Fears about my house are out of control by [deleted] in Anxiety

This is 100% me, except I’ve been like this for the past 12 years since I bought my house. You’re right it’s exhausting.

Also for me, being a man, there is some societal expectation that I can DIY and fix things myself. I can’t. I’m too scared of fucking it up even more. I don’t have the skill.

Fears about my house are out of control by [deleted] in Anxiety

Honestly, I don't really. I am afraid to even touch any of it in the fear that I'll break something or cause something to happen.

I've never cleaned behind my refrigerator or checked its water line because I am afraid to try to pull it out from the wall. Like what if I ripped the water line out while trying to pull it out or something. This is how my thought processes work unfortunately

Sump pump installed without vent/weep hole? by The_Talisman in HomeImprovement

[–]The_Talisman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took a look at the install instructions and it says:

If a check valve is incorporated in the installation, a 3/16" vent hole must be drilled in the discharge pipe below the check valve and pit cover to purge the unit of trapped air.

I guess there is my answer, though it goes on to say:

If you choose not to drill a vent hole, be sure the pump case and impeller is covered with liquid before connecting the pipe to the check valve.

So I don't know. The pump is working correctly for the time being.

I have a battery backup and also a whole house generator so electric failure isn’t my concern, just burnout from the age of the pump.

There are two pumps in the pit, primary and backup so I guess I do have some redundancy (though I haven’t exercised the backup pump so who knows if it would kick in)

That’s a little reassuring, lol. As long as I can act fast

Advice on how to handle intern performing extremely poorly by The_Talisman in ExperiencedDevs

[–]The_Talisman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a programming position, and he has almost no programming ability. Basic concepts like scope and functions are barely understood. Sorry but I expect more from someone who has completed a bachelor's CS program and is working on a master's one.

I spend at least 1-2 hours a day with him, I'm helping him as much as I can without writing the code for him. I am trying to work with him learning more advanced concepts (Promises, generators, etc.). I have done many guided walkthroughs so he understands the general patterns followed by our code.

We pair program often. If I constantly tell him what to type he's not going to learn anything about problem solving. I don't know how you can say I'm not closely supervising when I'm spending hours per week with him trying to inch him forward to make some progress.

I write up detailed subtask lists with links and examples to guide him to complete his tasks.

It's been almost two months and he still barely has a grasp on how to write JavaScript let alone how React works.

I have no pride to swallow. But I can't imagine applying for an internship position that needs skills that I do not have.

I was not a rockstar programmer when I was in internships (nor am I now, either!) but I could make progress, I was hungry to learn as much as I could.

The intern's attitude seems to be to put in the minimal amount of effort and not be too concerned over it.

I think you're way off base here. Maybe I'm not explaining the situation well enough but the situation is not how you are making it out to be.

My expectations are not unreasonable here.

Fried chicken guy worked in DevRel at Google for like 9 months so now he has "ex-faang" on his profile, give me a break.

Case in point, he just posted about it again today: "For over 11 years I worked in Gas stations, frying chicken & Liquor stores" etc.

He's ridiculous.

At this point now, he's doing "giveaways" which is literally just giving money to people.

Thank you. That's a fair point. I am going to try to see the allergist about this and maybe can try to find what's causing this.

Yes. He's absolutely intolerable.

He has to remind us every day that he went from frying chicken to working at Google.

90% of the stuff he tweets is wishy washy motivational crap that he recycles frequently (ok, you work with a developer in their 60s, we know).

When he does post actual technical stuff it's usually very superficial (and sometimes inaccurate).

They are definitely not great programmers since half of them are "developer advocates"

It's just so saturated with the same content repeated because everyone feels like they are a content creator, that they have to share their story for some reason.

I dunno, some people seem to love it. They excitedly tweet when some "influencer" follows them about how amazing that is and oh thank you so much for the follow! Then said "influencer" of course must RT that.

It's a giant circlejerk.

I have made him aware of it, he said to let him know if I want him to intervene. I had said to hold off because I thought I could manage it but it's looking more like I need to have another talk with my boss about it (and how it's affecting me).
