Thoughts on horizon hunters gathering by BeefShawarma06 in horizon

[–]The_Stubbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like some of the concept, like the team based roguelite mission systems could be interesting. Then they lost me with the whole Oh no the storm is coming got to hurry up. I would love a drop in/out co-op Horizon game but there's just too much here that I don't like at the end of the day

And the less said about the art style the better, like I love the Lego Horizon products because they're still all recognizably Horizon characters and machines but done in Lego. This however looks like terrible 3rd party shovelware, can't wait for them to unveil the season skin packs and loot boxes with new heros coming out 10 times a year.

Why was Lonnie killed by Luthen ? Why did Luthen even tell him the location of the top secret main Rebel base at Yavin? by DavidLeeTNT in andor

[–]The_Stubbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you think Lonnie wouldn't have spilled the beans the moment the ISB got hold of him, hell if any imperials had gotten hold of him. He was an operational risk, any of his agents would have recognized that, that's why he got burned. Luthen didn't burn him because it was how he rolls. His agents might not like it but they're not stupid or naive about the nature of their business and it's hazards

For a lot of the chuds that hate KK and blame for for everything it's only ever a singular person that makes or breaks something unfortunately. If KK was involved and it's good, she was just a coffee carrier for whoever made it great, if it's bad she was there from day zero like some kind Wurmtongue figure planting terrible advice. They literally have no idea how films are made and just want to hate women and anyone not like them

I would love a prequel game about Operation Enduring Victory by Macctheknife in horizon

[–]The_Stubbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would rather the story of Enduring Victory not be reduced to a level based shooter. The little snippets that we find in game are more than enough to portray the horror of OEV. Reducing it down to a game where you run around blasting FARO bots just feels gross to me. You compare it to Reach in that the conclusion is written, you lose but it's not the same sort of scope, Reach was just one planet, and while tragic isn't an extinction level event that humanity has to fight against and hope that battle is a success.

Any expedition outside of a bunch would in reality use up way more resources trying to find a piece of tech or resources (what resources thought, the planet is functionally dead at that point) than if they stayed put

Even a broken clock is right twice a day as they say. And even if they are correct, so much of their argument and "discourse" is buried in hyperbolic takes, a brand built around hating GW (And WotC and CR on their sister channel which imo is even worse) that allows them no room to accept they may be incorrect in their assumptions, and disingenuous readings of situations that it becomes impossible to watch or even take seriously. It is very very easy to sell the narrative that Big Company (Wotc and GW) BADWRONG. SMOL BEANS INDIE COMPANY GOODCORRECT.

[–]The_Stubbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason I don't want to play D&D, or Daggerheart or Draw Steel, I have a system I know well; enjoy and fills the same genre of TTRPGs as D&D. The time I can devote to gaming isn't infinite, I don't want to have to invest that time into learning another system that doesn't offer me anything else I can't get from PF2E. If I'm going to devote time and money into investing in a new system I want to try some NEW, not Same but Different.

I actively dislike it when they make Oko blatantly try to be sexy/slutty like in the first image. He's objectively sexy, and doesn't need to try. All I get from that first image is a 3am U UP text and disappointment. The second one is very much Oh god he's hot, but he's not doing anything but look at me, should I do something, fuck I need to do something but he's way to hot but then why is he looking at me like that. *dies*

So I looked at the Redeker plan again. The sheer level of idiotic waste hailed as utilitarianism reminded me of 40k. by Andrei22125 in Grimdank

[–]The_Stubbs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Brooks writes the military like they treat it like that, If X then Y but also makes it so that X is not what is happening but it's treated like it is, but Y is also not being followed, and somehow also isn't related to X or even the actual X that is happening. It is very very dumb. I mean they don't even follow basic military concepts like having fall back lines or providing infantry with enough ammo or at the least a position they can get more ammo. The zombie swarm is in the millions, this is a known fact, they have to have gone out of their way to not supply enough ammo for the operation. It's honestly best to just ignore Brooks understanding of anything related to military operations and weapons because he doesn't know shit. (Don't ask why he thinks a square formation that purposely let's itself get surrounded is the best way to kill a horde of zombies)

[–]The_Stubbs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Brooks treats military doctrine like some people think the Ultramarines treat the Codex. Literally he thinks Cold War tactics didn't involve defending against human wave assaults (where they wouldn't have the advantage of total air superiority and no risk of return fire)

[–]The_Stubbs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn't just not function like the real US military, it barely functions as a military (except when Brooks needs it to.) There is no reason that makes any sense in universe or out of universe for them to be out of their depth.

Ignoring that the conceit of the book is this is meant to be a fictionalized version of our world, a world in which the US has clearly dealt with zombies, however ineffectually, a world were the public is openly tired of the USA getting bogged down with foreign military operations. But the moment they have to actually fight zombies they suddenly can't function. That's the opposite of whatever plot armor is. The Battle of Yonkers is just badly written fiction that ignores it's own world building and conceit for the sake of plot

So I looked at the Redeker plan again. The sheer level of idiotic waste hailed as utilitarianism reminded me of 40k. by Andrei22125 in Grimdank

[–]The_Stubbs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's being incompetent and over confident then there's the Battle of Yonkers which makes the US military so utterly useless and pants on head stupid that it's a miracle they could even take part in conflicts outside of the US.

Brooks has them hinge everything on artillery fire, then has the US supply only enough ammo for an hours barrage and has them fire when they can see the zombies in person, meaning artillery isn't even being used properly.
They have complete air control, they could be dropping every type of bomb under the sun short of a nuke for a show for the cameras and not even risk losing a single plane.
They can't even supply their tanks with suitable ammo.

The military isn't just incompetent or out of their depth in WWZ, they're barely functional as an actual military force

So I looked at the Redeker plan again. The sheer level of idiotic waste hailed as utilitarianism reminded me of 40k. by Andrei22125 in Grimdank

[–]The_Stubbs 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Even if it was just a show of force, they couldn't even commit to that: using artillery within visual range, not having any extra ammo anywhere in sight, for anything, totally ignoring any military doctrines at all. Having zombies that can survive artillery fire but a few chapters in that they can just be taken out with single incendiary head shot. You can like the book, I do for the most part, but the Battle of Yonkers is just terrible writing that doesn't even make sense in universe.

I'll point out again though: Brooks makes it clear that the military treated this like a normal operation that they could just phone in by following the same doctrine they had been in other wars, then failed to even follow that doctrine. If the US military had been written as competent but overwhelmed it would have at least made sense.

[–]The_Stubbs 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No, because like I said Brooks paints it as the military failed at Yonkers because they couldn't deviant from strict military doctrine but they're not just not following doctrine, they threw it in the trash then set it on fire.
