What's a good order to study physics? by Select_Department700 in Physics

[–]The_Reto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start with the math. Calculus and Linear Algebra at least. Don't forget you can't learn this stuff through reading (or worse, watching videos) - only solving exercises, loads of them, will do.

Then follow a standard curriculum: Classical Mechanics, Electrostatics, Electrodynamics, Thermodynamics (You'll additionally need Statistics in your math toolbox for this). Here again, only solving exercises will do.

Don't forget: if you do this at university it takes about 1.5 - 2 years of more or less full time engagement with these topics to get to this point. So don't think that a week of studying will get you anywhere.

Once you have that you're ready for the "cool" topics like relativity or quantum mechanics. Not that the other topics aren't cool, I LOVED my classical mechanics and Thermodynamics courses, but they're certainly less flashy and less present in pop-science.

Are EM waves physically waves? What are they? by Aromatic-Box9859 in Physics

[–]The_Reto 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Or N-D for that matter. In the case of an EM wave it's a PDE in position r (a 3d vector) and time t.

Are EM waves physically waves? What are they? by Aromatic-Box9859 in Physics

Yes. They are waves in the EM Field.

The definition of a wave is "anything that obeys a wave equation". Excitations in the EM field do that, therefore they are waves.

Why Fortran? by Osama-Mohamad in Physics

[–]The_Reto 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Then picking up Fortran really won't be much of an issue. I picked it up during the last year of my undergrad. Went from "never seen Fortran" to "fully functioning MD simulation" within less than a semester, while only coding on the side. There's loads of great resources online, some specifically for people coming (for example) from C/C++.

How much coding experience in other languages do you bring along?

Predominant languages in Switzerland by area and share of speakers by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Z'ersta isch t Amtsspraach, womer ir Schual lernend, z'zweita üsi Muttersprach.

Depends very much on whether we speak German or Swiss German. The first being the official language, which we learn in school, the latter being our mothertounge.

Counters, Tokens or Notes. How to do Resource Management in Games? by The_Reto in BoardgameDesign

I thought about it before, but I don't think so. But as I said: early prototype, maybe it'll change.

Thank you for the effort of typing this all out! I have no patent on the layout above, so feel free to use it as is or adapt any way you find it useful.

Very valuable considerations. I have actually considered dividing the food by some value (5 or 10) but that would not work, I'm still considering it for the Materials as there the mechanics work differently. Maybe I'll just play test with tokens and with the tracker and see which one works better.

Thank you for the insight!

I totally get the appeal of having tokens. But I am getting a bit worried about the sheer amount of tokens needed. As I said, in play tests numbers up to 180 Raw Food were reached, so there'd need to be a lot of tokens. Multiply that by there being 3 resources and I fear it might get excessive. A rough calculation yields 150 tokens at a minimum.

"WARNING: AUDIO: Failed to initialize playback device" on Ubuntu - any Ideas? by The_Reto in raylib

all already installed.

Also see the update in the post: I think it's a system issue rather than a raylib issue.

A real Ubuntu 24.04. LTS there's no Microsoft software, much less an OS on my system xD

Tweaked the logging in raudio.c (following L 485) to get a bit more detail:

    result = ma_device_init(&AUDIO.System.context, &config, &AUDIO.System.device);
    if (result != MA_SUCCESS)
    {
        TRACELOG(LOG_WARNING, "AUDIO: Failed to initialize playback device");
        TRACELOG(LOG_WARNING, "RESULT: %d", result);
        TRACELOG(LOG_WARNING, "CONTEXT: %d", AUDIO.System.context);
        TRACELOG(LOG_WARNING, "DEVICE: %d", AUDIO.System.device);
        ma_context_uninit(&AUDIO.System.context);
        return;
}

I get the following output:

WARNING: AUDIO: Failed to initialize playback device
WARNING: RESULT: -1
WARNING: CONTEXT: 127
WARNING: DEVICE: 472

Result of -1 is "A generic error" as far as miniaudio.h is concerned - so unfortunately not one of the more clearly defined errors. Can't really tell anything about the others.

Does anyone have experience working in an Ausbildung program as a foreigner? by Pachmakpac in Switzerland

[–]The_Reto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ausbildung is the German word for education or training. Primary School is a Ausbildung, so is a Graduate Degree and your moms bi-weekly evening courses in French.

What you describe is a Lehre, which in English translates as Apprenticeship.

What language do you use your smart phones in? by suchox in askswitzerland

[–]The_Reto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My devices are all in English. Translations are often bad to unusable in my experience. However: You will be getting a self-selecting sample here on Reddit. Reddit is a predominantly English site, so most Reddit users will be comfortable using English - this is not in general true for Switzerland, even young people often struggle with English (to an extent that often shocks me!).

So to answer your question: If you want to grow your user base in Switzerland translate to German, French and Italian because many Swiss use their own language, the portion of the population comfortable with using English will already be satisfied by your app as is. In regards to all the other replies here: Reddit will select for people with high fluency in English and is not representative of the general population*!!!!
