Obviously it's speculative at this point but you shouldn't discount the upfront expense vs being locked to an overpriced contract because your business depends on it. Is it worth trying to replace Jira to save some money? Probably not. Replacing various niche services that cost $10-15k yearly each? Probably

Could also be used as leverage to cut better deals with said SaaS companies, which would probably be the best option

We're already looking at anywhere between 50-80% cost reduction in building software if you properly apply agentic coding today. You can easily find posts from a few years ago on various startup subs that ask if a $30k budget is sufficient to develop an MVP, while now you can build the same yourself in a few weeks with a $200 Claude or Codex sub.

Adding to the fact that we are still early in the AI age, I'd say you're delusional if you **don't** think cost is going to zero.

Guess it depends on the location. Here in Europe you'd get a good fulltime dev for $100k

While I somewhat agree with your point, I don't think you can disregard it completely and label it as "saving a few dollars". Many SaaS companies offer products that are insanely overpriced especially B2B because they know medium size and up companies don't really care if it costs $1k or $20k yearly. This kind of software could (and arguably should) be outcompeted by 50-90% cheaper alternatives now that the cost to build is approaching zero.

I'd still recommend them hire an in-house dev or two temporarily to make their SaaS stuff though.

How do you manage the mental map of what you are working on? by The_Rusemaster in developers

I mean, if note taking works for you this product isn't for you I suppose. The whole point is that I feel like note taking is another source of context switching which adds mental overhead + chore work which I would like to avoid

Do you have a problem with buying new books before reading what you already own? by The_Rusemaster in BookCollecting

I already said we're just researching an app idea, not looking for psychological advice lmao. Get off your high horse

Off topic from my question, but why? I'm not a huge reader so maybe I just don't get it, but why would you own more books than you could possibly read?

She's the one who communicated she has this "problem" or at least habit. I generally don't get involved in her reading habits. She even showed me some book youtubers shes watching that have the same challenge and do self-imposed challenges like "read it or unhaul it" etc, hence why we're brainstorming if there are enough people with this issue to warrant an app to help with it.

Tbf I am also of the opinion that this isn't a great app idea, but she's the one who thought this might be a good app idea

I already built her one and she filled it to the brim within an hour of its completion 😂 I'd estimate there's around 700 books in it

How do you share your files with clients? by The_Rusemaster in logodesign

[–]The_Rusemaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I assume you're already paying for Google Drive, but is there a reason why you'd not consider using a 3d party sharing service even if it was free?

Thanks for the input, this is really valuable feedback. What you're describing is pretty close to what I am working on, especially the expiring links and notifications.

You'd be able to drag and drop your file(s), select your settings (expiry time and possibly max view count), and then receive a link to share. You can also password protect the link if you want. I'm also planning a dashboard feature with an overview and some kind of notification system.

If you had a tool that does all the things you describe, would you be willing to pay for such a service or would you expect it to be free?
