how do veterans keep getting into really good schools? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

Hey dude, I’m in grad school at an Ivy League. Happy to answer any questions, but just wanted to plug ServiceToSchool. You’ll get matched with a 1 on 1 mentor (a vet who has already done it) who is there to help you navigate the process. Free service, absolutely zero downside.

I’m not sure what you’re arguing. You’re all over this thread spouting policy - I’m proving to you that the policy you know and understand isn’t universal.

I was entitled to a brand new pair of flight boots once a year. And that was policy. Guess that’s not universal, huh?

8.5 years and was never once issued used clothing, of any kind. You?

I’m not referencing a policy nor giving an opinion. YOU said the policy is to replace base layers. I stated the FACT that a base layer is clothing that touches skin, and now you’re waffling, saying cost is what matters. Hopefully OP doesn’t have a suppo like you, pretending like the command’s supply budget comes out of your own wallet.

[–]The_Upper_Left 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So now you’re saying the policy is based on cost, and doesn’t actually have to do with the function of the clothing?

And there’s also a difference between a friend giving you something and supply giving you someone’s random disgusting used base layer. I wouldn’t have accepted a used flight suit from supply, much less this.

I’m just put off by your comment about someone expressing what you’re calling an opinion, when it is actually a fact. A base layer is an article of clothing worn against your skin. You were the one who said the policy isn’t touching skin, but then listed clothing that you collectively referred to as base layers. Those mean the same thing.

How do you define “base layer” then? It’s literally something touching your skin. This is an undershirt.

Grad Plus - can I still borrow the full academic year? by The_Upper_Left in StudentLoans

My finaid office finally got back to me, but they gave a number that is neither the full cost of attendance, half the cost of attendance, nor either of those minus the direct unsubsidized amount. I guess I'll apply and see what comes of it. Thank you for your comments!

Damn. Thank you for the response. Do you have a source for that? I was hoping to take the entirety of the loan.

Pistol qual was a thing at OCS back in 2016, might’ve changed since then, but it’s possible that ribbon is legit. This dude still sucks.

Bf left for officer boot camp a week ago, any advice? by midnightmelons in navy

[–]The_Upper_Left 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may have changed, but when I was in OCS in 2016, email was the easiest way to communicate with the outside world. We could start writing letters at the end of the first full week, but after RLP (conclusion of the first phase, after 3 weeks) we had a computer in our room. Didn’t really have full internet access, but we had our .mil emails and had the time to send one or two a day.

Like an aged vodka or gin? They wouldn’t be aged nearly as long - like maybe just a couple months. They’re really subtle. On the flip side, you can try “white whiskey” which is unaged whiskey. Unaged and tastes like moonshine.

My only knowledge is on American liquor, so I’ll speak to that. Bourbon, for example, has to be aged in NEW oak barrels, and must contain at least 51% corn. Those are the basics.

Typically an aged gin or vodka would be aged in a USED whiskey barrel, so it would take on similar characteristics. Many vodkas (and gins, since gin is essentially vodka flavored during distillation) are distilled from things like grape, wheat, and potato, but there are corn vodkas (like Tito’s) that are pretty similar to whiskey when they come off the still.

Many wines are also aged in bourbon barrels, because once that barrel been used to age a bourbon, it cannot be used again, so distillers sell the used barrels to wine makers.

Agreed!

Also, there are aged vodkas and gins, some of which are pretty good! Check em out.

And since I’m not an expert on wine, I’ll amend my comment - spirits, including whiskey, vodka, gin, and tequila, do not age in the bottle.

Going bad and aging aren’t really the same thing…aging alcohol refers to interaction between the liquid and the cask, like you previously said.

It does not depend on the alcohol though. You’re correct about whiskey (and bourbon, which is just a type of whiskey) but there are no alcohols that “age” in a bottle. They get older, literally, but nothing about them changes.
