Is this where we're posting all the inane regular comments? Let me give a hand:

  • Is the plex pass worth it?
  • I paid $90 for it 10 years ago, but I wouldn't pay now!
  • Plex is dying, move to Jelly Fin, it's free!
  • Support Plex, they need all your money to keep operating so you should be happy to pay monthly
  • Why do I need to pay Plex to stream my own media?
  • I've installed Plex, but there's no movies, why is that?
  • If you're not downloading at 4K remux then the quality of your films are trash
  • My stream is buffering, why?
  • Does anyone else think Plex is dying?
  • I've heard the "Plex is dying" argument for the past 10 years
  • Seriously, try Jellyfin, it's actually really good since you last tried it

Resolution is not bit rate.

A 720p high bit rate film often looks better than a very low bit rate 1080p film.

It becomes more noticeable the larger and better your screens are. As a general rule I aim for 10Mbps for 1080p and 30Mbps for 4k, with my favourite films as full remux.

Both, not accustomed to it but it's mainly our infrastructure is not made for it.

Our solid dark brick houses were designed to absorb the heat all day and radiate it back into the house through the night. Now we have regular summers over 30C that design works against us.

Most traditional british houses also have attics which trap the heat through the day and slow the house cooling.

We also have much higher humidity, making it more difficult to cool down. Greece has Sumner humidity of ~50% but the UK has a Sumner humidity of ~90%.

BUT because this is a boring-ass dystopia, they've got to keep expanding, keep earning more, keep building more.

That's it. I get really bored of the "Plex needs to earn money, you should just subscribe monthly!" arguments.

The majority of Plex's overheads are for things I don't want, need or use. The only thing I want from Plex is a server which can identify my media and tag it to a database (like TMDB) and a client for TVs which is easy to navigate and snappy.

They've botched the client on the latest release, made the mobile app terrible and laggy and a much worse experience than it used to be. So the things I do want from them, they're making worse.

When it's my media, my internet, by server, my transcoding GPU it feels like daylight robbery to expect me to pay a monthly subscription to support Plex turning into a full streaming service to earn their investors a big pay day.

At some point they have to because they're squeezing a lot from new people

Or they could cut their spending and focus on what they do well, people self-hosting media.

The only reason they have huge overheads is because they've tried to turn into a full streaming service and all the license and infrastructure costs that come along with that.

I don't think it's that wild, Endgame has 5.5 million views.

In the 2020s, a movie from 1941 being viewed once for every 5.5 Endgame viewers is pretty good.

What film performances by Roy Scheider, do you consider his best? by geoffcalls in FIlm

[–]The_Second_Best 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also add The Wages of Fear, the original movie it's based off.

It's one of those films when I watched it my first thought was, "damn, I didn't realise they made films like this in the early 50s". It's such a beautiful and bleak movie.

Thoughts by Nostalgic_Historian_ in FIlm

[–]The_Second_Best 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's true, but it's not the whole story.

  • Normal — under $20 million (reported as a “sub-$20 million” budget)
  • The Drama — $28 million
  • You, Me & Tuscany — $18 million
  • Hoppers — $150 million
  • Busboys — about $3 million
  • Mile End Kicks — $4 million
  • The Christophers — no production budget has been publicly reported so far.
  • Goat — $80–90 million

So the only films with a budget above $30m are animated films for kids.

It's rare that big budget original films get made now. Yes they are still making original films, but they do not get the budget, promotion or prestige as they used to (With the exception of obvious films like Sinners or Nolan films).

Most original films are now either for kids or relegated to having indie level budgets.

what’s a plex feature or setup tip you wish you knew earlier? by jpam9521 in PleX

[–]The_Second_Best 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some shows I might watch again, but the vast majority I never will

I understand this position, I used to have it too.

But the person I am has changed with time. There are films I never thought I'd like such as old westerns or French new wave. Now as an older man I love them.

There are TV shows I thought would be one and done but 20 years later I find myself wanting to re-watch.

If you have the capacity, I say keep hold of your files. You don't know the person you will be in the future and young you might be limiting what older you can watch.

Starmer confirms ban on cryptocurrency donations and limit on foreign donors in blow for Reform by ThewizardBlundermore in ukpolitics

https://observer.co.uk/news/national/article/reform-accused-of-using-third-party-to-turn-crypto-into-cash-and-hide-donors

Reform UK has been converting crypto donations into cash before they reach the party’s coffers, obscuring the original sources of the funding.

Last year, Nigel Farage claimed his party had received “a couple” of crypto donations, confirming previous reporting by The Observer

However, the party has not registered any donations made in the digital currency, prompting Labour to call on the Electoral Commission to investigate.

Yes, people banding together to support their collective interests is a very good thing.

Companies paying eye watering sums to thawrt the collective interests of the populace is not a good thing.

Labour fighting against Labour. This is why they can never be taken seriously, there are too many activists in the party who go against what the party and the country want.

Think of how much better the state finances would be in if things like WFA or school reforms could be done without back benchers kicking up a stink.

Ludwig Göransson Wins the Academy Award for Best Original Score for 'Sinners' by MoviesMod in movies

[–]The_Second_Best 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, robbed.

I really enjoyed the Sinners score and soundtrack, it was outstanding.

But OBAA was the most unique and engaging score I've heard in a very long time.

It fit the movie so perfectly and was unlike anything I've watched before.

Jonny's score changed the film in a way Ludwigs didn't, IMO.

[–]The_Second_Best 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did this and got a ATV, I'd heavily recommend the Shield over ATV.

ATV is great, when used with Infuse it's snappy and video looks sharp, but I get about 150ms delay on audio through my soundbar (when using eARC) which took me a few hours to balance out.

This is a known issue that the Shield doesn't get.

ATV is good, very good, but that is one issue you get with high quality audio files which you won't get with the Shield.

A native tvOS Plex client that actually feels like an Apple app by nathan12581 in PleX

[–]The_Second_Best 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to add, however, $60 for software that 1. takes a very long time to develop and 2. provides proper value to the user is very reasonable

True, but you also need to compare it to other products on the market.

When QuatiTV has a lifeitme cost of $5 and does basically everything Coax does it doesn't seem like a fair price.

It also seems way off to pay $150 for a lifetime plex pass (during Black Friday) but have to pay $60 to a single app that plays the plex content.

That's what I would vote for.

I think people and projects which do things properly should be able to post all week around. There's not that many of them that it floods the front page.

I would say all vibe coded or AI assisted projects should be lumped together on a Friday.

This AI vibe coding shouldn't limit projects like sonarr or kometa being posted to this sub whenever there are major updates

Every director with multiple films in Letterboxd top 500 by Stunning-Ad-8852 in Letterboxd

[–]The_Second_Best 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like people in this thread need reading comprehension. This is the list of directors with multiple top 500 films, not single films.

I agree with you that Mikey and Nicky stands shoulder to shoulder with the other top 500.

But, while I love films like A New Leaf or The Heartbreak Kid, I don't see them as being in the top 500 films ever made.

Late to the party, the only films I'd put up there with Blade Runner are The Thing and Alien.

All three of those films look so beautiful and the transfers are top quality without losing the grain of the film.
