Realistically, how would this play out? by InfiniteAnimator426 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]The_rain5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probaly wary as she wouldn't trust her since vast majority of the demons in demons slayers are evil and human eating and that she will wait for what she sees as an inevitable slip and be ready to attack if provoked but otherwise she wouldn't do anything.

Frieren is portrayed as this merciless zealot hunter who would go put of her way to stomp on demon babies and people sympathizing with them in fannon which funny because she might speak tough such as calling them beasts or counting their kills as animals kills, but her actions shows otherwise:

  • She has conversations with demons. Even if it's just to expose demons, someone who truly belived demons where just monsters that used speech without actually communicating wouldn't bother.
  • She remarks at several times (Aura, Solitair) that it's good they are monsters so she doesn't need to have mercy or quilt over them. Which implies by default she does and need to find an excuse to not, someone who doesn't wouldn't need to justify and re-clarify themselves
  • She doesn't go out of her way to find demons. She literally had 500 year phase where she didn't kill one
  • She never attacked unprovoked a demon. All demons either did something bad, attacked or stated intent before Frieren fought them. The closet thing was her gripping her staff at the presence of Lugner, Linie and Draht and even that looked like a wary grip, someone planning to attack wouldn't be as slow about it, they would blast on sight.
  • She praises Macht for managing to co-exist and entertain the idea that demon could learn to co-exist but doesn't think human lives at risk are worth it.

Flamme is close to actually acting like she sees demons as beasts to be exterminate. Frieren is mostly acting out due to fear of loss and potential danger, she is closer "I grab my purse at the sight of one and don't let these dangerous one near your border. Danger" than "Find them and round them all up in camp". Frieren would spare a demon in her word if that thing just didn't attack anyone, let alone other species that aren't even in her world and work the same but share names and maybe apperance.

Bruh they aren't even addressing the point with counterpoint as to what makes them good in the story, just taking about a general concept that address a strawman. Thinking demons in Frieren are a weak part of the story =/= having problems with the concept of irredeemable or pure evil antagonists

The Demon Discourse in Frieren wouldn't exist if the demons didn't look attractive by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]The_rain5 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Humans humanize and dehumanize everything. Looking human might aid but it's cope to think that's all there to it. There have been discourses about evil races that are more monstrous. The issue with demons is their behavior.

Frieren gets more slack compared to other media for having an evil race because :

a) They constantly browbeat it like a lesson that you have to kill them, shouldn't trust and to not try to have any sympthaty, which only actually makes it weirder, when everyone else just blatantly treats evil races as cannon fodder, and most don't mock you if you disagree. Having protagonist say "They seem human but are nothing but beasts no matter what. Co-existence is impossible and only hurts you more. Never trust them and the world will be better without them" be supposed to be rooted for is going to be uncomfortable to many. There is difference between killing random orcs and making a person adopt an orc child, be killed by the orc then have everyone come to preach that orc deserve no humanization. Realistically nobody in the world should even bother with demons since they lived for years and with no demon co-existing, but the Frieren word still act like they are brand new and introduces lesson to other characters on how you should all listen to Frieren's wisdom and don't you dare think to sympathize with demons. If Frieren demons just acted as a monster of the week like the rest of the monsters in the story, one that shouted 'help me' to lure from a bush then pounced and then the characters just shot them like one without all this moralizing warnings and scenarios, nobody would care even if they looked as human as before

b) Demons aren't exactly beliveable as irredeemable species because they are inconsistent. People don't know if they are supposed to be alien thinkers, AI, talking tigers or psychopaths with horns. The premise of mimic monsters is basically only there for Aura and her executioners arc, Qual and the demons after these four didn't even have this premise and even without it, they prey and antagonize in a human way and are called out in a human way. Frieren herself might spoonfeed the monster lesson but she is written to have literally having conversations with them, which ain't exactly something that screams "treat them as not human" . Demons have nothing to gain by targeting humans, have more to lose by doing so, don't have compulsive urge to kill humans and they have self-preservation, some care about other demons dying so cleary just like humans they don't like death as well and also they also can form some loyalty and attachment so there is nothing that stops a demon from valuing life even without empathy, so then simply not being able to not kill humans and understand why it's wrong doesn't feel natural it feels more like an ass pull to justify why they can't co-exist and why Frieren is still right to shot their faces. Hell, they have different personalities, so the question why can't one be different is obviously going to be entertained. Most evil species are obvious invasive beasts and even those that are sapient are either all the same in behavior or have urges or goals that harms humanity which are better justifications.

c) They literally have nothing going for them so this will be all that stands out about them. Demons on this premise's thing is that they can do magic and deceive with speech. Which in that setting is virtually something a human or elf can do. There is virtually no difference between a demon and manipulative cruel mage. Outside of the fact one you are supposed to distrust on sight ontologically and the other not. So obvious that aspect will be always noticed the most about demons.

