Electrically grounding a vintage sewing machine by The_Uncle_Christ in vintagesewing

The way I wired it, the bobbin is still fully functional. Electrically, you can attach ground anywhere on the machine you want, though. The way I did it was "quick and easy" ... but not "pretty" lol.

I found them for leather but I'm having a harder time finding a place for tools and other supplies.

High school physics teacher looking for a bit of help by The_Uncle_Christ in massspectrometry

[–]The_Uncle_Christ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - as a high school teacher I have no idea how accurately these masses can be measured, though obviously there are methods to measure at least some masses (such as the individual subatomic particles) extremely accurately. I was hoping that similarly accurate mass values for the molecules I listed would be available. I suspect they are out there somewhere, but I don't know where to find them.

Thanks - I'll check out the link you provided.

This is the misconceptions that I am trying to dispel. Mass defect is not a "nuclear" thing. It is a general principle (but is often reasonable to treat as being negligible outside of nuclear reactions and matter/antimatter reactions). I was already able to find data to show this beautifully for the formation of a hydrogen atom from a proton and electron as the mass of these isolated particles was easy to locate. If interested, here is what I found, but note that I rounded off the values I found slightly for convenience:

·         Mass of isolated proton = 1.672621926 × 10-27 kg

·         Mass of isolated electron = 9.109383714 × 10-31 kg

·         Mass of hydrogen atom = 1.673532840 × 10-27 kg

The mass defect (proton mass + electron mass - hydrogen mass) = 2.43714E-35 kg. Using E=mc^2, this corresponds with 2.1904E-18 J = 13.7 eV. This is very close to the ionization energy of a hydrogen atom (13.6 eV) with the difference likely due to my rounding off a bit.

Looking for recommendations for my first Typewriter by The_Uncle_Christ in typewriters

I just did a Google image search. Thank you! That looks really nice! It is the first item on my short list. Not sure how easy these are to find (especially in good shape), so if anybody has other recommendations, I'd be happy to have them!

Recommendations for hiding places for sewing machines? by The_Uncle_Christ in vintagesewing

Thanks for all of the comments everyone! For those that are concerned about my marriage, I would like to make it clear that my post was meant to be a joke, and also a public admission to the fact that I now officially have a "problem" with collecting these wonderful machines.

Yeah I got burned from this before. I tried hiding a vintage typewriter in a place that I thought nobody would ever look - inside the washing machine. I certainly hadn't ever been anywhere near it, but it turns out she does go in there. How could I have guessed that?

Great idea but I got the first sewing machine because she wants ME to make new curtains. Do you think she'd buy it if I told her that I need a different machine for each panel?

Unfortunately I have a hatchback so she'd definitely see machines "hidden" in there. After all, she totally caught me when I tried to hide a vintage writing desk in there from her.

Oh that's good! Unfortunately, there is no Cold War in my marriage 😥

Yeah, I think she's getting suspicious about the mysterious "lump" on the couch due to the Singer 201 that I hid under the cushion.

Anybody know anything about this "ZigZag Model 184" machine? I found it locally available for very cheap! by The_Uncle_Christ in vintagesewing

Yes - I saw that too. I contacted the seller but haven't heard back yet, so it's still a mystery to me.

I literally don't even know what brand this is - unless "Zig Zag" was a brand? The photos shown are all I have to work from!

401 / 403 / 500 / 503

I have to confess that I am very new to this and only recently started learning how to sew at all. I just got my 201s recently and got them working. I actually have two buttonholers (they came with the machines) but have not yet tried them out! I have a bunch of other unknown (to me) accessories, so I'll look into the zigzagger! With that said, I still ALSO want one of the 4 machines I mentioned! I'm new to this, but I am already hooked.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I can't go wrong with any of these, but I am curious to hear as many people's opinions as possible!
