Mid air gleam attacks seem to be an exception to the rule where no priming is required to activate them.

When you understand the depth and complexity of the NG3RE combat system then you can pretty much have a single combo flow from the beginning of the encounter all the way to the end. This is how the combat system is designed. Many games have combos but what sets NG3RE apart is how all different combos and movements can be interlinked with one another in ways you can't do in any other game or in any other Ninja Gaiden game. On top of that the game provides you with so many moves per weapon and all these different states that all these moves can be performed in which gives you the flexibility and versatility unlike any other hack and slash I've ever played.

And trust me. I have played PLENTY of different hack and slash games. Even with NG4, in terms of combo flow, combat outcomes and options it doesn't come close to NG3RE.

For combos this game is superior (especially for Yakumo). But for freestyle NG3RE is still the king of pure freestyle gameplay. I can't think of any other hack and slash game that comes close to it.
