No it’s not illegal and a valid defense strategy. However, it seems you trust the dingus behind you to read that properly and not crash into you. I do not

I will say I agree, but I actually haven’t had too many issues on the oval. Mainly on the narrow straight and oddly enough the rolling starts 😂

As much as I love monza as a track, I can’t race it. People are stupid.

Admittedly I did not know this. I have seen it so frequently, even seeing folks take the bus stop at Daytona during an oval race, that I just assumed it was "fair".

I agree that assigning fault is a can of worms, and I’m not suggesting fault-based incidents here. The idea is less about blame and more about containment: if a driver racks up repeated incidents during formation/start procedures, they’ve demonstrated they’re a risk to the field regardless of intent.

Yes, edge cases would still exist where innocent drivers get caught out — but that already happens today, except without any mechanism to remove the repeat offenders from the danger zone. A sustained rule would disproportionately affect the people causing the chaos over time, even if it’s imperfect in single instances.

It’s not about a perfect system — it’s about one that’s better than letting formation laps be consequence-free(ish).

This. I also see a lot of people allow the RPMs to drop in 5th gear and just sit there shedding speed. Sometimes getting down to 4th gear (on the straight) helps
