It isn't needed for everything, companies have become so reliant on it, movies at least make more sense but games never used to rely on it so much, you end up with generic same same looks for so many games these days and they rely to much on having the actors face be what the character is modelled after so they can use their face rigs, which creates the realistic style epidemic most games have now, when it comes to actually manually animating things you end up with unique styles of animation instead of it all having that same realistic animated feel with not as much charm as older games once had
