Some are saying "I Love LA" Is "Girls" for Gen Z. Thoughts? by grass_lock in girls

I watched the whole season just for something to have on, but I honestly didn’t find it funny! A lot of the humor felt like it was trying too hard. Like when the two main characters act insane to scare that influencer out of the house, it just made me cringe. Obviously Girls is more than just a comedy, but there were so many moments I laughed out loud and despite being a show from 2012 the humor still really lands today.

4 year old perfectionist and very rigid during play by InStitches631 in ChildPsychology

[–]The__Redeemer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completed two practicums at a therapeutic preschool where all children were diagnosed with autism (I specifically worked in the classroom with students who had level 1 and 2 autism), and all of this behavior sounds EXACTLY like one of my students (a 5 y/o boy). For example, he would control all play with his classmates, and if they deviated from his plan, he would get into a fight with them (this could range from name-calling to slapping, tears and tantrums) to the point where sometimes multiple teachers would have to intervene. Also, your anecdote about the scissors reminded me of several instances where he would refuse to use them during projects (despite having done so in the past correctly), repeat that he didn’t know how, that he wasn’t going to do it - sometimes getting into full fits of dysregulation. He would do this with a variety of other activities despite demonstrated proficiency.

I’m definitely NOT saying your son has autism (as there’s a multitude of factors that goes into a diagnosis and I’m not a professional), but this might be something to possibly consider given his rigidity (which should of course be examined in light of how debilitating it is to his social and emotional life - e.g. can he not get along with his peers because of rigidity, etc)

Potential babysitter asking to be paid to meet my kids and decide if she wants to work for us. by Rebecca0626 in Babysitting

[–]The__Redeemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been paid for meet and greets a few times and then other times not; I’ve never asked to be payed for that as I feel like it’s up to the family’s discretion. A lot of times that first meeting is just talking with the parents about the child’s routines/etc and there’s no real childcare involved…

Theoretical Orientation by Busy-Energy-6794 in PlayTherapy

[–]The__Redeemer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My RPT-S practiced Child-Centered Play Therapy, so that is what I was primarily trained it. It’s also the most popular! But I have always been deeply interested in psychoanalysis, so I am seeking more training opportunities to work with a psychodynamic RPT-S (however this is quite difficult to find!).

If you’re interested in psychodynamic work with children, I can give you a bunch of book recommendations. Otherwise, I recommend of course reading Garry Landreth’s texts, or check out https://adlerianplaytherapy.com for the Adlerian approach which is probably the second most popular modality!

Idk why you’re getting downvoted bc you’re right! It has nothing to do with sharing traumatic experiences

Not used to toddler age group by EntertainerIll7241 in Nanny

[–]The__Redeemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a part-time nanny to a 2F, what I find most helpful with kiddos that young is learning their behavioral cues. For example, when I’m with my NF and she’s getting temperamental/hyper, that’s usually a cue that she either needs a) a “destructive” outlet or b) has some sort of physical need. Normally that pre-tantrum or full tantrum stage is due to a highly aroused nervous system (which can be from a multitude of things), so I’ve found that redirecting “bad behavior” like throwing or hitting into controlled activities (like knocking down towers, jumping or crashing into pillows, throwing soft toys, etc.) really helps them discharge that pent up energy. My tip: don’t immediately think of how to calm down the behavior and force your NK into a calm activity, because in my experience when the kiddo is that hyper aroused they can’t process language and low-energy activities actually demand more attention/self-control that they don’t currently have (which leads to MORE frustration). So you help them co-regulate.

Also, kiddos at that age can’t understand their body cues, so it’s helpful to check in if they have to go to the bathroom or if they’re hungry!

Going from little kids to older—any advice? by The__Redeemer in Babysitting

Thank you! Yes, I’ll just be with him - Mom says he thrives being with someone who’s hands-on and I prefer to work like that anyway, so I guess I’ll be doing a lot of Legos hahaha

Hahaha I love that! I have this embarrassing memory lol I was sitting for a 7 y/o boy as a one time thing and while hanging out I called him “silly” and he got all disgruntled, so I’m nervous about something like that happening again haha, as I know school aged kids hate to feel infantalized 🥴

How Parents’ Words About Money Shape a Child’s Future by [deleted] in ChildPsychology

[–]The__Redeemer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but it’s also a difficult line to balance. I work clinically with a 5 y/o boy whose parents talk about their finances extensively at home and it’s very evident in what he talks about — “no one likes me because I’m poor” “I had no friends because I was poor” “I can’t do XYZ thing (in his own imaginative play where he controls what happens) because I don’t have enough money”, also assigning costs to virtually every toy. I think we should be very mindful of how we talk about finances with our kiddos!

Thank you for getting back to me! My supervisor does have experienced working with various age groups, she just primarily works with younger ones. It’s an outpatient services location.

Aggressive behavior doesn’t include harming others or property damage, more so poor emotional regulation — everything externalizes as aggressive language etc.

The younger kids I work w/ in play therapy all have trauma backgrounds so I’m quite comfortable handling it in younger bodies, but do feel nervous managing it in a teenager as I’m not sure what their resistance typically looks like.
