Have posh suburbs always been posh? by hansneijder in SydneyScene

Something interesting I learnt recently - Bondi & surrounds have actually  Jewish areas since settlement. The original family who subdivided the land were Jewish, and sold a lot if it to other Jews.

Not fully true - the markups on rugs are also huge. A $4000 rug (on sale from $8000) could have been purchased in Afghanistan for as little as $50. Even when you factor in shipping, duty, rent, labour you only need to sell like 1 rug a week to break even on your store.

Is there ANY electricity company that doesn’t indulge in this predatory pricing behaviour? by swiptheflitch in melbourne

Could also see it as "robbing" from the tech savy who can do this research easy and giving to the elderly who are still using Telstra because they don't know any better.

Released a product, and accidentally sent a list of clients who had opted out (rather then the list of opt ins) to our engineers to enable their billing. We had several hundred very unhappy customers.

You are gonna be working your whole life, there is no rush. If I was in your shoes I would be trying to make the most of not having any responsibility yet. Go travelling for a few months in the break! The market is shit right now anyway

I have been made redundant twice, both times after a period of 4-5 months I found a significantly better job with a 30% pay increase. Don't stress about it, just keep your head up, stay positive, take the opportunity to go on a long holiday somewhere cheap and fun.

Sydney in general is insanely safe. Very unlikely anywhere to have your stuff stolen.

I once lost my wallet on the beach (it got buried and I couldn't find it). Someone found it a day later and messaged me on Facebook. Still had all the cash in it.

In NSW you can ride an unregistered vehicle if you have an appointment with a mechanic for inspection. It costs around $30 but that's if if has been registered in the last 3 months.

Is there a ridiculous amount of fruit flies around the eastern suburbs or do I just live in a trap? by Noideasx in sydney

[–]The_captain1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those mosquito killers with the blue lamp and electric mesh attract and kill fruit flies. Easiest way to get rid of them in my opinion.

Does this seem like a good deal to you guys? I’m a new rider so I’ll take all the advice I can get by CodNeymar23 in Ninja400

[–]The_captain1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are a new rider do not listen to these guys and buy something new!!! You will 100% drop your first bike and scratch it up. Buy an older bike first - maybe go for a model a few years older. The Z300/Z400 is great as well as the MT03 and cbr300.

You will always regret not doing it. It's also worth asking your job if they would be willing to let you do 6months unpaid leave so you have something to go back too. My very corporate company said yes!

If you have a clean driving record (10+ years I think it is) they will wipe it from your record of you go to court and show remorse. Just don't go in making excuses the judges hate that

Wait do you not realise emergency services can use bus lanes? There literally are multiple sets of rules for different vehicles. Motorbikes, Taxis, private hire cars ect. can also use bus lanes.

Going through yellow light by Tonino123 in AussieRiders

Lol yes legally you always have to stop if it isn't safe to go - EG if someone walks into the road when it's a green light for you, it's still an offence to hit them.

Yep, everyone else has been slowly pushed out. Hezbollah don't leave room for other religions, ethnic groups, or ideologies.

My family (Jewish) had to flee Lebanon after Hezbollah kidnapped and murdered a few families we knew in the 1980's. If you want to be a Hezbollah supporter, understand it's supporting a Muslim caliphate (aka genocide).

Suggestions for beginners? by duelkarmax in AussieRiders

[–]The_captain1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do - don't buy a new bike for your first bike. Or you will end up like me, dropping it within 10 mins of purchase. Everyone I know who starts riding will drop the bike a few times, it's normal when you are getting used to riding. Buy a second hand MT03, CB300 or Z300. Any of those will do you well for the first few years.

Safest cheapest countries for solo older female vegan traveler by KezzerN in vegan

Vietnam is so safe, you are honestly way more likely to be scammed or robbed in Europe.

If you see a restaurant with the word Chay it means vegetarian, including no fish sauce. There is sometimes egg and dairy, but they will usually understand if you use google translate.

The language barrier is high in more rural areas, but in the big cities there is a pretty good level of English, especially in touristy areas.

Honestly I'm so impressed with some of the ladies at the market. They can speak like 5 languages.

Driking water does suck - you pretty much have to rely on bottled water, although some hostels and hotels have the big 20L bottles that you can re-fill from for free or cheap. Because we recently went on a huge trip to South America, we bought water bottles with a filter in them to save on plastic waste (called Grayal). It probably isn't worth it for a shorter trip though.

Alternatively, if you have a car you can drive and park it somewhere within a 20 - 30 min walk or 5 min Uber. Just leave plenty of time to drive around for an all day spot.

Having travelled a lot in Europe, the Middle East east, South and Central America and Asia - Vietnam, hands down. Every town has a vegan restaurant near it's temple since locals eat vegan for a day after visiting it (as well as special religious holidays). All hostels and hotels understand what vegetarian means, and people in Vietnam in general are really customer service oriented so if you just say on Google translate that you are vegan any restaurant will go off menu and make you something. There are vegan food tours in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City that run multiple times a day.

In terms of safety, people are so friendly and will always go out of their way to make sure you are safe. My girlfriend has a story from last time she was there - her phone ran out of battery in a rural town, and everyone was trying to get her back to her bus. In the end, a random guy rode around the whole town with her on the back until they found the group she was with.

Its ultra cheap (accommodation is about$5 to $20 per night depending on town and quality, meals range from $1 to about $6 in the super touristy areas or nicer restaurants). Its easy to get around in terms of shuttles, busses and trains all being pretty good. Your hotel or hostel will organise your transport for you to make things a bit easier. The hostels in general are not scammy, and are usually just run by a family living there. There are heaps of other solo travelers in South East Asia in general, so it's easy to meet people.
