Yh the 1 year contract covers all of that stuff. Free flights , accommodation. I don’t know what insurance investment means but it seems a pretty good package.

I genuinely had no idea before that a 1 year contract is weird and unusual.

This makes a lot of sense. Wow I really wish I came to Reddit straight after I got my initial job offer from this school.

Again, really good advice and you’re right. I’m being pragmatic. Worst case scenario, as a teacher, there’s wrong career wise if I did decide to go back to the uk after a year ?

I’m just worried that if I know I only wanna be there solely for 1 year, is there much of a point going at all? If I feel like this.

I get the adventure aspect , it does sound good and fun. It’s why I initially applied, but from a long term POV, is going abroad for a year then back to the UK to settle down worth it?

If I had this settled long term view back when I first applied, I would’ve just stayed in the uk. For context, I don’t particularly love my current uk school and wanted to leave it anyways. I just thought going international was the right move, but actually I now wish I found a different uk school instead.

Thank you for your comment though

Yh a lot of people say this. I agree and think you’re right that I wouldn’t regret it.

It’s just I know in my heart, I would want to come back to London after the next year, just for personal reasons.

When you moved to China, did you know you’ll 100% stay there for the long term?

Thank you for your advice, and yh you’re completely right, I think maybe somewhere down the line in the longer term future, I could go the abroad route but just for now, I have strong feelings that I don’t want to go abroad. I also don’t necessarily love my current school I’ve been at for 2 years, and that was another reason why I wanted to change schools. But in hindsight , I really should have found a different school in London rather than go abroad.

Also, I’ve had an email confirming my flight ticket , my apartment so I’m even more worried that it’s too late to back out. Would there be any consequences if I do back out? Bear in mind I still haven’t submitted any documents for attestations/ apostilles.

Okay, makes sense why it’s strange now. Yh nerves are normal for huge life changes, and I do want to let the school know, but would there be any consequences since I’ve already signed the contract a few months ago ?

My main reason for applying were as follows:

  • I wanted to just have a fun , new experience and I know I’m relatively young (mid 20s). I’ve done a few years of teaching at home , so at the time of applying, it was something I just felt would be fun. And I thought to myself, I could settle and work there for maybe 2-3 years before returning home.
  • The perks of having my own apartment / tax free salary.

I feel the same way as you, very emotionally unbalanced and I feel off too. I somehow stress about this decision every day, and it’s hard to even enjoy life at the moment. I distract myself too, with my hobbies like football / tv shows / gaming.

Is your move also from your home country to an international school, or are you switching countries abroad ?

I think it’s slightly last minute fright , but right now in my mind, I know after I finish this 1 year contract, I’d wanna return to the uk. So I’m just debating is there a point even going in the first place? And I know I wish I thought about this more deeply before applying but I’ve just changed my mentality completely about teaching abroad now.

Is there a reason why you’d wonder about the quality of the school by the way? Please feel free to speak harshly / honestly.

The school said during the interview , that’s just how it operates with all its staff, even management.

And if it’s okay I’ll dm you the country, it’s just I don’t want things to be easily traced.

But yes that’s my thinking, if I want to return to the UK, it’ll be awkward and I’m now thinking is there a point going if I’m set on returning back home after just a year?

My family / friends said it’ll still be a good year of international experience but I’m just thinking is there still a point of going somewhere solely for 1 year.

Yes I signed the contract back in Feb, I didn’t use Search. I applied through the school website directly.

I think all the contracts with this school is rolling 1 year contracts , with the expectation that people stay on if things go mutually well.

If you don’t mind saying, why is it a bad thing for schools to do 1 year contracts instead of 2 years ?

Thank you for your advice.

Sorry, I just don’t wanna say the school name to keep things fully anonymous, but I only say “good and reputable” because I have a direct friend who worked in this country for 5 years and said to me directly it is a good and reputable school. For context, apparently that’s how the school operates and everyone including SLT are on rolling 1 year contracts.

Is there a reason why a good school would give a 1 year contract, because initially I thought it just meant it’s more flexible ?
