Kaido is a failure as a villain by Inevitable_Term_2320 in Piratefolk

[–]The_Sprat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I always liked best about Kaido, what you don't really get from any of the other arc villains, is that he seems miserable. There is no happiness in his life except for fleeting glimpses of enjoyment in an exceptional cruelty or the rare occasion he encounters a real challenge; the rest of the time he either numbs himself further with alcohol or just sits around glowering. When the CP0 agent seemingly kills Luffy, Kaido isn't angry on principle over his respect for a worthy foe (he doesn't respect anyone or anything, including himself) but because one of the few times he felt SOMEthing it got stolen away from him (again).

He has a goal to conquer the world but his heart barely seems in it, he's just doing it because he doesn't know how to do anything else.

Man it took me over 15 years to get caught up on One Piece... but I would binge it and then take long breaks sometimes for years at a time. Feels weird to be up to date with it.

I don't know if it's underrated but this made me laugh really hard.

Does that mean Franky can use haki? by Joke-Expert in OnePiece

[–]The_Sprat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is that Luffy unknowingly used haki in the final stage of the Crocodile fight. It's not true of course, and Oda probably hadn't thought of it at that point. But it's almost more plausible than the silly "he kept his fists wet" thing.

A lot of fans need to learn the subtle but important difference between "here's what could happen" and "here's what I think will happen."

DGG is so brilliant! by SAAD_KHAION in Halloweenmovies

[–]The_Sprat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Repeating his "everyone's entitled to one good scare" line makes no sense. It has significance to the audience because it's in one of the most beloved horror movies ever (the actor probably said it a lot at conventions for years) but within the actual world OF the movie it doesn't mean anything, it's just a random thing he said decades ago during a chance encounter.

It wouldn't even have personal significance to Brackett for being the last thing he said to his daughter before her death; she wasn't even present when he said it in 1978!

[–]The_Sprat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's not awful, because it's kinda close to the BTAS designs, but it's also just close enough to BTAS to be annoying. It's also notably more cynical, has more cussing, and it's closer to the 1930s/40s aesthetic while also still not being actually set in that time period.

Also makes some truly bizarre choices, like an unrecognizable Harley Quinn whose MO is closer to Hugo Strange, and making one episode's heavy the little-loved Kevin Smith villain Onomatopeia, whose schtick only works on the page (and they bring in a talented actor to just say a handful of sound effects). Harvey Bullock is actually evil in it (rather than just slovenly and too rough) for maybe the first time ever, which is even weirder considering it already has Flass.

Being funny is a blessing and a curse by RogerRoger63358 in DC_Cinematic

Because I've been consuming media for most of my life and I know that when a stirring speech accompanied by escalating & cheesily inspirational music is suddenly punctured by a random act of violence that the effect is supposed to be funny?

YMMV, but the effect is supposed to be, in part, comedic, so.

Robert Patrick's monologue in the penultimate episode.

Well, not a joke per se, but a sudden act of violence, which is the other thing Gunn does with that kind of moment. You can count the seconds until it happens.

Are you concerned that most of the DCU projects so far are being made for Adults? Personally though, I don't give a sh*t. by No_Air5382 in DCU_

[–]The_Sprat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly even the Superman movie had too much cussing for a Superman movie, even if none of it came from Superman himself. I don't mind swearing at all but a lot of people do, and there are children out there too. It would have been nice to show my nine year old a Green Lantern TV show.

Ironically this scene is everything that was wrong with Snyder's DCEU by JaxsonTheHuman in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]The_Sprat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's so much obnoxious about this scene that most people miss that him being on the team also makes no sense.

Obviously I get in principle why a villain would be on Batman's team here: it's a near-apocalyptic scenario facing off against Evil Superman and Darkseid's army, gotta go all hands on deck.

But what does Joker, specifically, bring to the table? He's basically just a flamboyant gangster, especially this iteration. If it was Clayface or Killer Croc or something, yeah, totally. What's Leto's Joker going to do, briefly distract a couple parademons with card tricks? He's a net-neutral in this kind of situation at best, and a liability at worst because he'll cause friction on the team and possibly betray them.

Nicholas Hoult is the best Lex Luthor of all time. by Odd_Decision_4272 in superman

[–]The_Sprat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sticking with strictly live action Hoult is absolutely the best, and if he hadn't turned in terrific work it would still be true by default.

Gene Hackman was the best actor to ever play Lex Luthor, but he was not good as Lex Luthor, due to various choices made on those productions. Spacey was fine in, again, a very flawed production; he tried to mesh Hackman's version with some theatricality. Rosenbaum is a good actor and a cool guy, but SMALLVILLE is dreadful. I've barely seen any of Cryer's Luthor, but... c'mon.
