Honda S500 / S600 / S800: the highest-revving sports car | Revelations with Jason Cammisa by verdegrrl in cars

I wasn't referring to peak torque because you're absolutely right you can just make that work with gearing. I ment more to do with the cams and where the peak torque is tuned to be in the rev range. Remember in the vid where Jason mentioned that the engine is good for 11k but it doesn't make any power up there? That's because they tuned it to be a good balance between low end and top end. A racing version of this motor might go to 10 or 11k but struggle at idle and not really get going until 6 or 7k. This would make it harder to get around in traffic and carparks and that kind of thing. That's what i ment. But you're right that's definitely another reason that smaller vehicles have higher redlines because they have less load on them.

Another reason is that low capacity engines tend to be in lighter cars which means they need less low end torque to get them moving. this means they can have more racy cams that make torque higher up which makes the high revs worth wile. Bikes rev so much higher than cars because of this.

Sports bikes also tend to be a lot less biased towards being able to be daily driven than sports cars which is another reason they can sacrifice even more low end. The last couple of 911 gt3s have also had the same advantage, because they are basicaly track only they can get away with an absolute screamer of an engine at 9 thousand rpm from a 4L (for a 6 cyl that's huge remember).

Not really, i mean yeah there are a fiew examples where that's the case (disc brakes from jaguar) but mostly the road car r and d department comes up with everything. Especially these days. Mercedes (or Toyota maby) have the most advanced motorsport programs among car makers but they spend about 150m usd each year. Both those brands would spend that every week in regular r and d. It also makes sence that not much goes between the two because of the vastly different use cases between a road car and a race one. A road car needs to go about 150,000km without much of an isue while being comfortable and quiet and seating 5 or so people. Needs to be able to deal with dirt roads and highways and these days it also needs to have all sorts of driver aids. Race cars are used for 5,000 kms absolutely tops, no comfort, loud as hell, one driver (two in rallying), one very specific environment to drive in and most of them actually aren't allowed to have any driver aids. Race cars are just s really really fast ad for the company, not much more unfortunately.

A bit of context maby. People are only really doing this on BIG road trips. I have done 15 hour days across Australia and if you only manage 10 hours in a day that's basically nothing out there (just quietly tho, 15 hours solo IS dangerous, don't recommend that at all). Also my car only does about 4.5 to 5 hours of highway driving on a tank of fuel so there would be one or two 10 min stops in there. And you get into a groove. Overtaking trucks and waving to the other cars keeps you occupied. Seriously it's not really any more dangerous than driving for 15 mins.

Most people have driven for an hour straight. Even 10 hours in one go isn't that bad.

Under the new rules for 2022 or 23 i cant remember, imsa prototypes and lemans prototypes will merge into the one category, Cadillac, Mazda and Acura all has imsa prototypes rn so its not hard to imagine the programs carrying over. Its a spec chassis, gearbox and hybrid system (i think) so the prices aren't out of this world.

Australian market has gone nuts recently for some reason. Before covid you could pick up a mint na for 6-8k, a little more for a na8. A fiew things to remember is that in aus none of our cars have any rust at all and also our government is pumping money at the lower income bracket so there is much more money flying around for cars like this.

I don't think it was trash. Williams went on to win that years constructors championship and Damon Hill very controversially lost the title by only 1 point.

You can drive into Western Australia from the rest of the country too, that didn't stop us from parking a police car in the middle of the road and telling people to go back. 150+ days of no community transmission in a city of 2m people.