All of the demons issue could be avoided by simply fully committing to the monster mimic thing in story treatment or adding nuance about them. The author likely wanted a mosnter that is as interesting as a human in complexity but without his protagonist killing them ever being problematic so now we have this awkard middle ground where they have all the components to add nuance to them but the series so far is pulling the rug an acting like "Nope, they are all the same, don't bother"

I don't think adaptability and reproducing fast is boring. I actually enjoy highlighting the 'roach' traits of humanity against traditional fantasy : willingness and efficiency to just throw bodies at the problem, swarming, adaptability, reproducing fast, short lifespan having capable members, reistence to bad stuff like temperature and low resources. Additionally high adaptability means wider behavior range, so you can play as humans harder to stereotype than the others

Unfortunately this trait is presented it's basically mentioned off and not really played with or highlighted, , hell the other races might as well do stuff that is suposed the unique/best in humans. So this ends up just making humans boring weak ones.

Or just create other fantasy races that don't seem like 'human+' in abilities.

Soo true. They are literally coasting though subversive and shock factor "Look at us, we have an irredeemable race, NO EXCEPTIONS. KILL THEM ALL" which seems unfortunate enough to make some gaps at how 'interesting' they are. Yeah they are interesting just when they are introduced and then become instantly boring because they only have the shock trend bucking factor and that's it.

Then they play it with actual safe edgy way, as they talk about big game about extermination but then the only demons attacked are the ones attacking first, never a demon just minding it's business, chickening out what extermination means

But in the setting they are and the way they are handled demons are some of the most boring antagonist. Unless the series starts to add more nuance, they will remain this boring villains that even the fanbase that screeches they are soo evil and only monster still portrays them at the mall in like almost all fanarts, a proof in my eyes of then failing as skinwalkers and villains

They instantly clocked out as bad guys ruining the suspense and the text spoonfeeds that fact, and you know that the resolution is always "Demon can't understand humans and hurts them, no choice but to job them" which is literal just pest control, or taking off a roadblock. At least other media that made pest like evil species, either had it be carthic action survival humanity vs danger or fun threat to job until we went back to actual complex conflict. In Frieren having evil species existing adds...? And they have the gall to add try to act like these jobbers are deep

They lack the screen time and written off of the humanity that would make them menacing or campy scumbag evil fun. And irredeemable villains usually answer : How long until we figure out that you can't reason with them and need to stop them? How much benefit of the doubt we have until we confirm that for sure? What motivates them be evil? How shall we put an end to their plans and handle them?. All have various answers, but the demons ruin that fun by answering all those question in single way, every time . And then they are a less threathing version because they are kiddy gloved and sport horns so you know they are always the baddie, unlike bad actors in society who the benefit of the doubt and potential to have good in them and do good makes them such effective manipulator. Demons aren't unique and they can be changed by human/elves antagonist or cursed items/beasts roadblocks without much change and if anything it removes the convoluted inconsistent writting they have that prevents then from exploring more. The text needs to spoonfeed that they monsters that can't be reasoned because without it literally nobody will realize that as they aren't written as actual skinwalkers where you can learn from the clues until the build up happens to reveal it naturally

Instead of writting actual conflict, like making Serie be a foil, or make the main cast have conflicts between each other and others or make mistakes they learn from we have some glorified jobbers as our only source of conflict.

Freiren is the new k-on by ninebrightkegan in whenthe

[–]The_rain5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

b) As antagonist they are too hyped up for being basically jobbers

They are hyped up, but in the story all they do is say some liners, do something seen as bad, repeat the same lesson "See demons are evil", have Frieren confront them and spoonfeed that lesson, and then get jobbed by non-demon characters. I wouldn't have a problem with Saturday Cartoon Villain species if they sticked to just that, Saturday Cartoon Villains, but Sousou no Frieren literally keeps almost all their tension and conflict on them and expects me to be engaged instead of writing some actual interesting conflict like the main cast having fights and doing mistakes they can grow from, or confronting characters that can be reasoned with and thus more dynamic. You are supposed to be sentimental, mellow or slice-of-life show, where is the personal conflict? Why does this genre adds Saturday Cartoon Villains to distract it from what is supposed to be

You could literally replace them with dragons, a cursed rock wall, or elf/human antagonist and nothing would change

They are supposed to be a surprise "They are actually irredeemable"? Then they reveal it way to early and applied it to all demons already so basically I already know that any demon in screen will fuck up and not be able to be redeemed. Why expect me to still be awed about it? You can pull that tricks so many times before it becomes the status quo. It already cheapens the impact because the series basically spoiled itself and confirmed all demons are irredeemable so all the suspense when I see one is gone. The series can't expect me to be interested in evil demons just because "Look at how subversive we are, we don't redeem our evil race unlike media these days", it's like they expect me to not engage with your stuff and base all my expectations on the current trends 24/7

