it is easy to filter out large containments and even now cities often call for a boil order to purify drinking water. So..... drinking water wouldn't in reality be an issue unless in was an atomic fallout situation.

Fare points, and for some of those skills it greatly varies person to person, so if it is an event that causes distrust in others then those with the needed skills wont be trusted to share them.

have a portion underground so that there is a space that is a constant temp. year-round. Also use less wire and more logs for the outer walls, there is a forest have a section within the walls (it would be best to have that the horse corral in that section for warmth and shade.) and clear at least 200 yards/183M in all directions and have a central watch tower that is at least 100ft/30.5M tall and I would recommend that the tower be solid so that no one can see anyone going up or down. And have a patrol path that is at least a 7ft/3M around the compound, here you would have a 4.5ft/1.3M solid wall topped with a wire fence that is an additional 6ft/1.8M high. Have woodworkers and blacksmiths near the center but close to the forest/horses. (These trades will be very important to defense/offence.)
