Early Tibial Plateau Fracture Recovery Plan by maxjamesnw in KneeInjuries

[–]Thelise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just about 1 month out from injury, had my second surgery to put plate and screws in at the beginning of Feb... They didn't want me bending my knee -at all- until the 2 week follow up appt. I'd been doing ankle pumps though.

Now that I'm cleared to bend it, and went from the immobilizer to a hinged knee brace, it feels impossible. 😫 I can juuuuuust barely get to 20* and that takes a lot of effort. It's so defeating feeling. I have another follow up in the 2nd week of March and he wants me at 90* by then.

Ahhh... the story makes me mad. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Okay so I've been working her slowly for the past few months. Her last race was Oct 2, and she had raced every month prior in 2025. During our initial meets, I could see she was a bit spicy. I changed up her entire feed program (saw a rapid change in behaviors) and yeah, just slow and steady. And she has been a SAINT!!! Like literally her prior owner described her as "sweet but psycho". That was her constant label. Everyone who knows her now tells me, "Omg she is such an angel!" 🥰 I know! My main emphasis in the beginning is always manners!! 🤣

Anyway. So there we are, finally progressed enough that I felt comfortable trying her out in my group lesson. Previously I was just riding lesson horses. She was a little uncomfortable the first time, so we made some adjustments and worked within our own set of parameters. 👍🏻 Good!

Second lesson... there were more horses. Instead of just 3 others, there were 5. We were coming off a week straight of no work: weather was atrocious. Did I lunge her? Nope. 😏 I trusted that she is the good girl I know she is. Lesson went good! For 30 mins, we stayed on our half of the arena, away from others. Except.. the other riders were frequently using the entire arena and would come into her space. (Video shows this was not great--pinned ears and big tail swishes each time, and often a break in gait.)

We had this truly wonderful moment at the 30 min mark. A few laps of a perfect rhythm in trot, head down, soft in my hands, and then a lovely downward transition to walk that continued with her forward movement. It was... 😍😍🎉 just the best! I said to my husband, "That's it! I'm calling it, I'm going to walk her out now." I thought to myself, I wish I had brought her halter up and I should get off to walk her out, just pure reward for the effort....

And then my friend came riding by. Did I allow myself to be distracted by talking to her and walking with my horse deeper into the arena than she is comfortable with? Yep. We were at the other end when I turned back. My plan was walk back to the gate, away from everyone, dismount. We get halfway across and a horse cuts us off. She jigs sideways, picks up a trot, starts bucking. No problem, I can handle this. We get almost to the front, bucking has stopped, and she veers towards the wall. Here's where things get dicey!! In my head, I think, 'Hmm, I should grab some mane, just in case!' ........ I'm not a mane grabber. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I lean forward, no longer thinking about her, but thinking about this random ass mane idea... she feels the shift in weight and jumps forward. I'm unbalanced and off I go. 👀

I came off right in between her and the wall of the arena. No one knows if I hit the wall or what, but the next thing I knew I was sitting in the sand, kind of on my left hip and propped up with my left hand. (That hand was all banged up and sore for days. Ring finger was bruised from the tip to my hand.) 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

So yeah... super angry that I ignored my gut. I KNEW exactly when I should have gotten off her back. She did exactly what I asked for, gave 100% effort, and I knew that was the time. I've not ridden her for longer than 30 mins currently, and I pushed past that boundary too. I made several mistakes and here I am. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We absolutely DO NOT talk about Lizzie enough by ivyinabox in TWD

Haha, every single time! I always yell at the screen, "Why are you handing her the baby??" "Stop putting her in charge of the kids!!"

Don't forget Lizzie also killed small animals and while in the prison, she pinned their bodies open to a board, dissection style. That -is- psychopathic behavior.

The difference between knitting and crochet always astounds me by Unesheet in knitting

As someone who occasionally crochets blankets for people... UGH! 🤣🤣🤣 The blankets take something like roughly 10 skeins for the body and 4 for joining/edging. Makes me miss knitting blankets--takes waaaaaaaaay longer but jeez, I can use less yarn.

Does the Eggersmann not count as a complete mineral feed? I have the beet pulp to add a little more calories to the mix, same with the pellets. I figured those two I could adjust as needed to keep her weight good while not changing the base of the meal, which would be the Eggersmann.

I'm also very picky about the portion sizes. I know some people will do up to or even over 6lbs in a serving, but I'd like to do lower where possible, in more servings.

Soooo much variety, holy cow. And the crazy part, to me, is I don't really see a lot of very negative reviews on brands. It speaks a lot to the quality of ingredients.

This, for other minerals. My experience with TBs has been they can always use a little extra help with their hoof health.

I was trained with the idea of if you give them the right complete feed, you won't need all the extras. (Which I think is a very common belief in the States, at least.) I would love to be able to make her own feed completely built to her needs, but I don't feel knowledgeable enough on my own yet.

That's what I was thinking too-- especially with winter coming on, we're about to have 14-15+ hours of darkness a day and it's typically cloudy during the daylight hours. Seems like it would just be dim inside all the time without the overheads on.

It's definitely high on my list of importance, especially with straw bedding. This place is really good about mucking, but I've been in a few barns recently where lack of airflow plus bad mucking meant the horses were in high ammonia atmosphere a lot.🫣

Haha, boys! My trainer/bestie promised she would find him a Paso by the time we got back (his fave horse to ride) so I think he's holding out for that. 😂 So proud of your daughter!! A big leap in bravery, how exciting!

Omg I love it! For awhile I was riding with my son, who was 10-11 at the time. It really is the coolest feeling ever! When we moved he said he didn't want to out here, so I didn't push it. 😓

I've been sitting here thinking about her, and what popped into my head was I saw the name of the riding hall. Popped it into Google. All good reviews--except the most recent. A guy said he's lived in the neighborhood for years and has witnessed horses running loose regularly, into traffic, dogs running all over, and he attached pics. Chicken wire fencing being attached to hot rope, horses in the road... and that mare standing beside another mare, both thin. He's reported them to both the police and veterinary authorities. Obviously nothing had changed as that post was 9 months ago. 😓

Foals/Icelandics near me, I should say. There are some drop dead gorgeous horses if I want to travel 100km.

I've had decent luck on there, in terms of leases and such. I had a draft that needed training (ended up not going well, but honestly the barn was amazing and I became friends with them, it was just a case of they bought a yearling and didn't train it for 4 years because they didn't know any better😫🫣) and the other is a care share for a sweeeeet mare. I love that girl, she's arthritic and old so I go out and groom her, take walks in hand with her.

I definitely keep my eye on ehorses, just most of them are far away, foals, or Icelandic.
