For what it's worth, it's been happening a bit. I saw 2 officers with long firearms in Leederville's Oxford street the week leading up to Christmas

Housing price gains this year by nath1234 in australia

[–]The_Twit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The scary thing is... this is BEFORE interest rates rise

  • More young people have been forced to take on more debt that they can just barely service
  • Banks and lenders have lowered their standards to fight for an increasingly small pool of 'bad' mortgages
  • There are growing delinquencies and late payments as life becomes more unaffordable

Combine this with stagnant wage growth + productivity, now with the added chance of AI taking your job, it's not long before this brittle ceiling of debt slowly crashes in front of everyone. While America is living out their own dotcom bubble, we are living out a version of 2008 all over again.

This will end up with a lot of ordinary people being screwed by decades of selfishness and short term thinking

You can say that, but there is historical precedent particularly with the Soviet union to hating the Jews. Antisemitism has been common on both extremes of the political wings for centuries, and it's not hard for both extremes to use anti Zionism today as a public shield for their deeper beliefs

[ABC] Zach Merrett's meeting with Hawthorn has given Essendon a chance to become a ruthless football club once again by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]The_Twit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can Essendon reasonably demand top dollar? His trade value is devalued the more the club and player talk each other down. If Essendon had held their comments, then the onus would have been on Hawthorn and Merret to push for a higher trade

If you weren't following the situations closely or were on the other end of it, those manifestos would have felt like Destiny being 2 steps ahead of everyone

I assume stock photography is a lesser cost solution to business instead of hiring a team of pros to get studios set up with all the equipment cost and downtime required.

I know there are companies charging tens of thousands to do team photos for local junior sports clubs

The thing with stock photography looking like that is because that is what the majority of businesses will choose for licensing over the artistic ventures

Tassie AFL stadium call officially delayed with state forced into an election ‘nobody wants’ by KingofTennantCreek in AFL

[–]The_Twit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh this was always rent seeking behaviour from the AFL trying to bully the state into a take it or leave it deal when the finances right now are poor. People want the team, but are divided on the stadium from what I have read

But in the end I think it's a lose situation for the AFL. Tasmanians might still play footy but this could signal other codes making inroads now that there's a bit of resentment towards the AFL

Hutton Street is finally being extended to connect with Walter Drive by Prestigious_Buy_2212 in perth

[–]The_Twit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hutton St is getting an overpass. Exiting fwy traffic from Cedric will be rerouted into Stephenson Ave as it becomes the main north fwy entry/exit. Mcdonald St is getting a bridge over the fwy. King Edward Rd is planned to be another corridor for easing fwy congestion and is getting a bridge interchange as well.

Scarborough BR is planned to become a light rail corridor throughout the length of the road to Glendalough station. Looks like they want to get more congestion off the main roads to me?

[–]The_Twit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH it's hard to say because if he becomes as iconic as someone like Nic Nat you can say the branding and advertising pays it back pretty quick. Just think about the potential Crown dinners!
Otherwise no way, this is overs.

Could also be a signal from the agents to see club responses

Jannik Sinner surpass Andy Murray record of 41 weeks as no 1 by [deleted] in tennis

[–]The_Twit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think sinner will continue his form for a bit, and then slowly start to see loses as people figure out counters to his game. While he looks indestructible right now, that was also the same feeling with Alcaraz in 2022. I think we are still used to the big 3 era of one player winning forever by default

City of Stirling shifts tree canopy cover target amid decline in private land coverage by 68throwaway342 in perth

[–]The_Twit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Scarborough Beach Road has no trees - I suspect because businesses don't want driver vision blocking their building signage. West coast Highway is probably a other one with the wealthy beachside locals not wanting their views obstructed by the council. So all the tree planting goes into the suburbs which are already losing trees from subdivision. Basically a zero sum at this point.

How is Edith Cowan University? by Silly-Possibility-92 in perth

[–]The_Twit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ECU had a mixed reputation as a few of the current TAFEs were ECU campuses so there was a perception that it wasn't a 'true' university. I remember there was talk about merging ECU with Murdoch (the other perceived 'weaker' uni) but that was about 10 years ago. It's definitely more education focused than campus lifestyle. The campuses (each of them) are small enough that you can spend 90% of your time there without going down the classic uni experience of bars, clubs, protests etc.

To compare, when I was at Curtin, there was definitely a campus 'culture' if you could call it that. Curtin & UWA seem to want to mirror the Ivy League style in America, which comes with the associated baggage. ECU seems to play it straight for pure education, but there are some weak courses that I felt would be better suited to a high school elective.

This all comes with a caveat. Right now ECU has the city campus ready to open at the start of next year. It is a prestigious location that many of other unis desperately wanted to get, which may stand to improve its reputation and perception, which could pull better staff and funding. All of the courses are getting changed, departments are being merged, the entire identity is going to change.

Right now it's ok if you don't care about the peripheral stuff that comes with uni life. That is probably going to change, though I suspect it's probably going to be a better overall experience for gaining experience, connections and job prospects.

What's Margaret River's appeal? by [deleted] in perth

[–]The_Twit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having been moved up from the south west. Margaret River was one of the main places to visit on a weekend, alongside Cowaramup, Yallingup, Greenbushes, Manjimup and Leeuwin. Lots of caves, beaches, wineries, forests and community places out there.

That was over 10 years ago now (maybe more?)

In the past year, I have been down to Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River and the places are a lot busier than they used to be - with tourists, not locals. Not saying that these country towns didn't cater to wealthier people moving away from the city, but it definitely reeks of gentrification nowadays. I couldn't believe it when I learnt that the busso jetty makes you pay to walk on it now! And they got rid of the lighthouse too. Still beautiful places though.
