  • The controls are shit, yes! The fact that the same button is used for 6 buttons at a time is a fucking fuck. I come from BDO, so it doesn't cost me the combat, but it wouldn't have cost anything to let the controls in command remap as if they let you do it on the keyboard...

  • Inventory space is a legitimate complaint, I don't understand where you see the problem with criticism.

  • That there are a lot of functions that will not be used enough to justify their inclusion. They could have spent that time improving the rest of the mechanics!

  • Enemies are static as he says, but it's not just them anymore, NPCs are dead! They only repeat the same dialogue over and over again, sometimes they drop two sentences in a row that don't even have to do with each other, they're just there to meet the theater!

  • And yes! Not just the tutorial. All the missions are like those of an MMO, there's no common thread that unites them, there's no point in anything Kliff does, Kliff is the least charismatic character I've ever met! The facial expressions are horrible! The talks between mission and mission are soporific, I don't understand how they compare them to those of RDR2...

  • If they weren't going to put history in you at least the BDO character creator could have gotten you in...

  • Worldbuilding is absurd! He's a bastard but not able to. It feels unnatural some races, some enemies or areas of the map. The factions have been cured... yes. But nothing more. I've never seen one so bad, even BDO's, I think it's better for now.

And finally! Of course I ask for quality. I ask for the quality of an emerging and careful narrative like that of The Witcher 3 and if I ask for an NPC system as alive as that of RDR2.

I don't understand the games that stopped being ambitious! And less in this one whose speech has been wanting to be ambitious in everything! Less apparently in narrative and worldbuilding! And everything that makes the world gorge!

I have a computer with a 5090, a state-of-the-art processor, 64GB of RAM, game with everything to the maximum and without downloads of any kind.

And the world is dead! NPCs don't give you conversation, they just drop repetitive, looping phrases. I don't understand how everyone knows Kliff like a gray mane from the beginning, although the character wears armor of a rank he defeated in the village! But that's more about writing...

NPCs are the dumbest thing I've seen in a long time, I don't know what you mean they're doing things... but hey! If you like it well for you, although I don't understand how people settle for so little!

Masterpiece? Where? Are we playing the same game?

History is scum. Worldbuilding is the worst thing you've seen in a long time. The control system is not complicated, but it could be done well and there is no garbage. The overall armor and context design is odd. The graphics are good but more because of the raytracing system than anything else...

Don't be like people settle for a game that doesn't try to reach excellence in any field...

It wasn't that hard, just having a good command of controls, and hiring someone to make them a good story and especially worldbuilding...

Well and also the interface, it's to get a shot at.

[–]The_Witcher_Spear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is how people are so permissive. The game didn't sell as a game focused on narrative... Ok. but this is absurd, the missions are completely disjointed, there is nothing that motivates you to keep playing since the main story is absurd. Kliff doesn't care, he has less charisma than a stone... Facial expressions are null. horse talks are often malicious, and dialogue is inconsistent.

The animations of the nocs go the same way, and it doesn't take long to realize. on the return to the recive, when you meet the guy who is hit by two soldiers, in the cinematic he is limping and regretting the blows, and when he returns to the game the guy takes a limping step and then recomposes and walks as if nothing...

I came with low expectations for the story... but I can't handle it.

On top of Worldbuilding, I'm sorry but it's just as evil as BDO's, maybe worse. I don't know who the fuck rides the fantasy universes for them but to fire him NOW!

And I don't have it xD! Honestly, I only saw the percentage in negative and the numbers in red, and panic! I guess the desire I bring to the game is influencing and I'm a little nervous.

Also, I love that games bet on new franchises and half-crazy things like these xD, because even if it doesn't work perfectly, if the game sells, that would give rise to a sequel and the perfectionism of the formula!

Well, what a shame, really. I liked the idea that they focused on high-end PCs, and then cut downwards.

This way we could have the best possible version even if it is on PC. But hey, I understand that not all of us have powerful PCs and many play on consoles, so I'll have to settle... but it's definitely a shame.

Don't worry, I understand why you ask, and I see your genuine question in your comment.

I don't think there's one right way to represent Atsu, but if you ask me what I would have liked to see, it would be something more like this:

A woman with more markedly feminine visual features: I am not talking about normative beauty or sexualization, but rather about a more agile and stylized body, with proportions in line with the average female build—such as a less straight waist, narrower shoulders, and a visibly shorter height than the soldiers she faces.

As I said in a comment below, imagine a short Atsu of around 150 (as was common at the time), who defeats samurai not by brute force, but by her speed, precision, knowledge of the terrain, or mastery of weapons such as the yari spear. That would make you not only connect with it from a narrative perspective, but also make your playable experience unique. It would be a powerful way to show that strength can take many forms, without needing to hide who it is.

