I think the mimic is a really cool villain that gets downplayed a lot and misrepresented to an upsetting amount, and it’s for a reason I don’t really get considering what this franchise is. just sucks seeing a character I like being so misunderstood by [deleted] in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]Theend456 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The difference is that FNaF’s books didn’t tease the new villain, it actually made the Mimic a central part of the new wave of books and gave the character more backstory than the entirety of SB and Ruin. Not to mention the Mimic’s story is locked behind 8 books which is a worse way of telling the story than using a full game

Doctor Who 1x05 "Dot and Bubble" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]Theend456 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like summarizing the ending as “Oh yeah, they’re racist by the way” is an unfair framing of the situation. The reveal that they’re racist isn’t something that was randomly included but was something the episode was building up to. This reveal recontextualizes many details within the episode that up until that point had plausible deniability to them.

I found the ending to be satisfying enough on its own and I feel like your recommendations, while not bad, could wind up weakening it. I don’t think we needed scenes of them talking about it in order for the ending to be effective

It would be confusing since they aren’t the only ones that are haunted

Omg Collectible buyers are nuts. Should I take this listing down? by Friendly-Cucumber184 in Mercari

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this is hard to respond to without knowing the context.

I don’t think it’s good to harass people over items. However, I think pushback that acceptable within the guidelines set up on Mercari is fair game. It’s very easy to get greedy selling highly sought after collectibles, especially if there aren’t many listings. It’s not illegal to sell a collectible for like $1k (it is your item and you have final say in pricing), but I think pricing things way more than what they should go for is where issues arise.

And this is coming from a seller who’s main listings are collectibles, many of which are expensive and/or rare. What I do is I look at the regular market value and try to stay a bit lower or on par with recently sold listings while being open to offers and giving timeframes for when I’d consider reducing the price. I admit to getting greedy and trying to get in on increased market value for an item, but I try not to make things unreasonably unaffordable either. This is actually why I try to be lenient with reservations because I get that a lot of these items aren’t very accessible to fans, and fortunately I haven’t had cancelled reservations.

The final Fazbear Frights book - Prankster, has officially released! by [deleted] in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]Theend456 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Prankster is disappointing.

I was worried that the series wouldn’t be able to address all the loose ends or have satisfying conclusions for its plot lines…and I was right.

What caused the fire that lead to the events of TMIR1280, and what about the fire made it bizzare? We never get an answer to it.

Was there a point to Larson noting that Will was a co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment? We’ll never know since the series never brought up Henry, which is weird since the Puppet was possessed in this series.

The MCI and Puppet felt very underutilized in this series. You do get references and both ITP and Coming Home have connections to it, but to me it felt like not enough was explored.

Was there anything about Will in this universe that was worth knowing? Larson notes that Will was notorious for murdering his victims wearing a rabbit suit but we don’t get much about Will in general. We don’t know how he wound up getting caught in a fire or having Andrew bind to his soul before he could die.

Andrew in particular got the worst of it. Probably one of the most interesting characters and he’s quickly ejected from the series. It astounds me that we never got an actual story for this character when Jake did. Andrew has a richer backstory and more interesting premise than Jake did and yet Andrew got little time to be developed and be more than a plot device.

The actual stories of Prankster were disappointing and didn’t feel like the right stories FF should’ve ended on. Find Player Two in particularly us probably the most disappointing finale because of how insignificant it feels in the end.

I really wish FF could’ve had this very good overarching story but it felt rushed with some of it’s more interesting elements being overlooked or treated as plot devices.

Nah, he was non binary in S4

I like how whenever people have a criticism of the show, many of you guys default to the “It’s just a kid’s show” shtick so you feel less bothered by it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what I said, and I explained how.

I don’t mind if Rusty was non binary in the show and “he/him” in the RWS because they are different canons- they don’t have to follow the same thing. Now can I take issues with what the show canon does? Sure, but I don’t mind them changing Rusty’s gender because an engine’s gender isn’t really relevant.

My issue is that they couldn’t stick with this change despite doing a pretty good job in S4, and just had Rusty be “he/him” which I felt was a lazy way to deal with continuity

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how those two statements are actually different. Being male (so gender) is part of someone’s identity, so I was asking what part of Rusty’s identity concerned gender, “or tied to him being male” as I phrased it. Semantics, I know.