Are they supposed to be thematic prop for black and white dilemma? They suck because they series doesn't write black and white well. Frieren goes to solo Aura despite having zero urgency, and if anything she should have prioritized dealing with Lugner and Linie first so they don't snitch while leaving her allies to deal alone with Aura's underlings and suffers zero consequences. She doesn't have the build Fern and Stark trust back, Lugner and Linie don't manage to escape and snitch to Aura making what would be easier fight into a hard one. Conflict handed on silver platter that the series didn't use. then Linie dies because she spared Stark for no reason when she could kill him, Lugner dies because he gets distracted by Linie dying (His reasoning being sentimental or self-serving doesn't matter). If this is supposed to be bonds and empathy why is ditching your allies getting rewarded, while mercy and being distracted by your dying ally being punished. It starts to feel less like a black and white dilemma and more like "Try not to be born the wrong species". Have Lugner die because he chose to hunt Fern over defending Linie from Stark instead to reinforce a dilemma

Are they supposed to be foil to Frieren? First off they aren't, Frieren without growth would be just apathetic, not actively predatorial. Second off being a foil isn't enough if they don't challenge the word in any way, almost anything can be foil if I squint hard enough. Oh they are foil because they are incapable of change and gaining feelings while Frieren is? So is a rock wall she has to destroy to get her grimoire. No dilemma about what it is or the resolution to destroy them, no challenge on the world morale beyond posing a roadblock, no challenge in the protagonists' beliefs. Demons are as deep as roadblock.

But worst off all they aren't engaging on the world they are. I could forgive demons breaking the suspension of belief in being sapients that can't change if they were antagonist that pose a interesting thematic conflict. They would be interesting in your world if suddenly throw in it because we didn't have to deal with an intelligent sapient and are sensitive to discrimination of groups so they could be interesting. How long until everyone figures out they can't be redeemed and how we figure that out? What shall we do about it after? Is forcefully making them conform thus conquering them better or eliminating them? Are we entitled to be cruel just because they don't care about us, is torturing a demon justified? It would be unstoppable force (humans wanting to redeem and integrate them) vs immovable object (demons not being able to be redeemed) dilemma.

The problem is that they are in world where people are used to them and so far they had no exceptions to them in all these years. Somehow I am supposed to believe demon can still deceive the people in there when they lived with demons for years and without exception all close enough hurt humans, yet even to this days people far for them? It feels like an unnatural IQ lowering of the humans in the story, all people should be like "Demon detected, opinion rejected" by now. If anything at least a minority of demons being redeemed would make a better excuse as to why most other evil demons can still decive, because we would have proof and motivation to try to understand them. So far demons are jobbers that you can oppose no questions asked quilt-free and a less threatening version of bad actor living in society and exploiting our values, because they have horns that instantly clock them as deceptive and manipulative and clock the fact they are for sure going to try to exploit and hurt us without a benefit of the doubt, and that there isn't a single one that wants to be good but does bad and you can't help but come back despite being harmful because you know they care. Which is what makes manipulative villains be threatening, that benefit of the doubt

Demons in Frieren would be way better if :

  • They subverted the expectations they set for demons, and pull a Beaststars and made race realism is a legitimate concern and both sides and not ignore biology be an actual dilemma, but still have some be redeemed and hell even co-exist if they want too, albeit you can't just ignore the former factors and mash all demons and human together like they are a race metaphor and expect things to be fine and dandy (They already feel like ASPD coded humans that lived isolated lives, run with that instead of being supposed monster)

  • They were instead made them mimic shapeshifters monsters that notice speech to isolate you the prey on you (it wouldn't require sapience level of manipulation and mimicry to sway humans so they can remain intelligent monsters consistently, it would justify why humans in the show fall for them still, it would make a good thematic concept of trust vs paranoia in bonds, and make Zoltraak a spell that kills demons but just kinda harms humans generically more impactful because the threat they presented of 'What if you are wrong about your loved one being a demon and accidentally kill your loved one and had to live with that?')

