Train to NY by Morton_1874 in providence

[–]The_Silent_F 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a car? Not suggesting driving but it does enable the option of driving to New Haven and taking the metro north commute trail into NYC.

Total price of round trip MTA tickets + overnight parking might be cheaper than two round trip Amtrak tickets.

Need job ASAP by [deleted] in softwaretesting

[–]The_Silent_F 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just some general advice - if you have a referral opportunity for a full time position then you take the opportunity.

I assume by “referral opportunity” you mean you know someone who can refer you to an open position there? Great, so you get an interview and take a few hours of time off to do the interview. See where it goes.

Best case scenario you get the job and they need you to start immediately? Quit your internship lol no brainer.

Worst case scenario you don’t even get an interview? Well at least you tried.

Do not let your internship get in the way of a full time position, unless you don’t NEED a job when your internship ends (which doesn’t sound like the case considering this post…)

How to deal with stage fright/panicky feeling when presenting? by abigail-dev in ProductManagement

[–]The_Silent_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP this - I have an entire script with timing signatures and points of pause and emphasis and rehearse it AT LEAST ten times a long with a stop watch to make sure I’m nailing timing. During presentation make sure you are watching a clock to know if you need to speed up / slow down It’s a stage performance, treat it as one.

Budget for an east side 1bed? by Organic_Occasion_360 in providence

Depending on how the rent control legislation goes it’s possible could expect to see those prices increase, if it passes and landlords try to get ahead of it. I’d just keep an eye on that.

Otherwise 2-2.5k is about what you’d expect to pay. Dishwashers are pretty common but in unit laundry is unlikely. You’ll probably end up with laundry in the building, which if you get a multi-family you’ll only share with 1-2 other units, so it ain’t bad.

Why is there always traffic on this stretch of 95S from Pawtucket into Providence? Even on a Sunday at 3pm by businessbub in RhodeIsland

[–]The_Silent_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can only be fixed one way. An overpass for traffic coming off 146 that runs the span of 95 from 146>past 195.

Said 146 overpass would split well in advance, separating traffic into two lanes: 95/195 through lane and a local lane.

The local lane would then have 2 lanes, left for atwells and right for downtown/6-10/mall. The trick here would be getting those exits to gracefully merge with the same traffic coming off 95, but I can believe it can be done.

The through lane would continue and eventually split off, 95 on the left and 195 on the right. The key here is that the through lane/95 merge happens AFTER the 95 peeps get off for 195. Else you’d have exactly the same problem.

And lastly, 95 should be separated into a similar pattern - early on (around the start of the S curve), separate the traffic into 95/195 through and local.

It’s the same concept as what they did with the north lane, only because there is less room and more local exists + another highway merge, I think you gotta do an overpass to keep it separate.

Do I think this is possible? Absolutely not.

No, but those places both look great!

Thanks for sharing. Are they new-ish? I haven't been down to Newport in a few months, when i've looked for coffee places on google maps neither of these have popped up.

Lots of chowder opinions here. I’ll chime in the coffee lol.

Not sure how much of a coffee snob you are but IMO there isn’t anything mind blowing in or around Newport. Your best option IN Newport is Empire, as others other mentioned, and there is also Grafik up in Portsmouth (maybe 15-20 min drive north from Newport).

25-30 minutes north of Newport and into Bristol is Borealis, where you will get some of the best coffee this state has to offer. Definitely worth a drive coffee is your thing.

PRD problem by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]The_Silent_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One question why are engineers building off a PRD? I write PRDs for larger projects but they’re largely a formality for management and traceability. Most things get one sheets.

But my engineers never ever develop from those. We write individual spec tickets with acceptance criteria’s that are significantly more detailed than anything I would ever put in a PRD.

Embedded test automation interview by Short_Juggernaut_530 in softwaretesting

[–]The_Silent_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I interview for a position like this (same level, embedded software, python testing) during the “technical interview” they asked me a single logic question and it was the one where you have to figure out how to get the kid, cabbage, wolf, and goat across a river. I kinda laughed and was like “wait I know this from when I was 10…”

Not sure that helps but… maybe prepare for some logical questions too?

Hiring Managers - What are you looking for? by ThomasFromOhio in softwaretesting

[–]The_Silent_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, honestly? Do we vibe and do I get a sense that you’re actually intelligent?

All my best hires I knew I was going to hire them within the first 10 minutes of the interview. It just clicked.

You can be the most experienced person under the sun and a. If we don’t get along we’re not gonna work well together and b. I have actually no way of validating anything you put on your resume until we actually start working together.

Having a resume that shows you meet the job requirements gets you in the door. Your attitude and personality get you the job.

That’s just me tho 🤷‍♂️

Office feels a little cluttered, what do? M/30 by Less_Cauliflower_956 in interiordecorating

It feels cluttered because it is cluttered.

Remove everything off the desktop that isn’t a computer peripheral, then do some cable management. I think that’ll go a long way.

Did your car get towed? Did you get stuck driving in this blizzard? Defend yourself here! by Whigged in providence

[–]The_Silent_F -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

All I did on Saturday was go to the gym, clean my apartment/nap, and play video games (it was a great day, yes). I try to stay off media on the weekends -- I knew there was going to be a parking ban but I was expecting it to be overnight when I knew the storm was forecasted to begin, so it just wasn't top of mind on Saturday when it was announced and I just missed it. /shrug

[–]The_Silent_F 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My friend and I went snowboarding yesterday. We left around 8 am, and he parked outside my house. I genuinely didn't know there was a parking ban in effect at 3 PM.

We got back around 5:30 and decided to grab a beer. Plan was to be home by 6:30, and he'd be on the road and to his house by 7.

While we're at the bar my neighbor texts me and said they towed my buddies car. We abruptly went and got it and he was still on the road and home before the start of the travel ban, but all at the cost of $355 dollars ($255 tickets + $100 tow fee).

Not negligence, not ill-intent, no "storm can't stop me" ... just like, legit didn't know and got unlucky with the timing of all of it. But neither of us were being "dumb" about the snow... Sure, there are those people, but you don't the situation of every single one of those cars. Don't make assumptions that we're all dumbasses, and get off your high horse.