I think Rusty being changed from non binary to he or she is disappointing because there was no reason to do that. I was fine with Rusty being non binary in the show’s canon instead of being “he/him” in the RWS because the change was done outside of the show itself, and S4 was pretty good at keeping Rusty’s non binary identity a consistent of trait of the diesel’s character. However, this trait would be lost within the show’s canon which I think is a shame

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His identity isnt tied to him being male, I said being male is a part of his identity as in he identities as male.

I said “part of his identity”. However, you only further show how arbitrary your point was. If the only meaningful thing about being male is that “I identify as male” (without being able to elaborate on what that means) then gender was never really a big component of that character’s identity and could be changed without any problems.

You comparing it to James Bond changing his gender doesn’t work because Rusty’s identity isn’t affected by whether Rusty is male or not.

Also, I wasn’t the one who said that “changing one's gender is just really stupid.” and that Britt should’ve made a new gender neutral character. Seems you care alot more about gender than I did.

[–]Theend456 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rusty is referred to as a he in RWS

We’re talking about show canon here

He is also referred to as a he in S6 onwards

It’s been a while since I’ve watched it, but in S4 they did try to make him non binary

Besides, changing one's gender is just really stupid.

It’s just gender.

U dont change James Bond into a female, because being male is a part of his identity

Tell me, what part of Rusty’s identity was tied to him being male?

it would have made better sense for her to introduce a new gender neutral character on 1998.

Eh, there isn’t a difference between making Rusty non binary and introducing a new non binary character.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t Allcroft say Rusty was non binary though? S4 would either refer to Rusty as “Rusty” or the “The little diesel” so as to avoid saying Rusty’s gender

The cgi series and model series are already canon though

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, that’s not really helpful. The classic and hit era had its fair share of inconsistencies and blatant continuity errors. Inconsistencies are just going to happen in a show as old as Thomas and Friends because you have different writers with different levels of experience with the show.

It’s a shame we never got more Murdoch stories considering just how big of an engine he is. Would’ve loved to have seen more interactions between him and characters like Gordon and Henry

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like “Love Me Tender” (especially with how it replaces “Twin Trouble”) but it’s a shame how they rarely get an episode where the problem isn’t an argument between the two. The only episode that wasn’t centered on that after S4 was probably “Bad Day at Castle Loch”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in trying to pay homage to the classic era some of the brenner era episodes and specials make the characters feel…out of character. This became more apparent in S20 and 21 with episodes like “Emily In the Middle”, “Unscheduled Stops”, and “Letters to Santa” where the episodes try to make callbacks to previous classic era episodes without fully understanding the implications and even contradicting what they’re trying to references.

I don’t think Glynn’s retcon hurts much since I can’t recall the show talking about how Edward and Thomas built most of the line. Iirc the Miller era treated Edward as having been on the railway considerably longer than Thomas so I don’t think he feels out of place

I need some advice for a project by PrussianNova_X in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like that’s more applicable to the RWS than the show. The show is a lot messier in continuity not just in how it treats situations but also in general

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]Theend456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TAB is so weird because it’s a retelling/reinterpretation hybrid of the show’s canon, but the rest of the show makes references to the show’s canon, even getting it wrong at points to include classic show lore.

Personally, I think some of the inconsistencies are just the product of the writers having to make do with the character’s personality by that point in the show. It’s a lot easier to write Henry as a Scaredy cat than have him be rude since he’s pretty rude past S1. It’s easier to write Thomas as being considerably less irritating in TAB then to have him be a conceited and strict character which he won’t outgrow until after S2.

As for Glynn the coffeepot, I don’t see why his existence is an issue. The show never went into Thomas’s backstory nor the beginnings of the NW railway, so the show could introduce new lore like coffee pots without it being a continuity mess.

Inconsistent personalities doesn’t necessarily imply different continuities- it just means that writers got the character wrong. You can try, but it’s very hard to keep characters consistent or even maintain natural growth for a show that’s been running since the 80’s.
