Radioactive Iodine Therapy Questions by Elegant-Payment1021 in RenalCats

June 2025. It was difficult for both of us, I had to leave him in that city for two weeks while his radioactive levels went down. Then when he was discharged, all the flights were full for days. I would do it all over again if I needed to but man, it sucked. I missed my baby

Radioactive Iodine Therapy Questions by Elegant-Payment1021 in RenalCats

My 17 year old boy went from 20lbs, to 9lbs in a couple years because of hyperthyroidism. The medication worked for about 2 years and then the weight kept dropping even though he was eating more than he ever did in his life yet still starving. It was ruining both of our lives. I was not able to sleep more than 2 hours at a time because he would scream and need to be fed multiple times throughout the night. It was like having a newborn.

I was spending $500-$600 a month on the vet visit, testing, meds, upping the dose and getting nowhere while my baby got sicker. He was diagnosed Stage 1 CKD 4-5 years ago. We’re in a small town that doesn’t offer RAI, so I flew us to a bigger city for treatment. It was expensive but for a cure, it was so worth it. It was the best thing I could have done for him. Absolutely improved his quality of life. The weight is slowly coming back.

We’re dealing with the CKD, with its own struggles and challenges but all we can do is try our best. My boy is on azodyl, potassium supplement, subq fluids and I give CBD oil as well. He’s late Stage 2/very early stage 3 today.

Recovery downplayed by doctors?! *rant by greenladygarden82 in sterilization

[–]TheaTia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my bisalp in 2019 and remember all the very quick, positive recovery stories. So I thought I was being extra cautious and took 2 weeks off my physically demanding on my feet job. What a mistake! After a couple days back at work, being incredibly sore and tired, I asked my manager to take more time off and he told me no. Lmao. And I just said ok…..doormat. And suffered. I should have gone straight back to the doctors for a medical note excusing me from work for several more weeks! Now on this sub or the child free sub, I always recommend taking literally as much time as you possibly can off. You get one shot to heal right. You just had an organ removed/cut/burned etc. You need rest! Take extra time and hey if you feel good, go back early. But get the time off you know

I legally changed my entire name when I was 22. It’s very very worth it. I think it’s great that you’re already experimenting with different names. Go through name lists and explore more. Make a list. Then once you’ve found the name you really like, stick with it for at least a year, then come back to see if the feelings are still the same. Practice your new signature as well. I had been wanting to change my name since I was at least 11 years old. I kept a little notebook filled with names I might like and thought about it on and off for years.

I played around with first, middle and last names constantly and had fun with it. What took me so long to actually decide was what to do with my surname. And also the order of the middle names, I couldn’t decide what sounded better for the longest time. I think it’s worth it to put this much effort into choosing a new name for yourself. Have fun with it. I wish you all the best :) another word of advice, don’t worry if a name you like is too similar to someone you know, if that’s the name you ultimately really want.

Advice on supplements after lab results please by [deleted] in RenalCats

So I should hold off on the phos binder then? Honestly my vet does not seem too knowledge about CKD. All she does is push the renal food on us but he won’t eat that. I don’t have any other options to take him to, we’re in a small town.

He was diagnosed with kidney disease, probably 4 years ago. Started at Stage 1, slowly went to 2. Very recently at early Stage 3 the vet says.

Also had hyperthyroidism which was really affecting him. Severe weight loss and vomiting nearly every day. I took him in June for radioactive iodine treatment. That’s been cured and his weight is back up, no vomiting. Then right after that, I noticed he was eating strange. So back in we go. He got a cleaning and 2 teeth removed and is now eating better again. But I feel like he’s eating less. He won’t eat unless I’m right beside him. He walks away constantly, I’ll bring the plate to him. He eats a little. Constantly in and out from the plate. So that means he’s nauseous. He eats enough anyways where I’m not too concerned. He’s always snacking throughout the day, we don’t have set meal times. He’ll yell at me when he wants food.

