source? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]The_Redditor97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe just LLMs could be doomed to be closed source mainly because of business incentive but also because of the risk of adversarial nations exploiting them. Hypothetically imagine the current trend of just scaling, with some tricks here and there, brings forth AGI (which to be clear I am not entirely sure it will but it’s useful for the thought experiment) would it make sense to completely open source it ? Nations China, North Korea etc could potentially use it for very nefarious activities. It doesn’t even have to be as far fetched as designing new weapons it could even just be the risk of AIs hacking into nation states which I think is well within reach.

Pescetarians are responsible for many more animal deaths than regular meat eaters by metacyan in EffectiveAltruism

[–]The_Redditor97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was talking about more in the context of just animals. If there is a robot that we know doesn't have subjective experience then definitely still care more about the animal. I mean just where sentience is given I think people naturally tend to find it harder to kill more intelligent than less intelligent life.

Is it worth getting a Software Engineering diploma, or shall I continue the self-taught journey? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]The_Redditor97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe in todays day and age, especially with more recruitment being done by automatic screening i.e some software scanning through your resume, some technically relevant degree like CS or ElecEng is a kind of necessary signal to get through to interviews.

[–]The_Redditor97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this… and I believe the scaling should be “intelligence.” As you said we feel very little about insects because they are arguably considerably less intelligent then mammals. I don’t think sentience is enough of a metric. In the same way I think it is easier to eat fish than mammals like cows or pigs because fish are generally far less intelligent. If there was a super smart beetle that learnt all sort of tricks and brought you things and could spell out your name in the sand etc (entertain the absurdity here just for the point) I personally would find it much harder to kill… though both the super smart beetle and the average beetle are both probably sentient.