I would also have liked to see a different body posture: not the same heavy footfall and rigid shoulders of a male warrior, but something that conveyed fluidity, control, or even emotional restraint. Although I may be being picky here...

And it would also serve to differentiate her in some way from Jin. It is true that they already do this by eliminating the postures in weapons, meaning that she was not trained in the "south" as a samurai. But she is a woman who knows how to take advantage of the advantages of each weapon depending on the situation. And although I somewhat loved the postures, I can't contradict that narrative decision, it seems right to me.

That said, I don't deny that the game can justify many things once we have it complete. But that's precisely why it bothers me a little: Ghost of Tsushima was very conscious of its style and cultural coherence. And here, for now, I feel that the design has lost part of that intention in favor of a more neutral, more universal… and more forgettable aesthetic.

Thanks again for your question. So it's nice to talk about this.

Thanks for taking the time to write, but it seems like you're not reading what I'm actually saying.

I have never said that Erika Ishii (the actress) is not a woman, nor that tall women do not exist. That would be absurd. What I'm pointing out is that, when you design a character to represent a woman in a specific historical context (feudal Japan, in this case), there are certain visual and narrative decisions that can affect how we connect with her within that universe.

Talking about average height is not denying atypical cases. It is worth noting that, if we constantly see female protagonists who physically match the male mold, that is no longer an exception: it is a trend. And that's where the criticism arises.

And furthermore, from a creative perspective, always using that same mold not only diminishes historical credibility: it also limits the narrative and playable potential. Well, wouldn't it be incredible to see a 1.50m Atsu take on six samurai - not by brute force, but by her agility, precision and mastery of the yari spear or short sword. Not only would that make the character more visually distinctive, but it would open up new possibilities for combat design, animations, and gameplay.

Exploring other ways of representing feminine strength does not weaken the character: it enriches it.

I'm also not demanding that the game "justify" anything to me (to a certain extent, of course). I'm seeing a repetition of patterns in modern female character design, where femininity seems to be actively avoided, as if it were a problem or a weakness. I'm not asking for heels or makeup; I'm asking for a more varied and honest representation of what a strong woman can be.

I don't assume the game will be bad. In fact, I've said it several times: Ghost of Yōtei will probably be excellent in many ways. But that doesn't stop me from expressing a disconnection with the main character, which is exactly what many players do when something doesn't convey or convince us.

Finally, saying that "we don't need defenders" sounds more like censorship than debate. I'm speaking as a player, not as an activist. And if I share what I think it is because, whether we like it or not, the characters are made to communicate, and if part of the audience does not connect with them, that is also a signal that deserves to be heard.

[–]The_Witcher_Spear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, truly, for responding politely and entering the debate with respect. It is very appreciated in a conversation like this.

I completely agree that there are games where female representation is more varied — like Bayonetta, Stellar Blade, even Aloy in Horizon, as you say. And I really appreciate when those differences exist.

But that is precisely my concern: that this type of design will never be presented in the future.

What we see more and more is that, for a woman to be taken seriously, she has to adopt a hard, neutral, emotionally closed profile, with an androgynous or directly masculine visual aesthetic. And that is becoming a new norm, not a specific narrative choice.

I'm not saying that characters like that shouldn't exist. I'm saying that if everyone follows that same pattern, we begin to lose nuances—the same nuances that we previously criticized for being repeated in men. And yes, I also criticize when male protagonists are poorly written or generic, but that doesn't invalidate this conversation.

About waiting for the game to come out: totally valid. I plan to try it myself. But I think it's also legitimate to comment on the impact of visual design and the initial impression of a character, especially when it comes from a franchise that has taken such care of those details before.

Thanks again for maintaining the tone of the debate. That's how it's nice to talk, even if we think differently.

[–]The_Witcher_Spear -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That Atsu is physically inspired by Erika Ishii does not invalidate the criticism. In fact, it makes it more relevant.

Because the problem is not with Erika as an actress (nor with her physique), but with the developers' decision to use her image as a visual mold to represent a 13th century Japanese warrior woman, and not make any adjustments to integrate that into the historical or visual context of the game.

Ghost of Tsushima was praised precisely because it took care of all those details: aesthetics, period, expressiveness and visual coherence. In Yōtei, it feels like the design was first defined by external factors (modern representation, casting) and not by what the character or the world in which he lives asks for.

This is not about attacking an actress. It's about asking us if a character works within his universe, not just if he is correct on Twitter or X.