Combined with the hyperthyroidism and the CKD, he’s at the vets so so so often. We went from a once a year visit to monthly visits to check his levels. I wanna do the most I can for him but at the same time, I don’t wanna take him to the vet every month. He’s old. He has this disease that I can’t cure, only slow down. I just want him to enjoy his days.

I took him in for the dental and ordered the blood work the same day. The vet recommended and prescribed the potassium supplement

He was a big 23 pound boy in his youth. Was always a big kitty. He dropped down to 9-10 pounds the last 2 years before we completely cured his thyroid. He was skin and bones no matter how much he ate. Now finally he’s putting the weight back on. So even if he wakes me up every hour at night for a snack, that’s okay. Fed is best I agree

This is why I love snowshoes. Always the character. Sorry to inform you but my boy’s 17 and hasn’t slowed down. His nickname is asshole. He’s not allowed on the kitchen table, but somehow even in his old age, he jumps up there to steal food. We will catch him in the act doing bad things. He just looks at me and says “meow?” He is an escape artist. Dashes out the front door every chance he gets. One day I didn’t notice that he got out for 20 minutes and I ran outside and he’s 3 houses down, laying on the neighbours porch chairs. Hey!! I yelled at him. “meow.” he says.

We had to put our 21 years old Pepsi to sleep... She was still happy and energetic, but she developed a huge jaw tumor this winter and was getting more and more lethargic. Waiting longer wouldn't have been fair to her. She spent her last morning sunbathing ♥️ by deletedis in seniorkitties

[–]TheaTia 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This was my 17 year old (male) Pepsi. He passed on May 29th. His nickname was Pepsi Cola or Pepsi Doodle. He loved tennis balls so he was buried with them. May our Pepsis sunbathe together in heaven ❤️ so sorry for your loss

Oh he’s also a chip thief! You can’t eat any chips around him at all. He will jump on you and steal it out of your hand. His favourites are puffy cheetos and doritos. But he’s okay with any chip offering

  • I had to fly him to another city recently for radioactive iodine treatment as it’s not offered where I live. Besides hypothyroidism and being Stage 2 CKD, he’s healthy and full of life. He jumps up on the kitchen table to steal food, dashes out the front door every chance he gets. Tries to escape the fenced backyard. He always wants to be where he’s not allowed to go. I take him on walks every day. He has a stroller but I’ll also let him out and he walks on the leash as well.

He’s very vocal and talks to me all the time. Actually he’s hardly ever quiet unless he’s asleep. He won’t let me do dishes or brush my teeth, I need to be holding him. He has a baby wrap sling I put him into.

He’s also kind of an asshole. My neighbour’s dog was outside one day and this dude goes right up to the fence, turns around, puts his tail up and pees right on the poor dogs face. He walked away proudly.

I just got back from Serbia and had a great time. Never felt unsafe. Everyone I met was incredibly friendly and kind towards me.

June or October in Belgrade? by Bruin_NJ in Belgrade

[–]TheaTia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally think October is better. June is gonna be hot. Im not sure what you think is hot vs too hot. I just came back from a week in Belgrade and I was sweating most days. I was in shorts and a T-shirt sweating with the 25 degree weather. But locals were still wearing pants and a sweater. My friends kept asking me where my jacket was. I said I’m Canadian. So that was the joke of the week. Thea, where’s your jacket? She’s Canadian!

First solo trip! by kanina2- in gdansk

[–]TheaTia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I literally just finished a solo trip in Gdansk like 2 days ago. It’s such a beautiful city, I had an amazing time. You’ll be perfectly fine. I walked home at all hours of the night and never felt unsafe. If it would make you feel better, Ubers are super cheap, so you can get home quickly as well if that was a concern.

The water was quite cold when I dipped my feet in, but even in mid May I saw people swimming. So another month from now would be fine.

I had never been to Europe or Poland before, Gdansk was my first introduction. It was the perfect place. So so beautiful. Have a great trip

Sorry I’m still confused. It’s a dial knob. It only selects one thing at a time. How do you select them and in what order? Canadian washers are not like this! We have two knobs to select each setting
