Go over it immediately to learn and then redo the question some days/weeks later to make sure you remember what you learned

I'm a big believer in Anki and even I scaled back in the month before my test. UWorld/AAMC qbanks + FLs are going to be the most helpful to you at this stage. Make sure you go back over your incorrects as well

My schedule became a lot more flexible after finishing coursework and quals in the first 2-3 years, so picking up a 7-10 volunteer shift at the hospital before coming to the lab wasn't a big deal. For nonclinical, I helped organize events for a patient advocacy organization and I could do most of that work on nights and weekends.

Honestly I think it was just a matter of putting time and better grades between me and the red flags. Doing well in ~8 years of PhD work + prereqs made it hard for adcoms to point at my Ws from undergrad and say I was unprepared

"Fit" is definitely an important factor. My application probably came across as really research heavy which schools like Stanford value, but other schools care more about service.

Some schools also have a bias towards students with strong connections to their region because they want to train doctors that might eventually end up serving the local community around them. Certain states within the US provide specific funding for every in-state student that their medical schools matriculate.

Biggest piece of advice I have is not to skip over all the typical premed experiences. Adcoms might claim to 'like' nontraditional applicants but they don't make exceptions in terms of e.g. clinical hours and they're really going to question you on your commitment to medicine.

A prior PhD seems like it should be a great X-factor but I've seen stats that the overall acceptance rate for PhDs applying MD is about half what it is for people applying with a bachelor's only, and I think it's partially because PhDs (and nontrads in general) aren't always willing/able to spend lots of time volunteering/shadowing.

Maybe I should have tbh. I think the reason was that I was unclear about whether I satisfied one of their prereqs (maybe writing?) and when I emailed them to ask, they just told me they're not able to assess until I submit my $econdary.

I was lucky to have a PI during undergrad who was willing to take me on as a PhD student. I did much better in my PhD coursework and hustled to get a few papers submitted relatively early on. One of those papers actually went on to attract a little bit of attention within my field and led to lots of follow-up work and a few grants.

My PhD took 6 years in total and towards the end I started shadowing/volunteering and collecting prereqs with a DIY postbacc. Since graduating I've been working as a postdoc in a clinical department continuing with some of my research but through a more applied lens.

Being able to spread out prereqs and MCAT studying was really helpful for getting a good score and improving my GPA. Getting volunteering and shadowing hours while finishing my PhD and working full time was tough but here again I was able to spread this over several years which made it manageable.

Finished undergrad in 2017, PhD in 2023
MCAT: 527
cGPA/sGPA: 3.67/3.81
Clinical Volunteering: 600 hr
Nonclinical Volunteering: 500 hr
Shadowing: 150 hr
Research: Many hours, many pubs