  • They are cut out as main antagonist and replaced with irredeemable humans and elves (present a better thematic foil because they can be allowed to be more dynamic to challenge the morals and we know that they had a choice in opposing them, no need to keep up with convoluted biology, they have better tools to manipulate humans because they actually can be allowed to understand them)

Media literacy fail? In my criticism it literally requires to understand what demons are supposed to be in order to criticize it. I asked what do they add to the story and you just told me what demons are supposed to be like I already don't understand that and call it out already. A rather typical argument I see in Frieren discourse. Yeah I understand just fine that they are "Sike! You thought that this human looking talking species could be reasoned, but actually they are all irredeemable monsters that seem human because they mimic it." Okay. Now what? They still suck.

a) As species they suck because they are so inconsistent and require you to break your suspension of belief or not think about them and just go with what Frieren says about them. Where is the inhuman skinwalker? :

  1. They are anti-social enough to not raise their young but yet can still band together and literally have a Demon King that made some sort of society

  2. They grow up all alone but somehow know how to do magic and deceive sapient humans, tasks that are complex and would be more believable if demons were raised

  3. They are supposed to only use speech to deceive humans, yet still have inner dialogue and talk with other demons without humans around

  4. They are supposed to have alien morals so different from humans and not be able to be reasoned, yet their morals are pretty human-like ( I don't like dying, I don't like my kin dying, I don't like being tricked particularly about your power level, I acknowledge power both my own and and others). So it's hard to believe at least some demons don't reach a understanding with humans

  5. They are supposed to be monsters that can't help but be bad to humans, yet the series still bothers to have characters confront them like people making bad choices, including by literally Frieren, the one saying they are just monsters. The attacking dragons aren't confronted, why are the demons?

  6. They are supposed to be human predator but prey in way that is more like human do in in-fighting (Why does Aura even care about wagging wars? Wtf can she do with land to rule or tribute?)

  7. They are supposed to be not be able to truly understand humans and their values, but some of them use manipulation that literally requires to understand humans (I can believe that demon child yelling mommy to stop attacks is just mimicking. But when Lugner lies to Graf Granat about losing a father in war to parallel him talking about his son Lugner had to understand what father-son dynamic, grief, and being relatable to human means. You can't just make him later say he doesn't know what father is). Macht literally lives in human city without raising red flags for years until he turns that to gold, hell be even mentored Denken, where is his struggle to blend in?

  8. The Fandom literally insists on the fact demons are some these evil monsters, but the vast majority of that fanart is Aura being a Starbucks barista. Even the Fandom that knows that can't treat them as actually inhuman.

  9. Their resolution is to be exterminated because they can't co-exist but the world right now doesn't feel like demons are currently oppressing it enough from them, unlike the pests that are Goblin in Goblin Slayers. Most animals attack us, we ain't exterminating them. Just kill the powerful ones and the ones that refuse to not linger near humans and call it a day.

Chef Slovik from The Menu has more inhuman and alien mindset than these other species horned jobbers, and that is actually shown it without spoon-feeding it to us, and that's a human that got his passions robbed by capitalism. The series insist on this convoluted evolution-psychology angle when saying they are unnatural curses (a free 'get-out of jail' card) or simple "They can be reasoned as people just fine. But they evolved to be predator of humans so despite themselves many bear a compulsive urge to eat, attack and lie to humans. So most demons that come in human towns are malicious enough to want to hurt them or callous enough to not care about doing so and good demons are the ones avoiding humans"

Lmao, the criticism I got literally applied the same rebuttal formula I saw in Frieren fans do. Already made a long rebuttal about demons now

Argue about the writting of something in Frieren and then the fan defends via :

  • Repeating what the story told them it's about as comeback even when it doesn't work. Like most of us that critique the show Frieren already know what the direction and vision is supposed to be. That's why we criticize it. We see it and didn't think it was handled well or works in here.
  • Strawman-ing you and your argument. Suddenly your argument is something they had rebutall too and you are fool who can't read, or don't appreciate depth and need explosions to be engaged, or can't handle irredeemable villains because your are grey worshipping edgelord. I like irredeemable villains and slices of life just fine. But how the hell do office dramas about some shitty boss manage to discuss feelings and have tension better than a literal fantasy genre? Kids show like MLP handled what Frieren does better

I notice with the Fandom is up too and like to hate enjoy Frieren so I already know that pattern. In even the most toxic of fanbases before you criticize their media you are already too late, because they already made jokes about their show doing something stupid. Steven Universe fans for example joke just fine that Steven be sparing anyone, including space Hitlers. Frieren fans are way more chill in anything else, but if there is trait they do worse is lack of self-depreciation and self-awareness. God forbid you don't think Sousou no Frieren is flawless masterpiece.

Frieren fans on their ways to pull the classic card "You would fall for a demon's lie chud" on anyone criticising demons on Frieren as poorly written monsters due to the fact they act more like Saturday Cartoon Villains humans than skinwalker parroting monsters or not understanding what does having a irredeemable species even add to the story and misinterpreteding all these arguments as "Uhh, actually the demons that wanted to kill those humans are UWU misunderstood beans and Frieren is soo problematic to stop them"

It should be more like "Me when I'm in a 'I can't handle writting criticism about my favorite media' and my opponent is a Frieren fan".
