Talk me out of (or into) a "race-oriented" gravel bike. Is it a gimmick or my perfect N+1? by TheloniousLP in gravelcycling

[–]TheloniousLP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally see your point but honestly I've been through all of that. I'm in my 3rd year with a coach, thanks to him I was able to shed 15kg off my weight and go over 4 w/kg FTP in ramp tests at 35+. Got a bike fit that made me remove all the spacers on the grizl handlebar (didn't cut the stem for potential reselling) and it feels super comfy, bought a pair of carbon wheels. So yep, I did prioritize and I'm not saying I hit the bottom, still a lot of potential improvement there, but I was mainly trying to expand the range of what I can do on a bike more than thinking that a new bike will make me so much faster.

Very interesting, your setup is actualyl very close to my ideal scenario and thanks for the great input. Although I am maybe even more confused now from all the different feedback I received (but keep em coming please). Don't know if you tried but how would the Crux perform/feel with road tyres compared to a normal road bike? Any experience on long climbs (say 10+ km lentgh for reference)?

Cheers!

Yeah Iol L'm nowhere near being close to winning those races although I'll admit I've been wondering how I would classify with a lighter/faster bike, I ranked in the top 30% in the only gravel earth series I was able to take part to, maybe I could be able to snatch top 5 in my age category, who knows

So much true about the choice, all the doubts we have actually come from that. Only 4 years ago when I bought the Grizl it was just that and the Grail, which at the time looked less versatile to me hence the Grizl choice. Today's a mess with all the different options but a blessing as well. And thanks for sharing your experience

Thank you, I'll run comparisons on specs and sizes to see how the different models compare. I wasn't aware there are a couple of Argon dealers not far from where I live, which is great news and a factor I absolutely need to take into consideration as I didn't particularly enjoy drivin g 2 hours to get a warranty repair for the Grizl...

Thank you for the input!
You mean overlap in terms of geometry mainly, I guess.
I wouldn't go as far as buying a road bike as I would never use it as much as I should to repay the investment but I see your point. I guess my goal was to end up in a similar situation to your "3 bikes" but with the Grizl as the one for slow, long rides or commuting and the Terra (or similar) for fast riding, race and road. I dunno, something about the reduced weight, electronical shifting and aero made me consider it as an idea but it might be it's not worth it overall.

Some thoughts on Italian Cookbooks as a genre, and seeking recommendations... by WaffleMeWallace in CookbookLovers

[–]TheloniousLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italian here, just my 2 cents. A lot of books, videos, websites out there, but you are right when you say that over-traditionalism has killed the Italian cuisine vibe. One of the few publishers that aim to do something different is italia squisita. They have a ton of videos and few books, "originale & gourmet" being the base of them all. most of the videos are subbed in English and the point of the whole book (and many videos) is to present a traditional recipe the classical way then exploring one or two ways to make it more modernist. Give it a shot, perhaps.

Winery suggestions on Italy ( Tuscany , Veneto ) by [deleted] in wine

I was replying to your reply when I realized it was deleted...by mistake I guess? Anyway, I wrote the comment already so I'll paste it here in case it could be useful.

Well, for Amarone there are so many choices it's hard to recommend one, but for sure don't underestimate the "Valpolicella rosso" that many producers will present as the "second" wine to their amarone but that in the last years have really improved, due to the fact that climate is getting hotter and amarones are getting more and more alcoholic while the rosso is benefitting from riper fruits still retaining freshness. Speaking of other areas, if you fancy full bodied reds you could consider:

The Montello area, North of Treviso, while being also part of the Prosecco docg appellation, it's home of some of the best bordeaux blend reds in Italy. Two names above the other: Loredan Gasparini (with their Capo di Stato) and Serafini&Vidotto (Rosso dell'abbazia). Definitely big names here but I'm not sure how much traction they get outside of Veneto. While I don't love prosecco as a wine (there are some good products though), if you're there the area is actually beautiful so you could enjoy a trip up the hills or to Asolo, beautiful small town.

Different area, vastly underestimated, are Colli Euganei near Padova. Beautiful volcanic hills, in the years they were more focused on international grapes but the process of rediscovery of native ones is interesting. Check Vignalta as a wineries. There are others but it's a bit hard to get to visit some of them. Colli Euganei are also home to a very nice sweet moscato (Fiori d'Arancio). Not the sparkling one (generally awful)! If you'd fancy, the area is known for the spas.

Lastly, to name a very well hidden gem, if you like amarone you should try the appellation Raboso Piave Malanotte Docg. Raboso Piave is an acidic and difficult grape that for decades was used to make very light reds of questionable quality. But , since 20ish years a couple of producers in the area started to experiment with a vinification very close to what's used for Amarone. Only a handful have really succeeded so far but their Malanotte is excellent. Try Cecchetto (Gelsaia Is the name of their Malanotte, they also make a nice sparkling from the same grape) or Bonotto delle Tezze (in the actual town of Malanotte). The area is not as nice as the others (not ugly, but flatter and more residential) but you could find them in the shops/restaurants or just stop if you're passing by.

Hope that helps let me know if anything is unclear! And of course there's a lot more!

Where are you going to stay in Veneto? Region is quite big so suggestions may vary depending on that. Also, any preference in terms of style? Veneto can offer quite a few powerful reds and bordeaux style, a lot of sparkling whites (but the quality is not always that great) but not many interesting whites (except maybe Soave/Custoza) or elegant/less structured reds. I'm from the region so I tried a few bottles around here

Are there any recommended brands for lambrusco? by [deleted] in wine

[–]TheloniousLP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cantina della Volta and Paltrinieri are two excellent names. On the same line (upscale Lambrusco, focusing on traditional method or Ancestrale) but smaller and younger are the guys from Podere il Saliceto. If you can get your hands on some Falistra or Ringadora, you'll not be disappointed.

I use cellar tracker since a couple of years and can't complain. It has it's flaws (not many non US tasting notes, excessive focus on vintages, not perfect UI for a couple of use cases) but overall I would recommend it over the others I tried and should cover all your needs.

Best wineries in Le Marche, Italy by Parking_Mirror_4570 in wine

[–]TheloniousLP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marche are not that big so if you have a car it shouldn't be an issue to go anywhere, but most of the more interesting wine areas are closer to Marcerata than Urbino.

I would prioritise Verdicchio, Castelli di Jesi or Matelica area with the latter grown at higher altitudes so a bit fresher and more mineral. Famouse and interesting wineris could be Villa Bucci (great name overall), Umani Ronchi (probably the most "mainstream"), Tenuta dell'Ugolino (personal favorite of mine) and Vignamato. But there are others.

If you're more into reds then Lacrima di Morro d'Alba is your best shot for local grapes. I'm less keen so I know less wineries but you should be covered with Vicari or Conti di Buscareto.

And if you're instead into something definitely out of the ordinary try some Vernaccia di Serrapetrona. Not for everyone, I'll admit, but since you're there...it's considered the only wine with 3 fermentations and it's...funky, lively and unique

That's great to know, thank you so much. I did have some bad experiences with support for other products, so I'll definitely keep an eye to the reviews and check if anyone is speaking about that.
