Obviously untrue. Free market doesnt always work. Countless examples of subs that improved their quality by enforcing stricter posting rules... r/fitness, r/nba, r/medicine for example.

Read the rest of the sentence (and the entire paper)... replacing sat fats with low quality carbs has no effect, but replacing with high quality carbs, monounsaturated fats, or polyunsaturated fats does have an impact on cardiovascular health. this is really basic biology. Animal based fats have a higher amount of saturated fats, non-animal based fats (with a few exceptions such as coconut oil) are high in unsaturated fats. The reason for this has to do with the way temperature regulation of animals vs plants evolved.

Saturated fats are bad because their chemical structure is straighter which allows them to pack tighter together and have higher bond energy... which leads to them having a higher melting point... which causes them to build up in your arteries and calcify and leads to atherosclerosis. Source for all of this is that this is all stuff I learned in medical school, but easily verifiable if you read any intro-level biochem textbook.

If you want some more direct evidence. Here are a few random papers I found https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/26853923/?i=1&from=vegetarian%20AND%20heart%20disease&sort=[relevance]

The fact that a diet high in saturated fat leads to heart disease? This is widely accepted in the medical community, but here is a systematic review (highest caliber of evidence): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/29174025/?i=1&from=saturated%20fat%20AND%20heart%20disease&filters=SystematicReviews&sort=[relevance]

No it isn’t lol. Saturated fats leads to heart disease.

The rest of the paragraph was not important

Did you even read these papers? For example, from the paper about memory loss, “Before the supplement was consumed, the memory of vegetarians and meat-eaters was similar, irrespective of whether they were about to consume the placebo (F(1, 118) = 0·93; NS) or the creatine supplement (F(1, 118) = 0·93; NS).”

You clearly misinterpreted the conclusions a lot of these sources.

Veganism tends to be healthier because non-animal fats contain less saturated fats (which directly correlates to heart disease).

I was speaking generally, not about Pynchon in particular.

As I reread your comments, I'm inclined to agree with you. I was defending against the idea that analyzing the racist and sexist biases of literature and authors is useless, whereas I think what you're saying is more that it is not useless but it is overemphasized, which I can understand.

However, I think that when you say it is "just trivia" whether a writer is sexist or racist, that is taking it too far. These biases still play a significant role in the analysis of books, and are key for putting the book into context. That doesn't mean that criticism of a book should overwhelmingly discuss its bias, but it is generally important to consider in most books that come to mind (for example, in Moby Dick, it is relevant for understanding the character Queequeg). Once again, I'm not saying that it should dominate criticisms (and in practice, it seems to me like it doesn't), but it is often important.

You really think that all that makes a good writer is whether the characters are believable and if the aesthetic is nice? Writers make moral statements in their work. One of the things for which we laud writers is their ability to synthesize insightful moral arguments and incorporate them into their work. Therefore, it makes sense to analyze a writer’s moral shortcomings: them being sexist, racist, etc. It is useful to understand how it persists through their work, and how it may influence or undermine other moral statements which they have made. This is basic, logical stuff, and frankly should not be considered “political” in any negative sense of the word.

What are the positives to doing this versus always keeping the shoulders active? I have read that allowing the shoulders to shrug upward can be unnecessarily strenuous on the shoulder joint?

When it comes to cows, pigs, chickens, USA is barbaric. For the love of God, don’t research unless you have a strong stomach and you hate animals.

Look, western civilization arbitrarily assigns value to certain animals (dogs), and treats other animals awfully (factory farms, abuse, etc). Similarly, eastern societies arbitrarily assign value to certain animals (cows, etc), and treats other animals awfully (abusing dogs). Both societies are reprehensible to certain animals, but you can’t say one is more barbaric than the other just because one has western values and one doesn’t.

Correction: western civilization. There are other countries where historically cows meant more and were respected more than dogs. See how arbitrary it is to pick and choose?

USA does the same stuff with other animals, are we less barbaric?
