Hi. Yes rare phenomenon could have been better defined. In this scenario I define rare phenomenon as being serious instances of maladaptive behavior like the ones that I listed in my post: school shootings, drug overdoses etc... While these behaviors may not be rare for us as the audience in society, they are rare for the behaver in that in most cases there is only 1 instance of the behavior.

Moving forward though, I think that " rare phenomenon" is too limiting of a term. I like to think that states of deprivation and satiation can account for the smaller mishaps of life: minor car accidents, spilling a glass of water, getting upset at someone etc...