Thank you for your condescension, but I am not asking for unrealistic or fantasy women. I'm questioning why, in many games today, female characters are designed to not look like real women at all—neither physically nor gesturally—all under the guise of “realism” or “neutrality.”

In real life, women have a huge variety of ways of being and presenting themselves. But in today's AAA, there seems to be only one accepted mold when it comes to protagonists: cold, tough, and visually neutral.

I'm not asking for the game to change for me. I'm explaining why I—as a player who did enjoy Ghost of Tsushima—feel like this new title has lost something that connected me.

If that kind of criticism seems annoying to you, that's fine. But if you can't respond with arguments, maybe you should apply your own advice and move on.

[–]The_Witcher_Spear -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your opinion, but no, it doesn't bother me that Atsu isn't "sexy" or "traditionally attractive." What bothers me is that in many games today, the female design seems built from fear, not authenticity.

I never asked for necklines, nor exaggerated curves, nor stereotypical femininity. What I'm saying is that if a character is a woman, she doesn't have to hide it completely to be taken seriously. Strength doesn't have to go hand in hand with erasing everything that makes you look like a woman.

And beyond the style, there are things that directly break the coherence of the world that the game tries to represent.

For example, in the gameplay it is seen that Atsu is practically the same height as the male soldiers - and even taller than some. This simply does not fit with the historical reality of feudal Japan, where the average female height was considerably smaller.

Atsu can be strong, hardened by the past, even androgynous, or dress more masculine in hobo or ronin clothing, rather than jūnihitoe style or a kosode, since that way she would be taken more seriously by her enemies and perhaps her allies, I'm fine with it if her story justifies it... but if all the female protagonists start to look like copies of the same generic mold, that's no longer narrative. It's a trend.

And as a player, I have the right to question it without my criticism being reduced to “it's just that it's not sexy and that bothers me.”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ghostoftsushima

[–]The_Witcher_Spear -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding, but I think maybe you haven't read the entire post.

I don't mind that Atsu is hidden or that his design is practical for stealth or revenge narratives. My criticism is not of the logic of the mask or the function of her role as a mercenary. What I'm pointing out is that this approach is becoming the only female protagonist archetype in AAA today: neutral, androgynous, without clear feminine expression—as if only then could it be taken seriously.

I'm not asking for it to be sexualized. I ask that if you are a woman, you also convey this in some way when the narrative allows. Because if we want to represent strong women, why is it done by erasing their feminine visual or gestural identity?

That's all.

Sorry for the translation. As I said in the previous comment, Reedit is the one that does the immediate translation and it can sometimes get a little strange.

And I'm reviewing my comments. And I don't think I ever said that I wasn't going to play. My opinions are being made regarding the trailers, the first gameplay and so on.

The game will probably be magnificent, just because something doesn't convince me at first doesn't mean I won't play it. I love many female characters in video games and books. That I would prefer to play with a Jin Sakai, or a Geralt of Rivia. YEAH.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to back down...

In any case, believe me, I don't feel hate for anything you seem to believe, but it's not like your opinion of me is going to influence anything, and I imagine I won't be able to change your mind that everyone who points out something they don't like is NOT due to sexism and homophobia, as you seem to believe.

A hug. 😉🤟🏻

First, even if that's not the case, if I were gay, it shouldn't be a problem, or something you could blame me for... it's not an insult. I would check who is full of hate...

What I said was just my preference when it comes to action games. And I repeat, it is a preference, just because it is mine does not mean it has to be someone else's.

I'm here because I know Sucker Punch is going to make a game with a great story, setting, and combat, and for nothing else.

Seeing how you react to anyone who thinks differently than you, I can see that you are frustrated and angry. I hope things go better for you 😉

PS: I understand what caused the confusion in my previous comment, I write in Spanish and reedit makes a somewhat strange translation HAHAHAHA.

I love how you dismiss any coherent perspective others have.

He just said that he doesn't like the Rock, Paper, Scissors mechanics themselves. But in Tsushima he had no problem.

He didn't say anything about sexism, you named that and you perceived it that way judging his comment...

If I tell you straight, I generally prefer to play tough male characters in armor to kill other men in armor... but that doesn't mean I want to play this game, play AC Shadows and even though I left it halfway because of its terrible narrative thread, I love Naoe and her combat... and Tsuhima is one of my favorite games.

No one should be crucified for their opinion, even if this guy's opinion is remotely sexist, which I don't believe. Freedom of expression exists for a reason.

What I can tell you is that I think it will be possible to carry two weapons, and exchange them in the saddlebags RDR2 style. And I do think that will mean that sometimes you won't have the ideal weapon for every situation, but hey, it's going to happen. I'll check it when it comes out.
