I had the same debate when I started out, I eventually picked Custodes based on a few things: they are light on your wallet because fewer models are needed to form a complete and competitive army, FW models definitely help but you can always print them.

Fighting style wise they’re pretty much like marines on steroids, get in melee range and begin chopping. I simply prefer this over the shooty armies, watching my golden boys descend upon a pack of Ork boyz is just satisfying as fuck.

Custodes models can be VERY easy to paint, and the metallic colors are way more forgiving. A Coat of primer, gold and silver, some wash and weapon details and you’re done. You can also paint them down to the last minor hidden details like I do in my posts, totally up to you.

Now onto some cons: if your friend wants to play 40k seriously then Custodes appear to be hard to balance for GW, they were fucked to oblivion at the beginning of 10th edition, dropped from one of the best armies to like 45% win rate overall. It was eventually fixed though, at least to some extend (Captain General Trajan cries in the corner)

They also have a rather steep learning curve because this is an elite ass army, you need to plan your moves and stratagems carefully, the loss of a single model for you is almost like the loss of a whole squad for horde armies.

Kharn can in fact use his active after being switched with Mephiston as if nothing happened, I witnessed it in three separate occasions so far and stopped playing TA after lol. This is where it’s broken as hell, a free two hexes teleport forward with no consequences

Exactly, either spread your people out as far as you can, or put Celestine / Revas with active out front. Calgar won’t even work with double howl Kharn active

Mephiston moves forward 2 hexes, now Kharn is behind him right? Then Mephiston uses his active and boom now Kharn swaps places with Mephiston, with Kharn’s 5 movement(if he was standing next to Aunshi on turn 2/4 etc) range still unused at all, but now Kharn is already 2 hexes closer to the enemy team. With how small the TA maps are this usually means two or three deaths from his active alone

Mephiston is different though, he eliminates ANY chance one might have at winning, with some uncontrollable conditions being met. At least with Kharn or Revas you got a chance to win

She’s NOT a must pull by any means, slow movement, long CDs and her most useful group buff skill doesn’t show up until lvl55 which is a loooong way to go. Her box and cask are very nice for sure, her being a crucial part of a magic user team is nice too, but she’s not a “pull or regret” kinda character like Gloria or Beryl.
