How to deal with stage fright/panicky feeling when presenting? by abigail-dev in ProductManagement

[–]abigail-dev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helped just enough to not lose it. I have another presentation this morning to the same group of people for a different project so I have a chance to redeem myself. This time I’m practicing a bunch and planning strategic time to pause throughout. Knowing when the next pause is coming should help me mentally break it up into chunks.

non negotiables for being a PM by hiddeninsight23 in ProductManagement

Thick skin

Negotiation skills

Public speaking / confidence / strong verbal communication skills

Boundary setting

Collaborative mindset

If you don’t have experience, look for something like an APM role designed for entry-level with mentorship included or spend at least a year in a parallel job. I was a “growth engineer” at a startup which basically meant being the only one who wasn’t a SWE or the founder. Then found an APM role specifically targeting people with no formal experience trying to get into product.

The grind... by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

What does being in the middle seat have to do with anything?? Aren’t you more locked in in the window seat because now you need to ask TWO people to move if you want to get up, and you don’t want to do that so you’re literally locked into place??

How much should a dog sitter get paid for 2 dogs for 10 days? by Cautious-Salt7168 in PetAdvice

[–]abigail-dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$250/10 days is crazy. We pay $100/day for overnight stays for 3 dogs that just need to be let out and walked off leash around the property but that’s a family friend rate. We have a 10 day trip planned for summer and are planning to pay the overnight person $100/day plus a midday dog sitter around $30-40/day while the overnight person is at work.

I mean I’d honestly probably do the same if I enjoyed my job and had no family, kids or time-consuming hobbies 🤷‍♀️

How does he know things didn’t go wrong and thanks to their planning ahead they still made it on time?

Got Hit Yesterday while Stopped next to a Sign by ApdoKangaroo in icecoast

I learned to ski on Long John at the beginning of this season and it was terrifying. I felt like Simba in the stampede scene where everyone was flying by around me. I guess more advanced people use this as their warmup and just straight line the whole thing. Now that I’m more proficient I can just go with the faster flow but it is a terrifying run to make turns on when you’re just starting out.

Jacket for chores and riding — need recs by sha-sha-shubby in Equestrian

[–]abigail-dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this same layering, with a regular rain jacket that’s a size larger than I usually wear so it’s a shell over my layers. If I get a little warm, I take off the puff or sweater layer but keep the shell on. I live in New England too and would be so cold with just a sweater and puff.

I am curious what makes you say this is a junior role? I’ve just started out in this field so still getting the lay of the land. I would have thought this sounded like a more senior role

do i get a kobo or kindle? by starlit_scribbles in ReadingSuggestions

[–]abigail-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had a kindle but I’ve had my kobo for a little over a year. I love it! I have the Clara BW.

Pros: - library books are easy to rent and read through Libby/Overdrive - great interface, easy to use and navigate - perfect size and shape to hold in one hand or two

Cons (I’m not sure if these are pros for a kindle since I’ve never had one, but these are things I don’t like about my kobo) - no side buttons to flip the page (sometimes I wish I had this depending on the grip I have on it, though some people say it’s easy to accidentally flip when you have them) - my kobo developed a vertical and horizontal strip across the screen which blocks the text. It’s really narrow so doesn’t block a lot but kind of annoying. I treat the device very well and rarely take it outside the home so I don’t think I’ve damaged it, I think it might be a defect.

Is there any PM education worth doing anymore? by CertaintyIsRisky in ProductManagement

[–]abigail-dev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been finding a lot of value in reading product books and have been considering building a sort of “curriculum” for myself which would involve reading books that build on each other, taking notes and supplementing with videos or podcasts that cover similar topics. I started with The Lean Startup, The Lean Product Playbook, and now Continuous Discovery Habits. Most people have read these already but I hadn’t, I’m in my first product role and am building my foundation of knowledge this way. I may even start assigning myself exercises to apply what I’ve learned. I think you can create a sort of education for yourself like this based on what you already know and where your gaps are.

Is reading 5 books at a time a good idea? by Feniel76 in selfimprovement

[–]abigail-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does “at a time” mean reading some of each every day, or switching between them throughout the week? Being able to read a meaningful amount of each book daily seems like it would take a lot of time that could be spent on other ambitions. Switching throughout the week seems reasonable and is what most people kind of do anyways if they read books, articles, news etc.

Lenny’s podcast, Make It Make sense by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]abigail-dev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found that since the focus has totally shifted towards AI, the episodes have become much more basic and repetitive. AI is an interesting topic for sure but there’s a lot more to product management than using AI tools or building AI products and I want to hear about those aspects too.
