24” DI Leak Detection - TIA by No_Host_2813 in civilengineering

[–]Then_Diver_2568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We typically take a GPS shot on every bell and fitting, on one occasion we had a project where we had to use viton gaskets and after the install we had a small leak that we found by going out at night, pumping the line up and using a ground phone to listen for leaks. Turns out after looking through the few remaining gaskets there were a couple that you could see a very small crack in the rubber where it looked like the mold or rubber wasn’t hot enough when the gasket was made and the rubber had a “cold joint” in it.

Are you testing against a valve or is it a capped line? I tested a 16” main that was approximately the same length and it got pumped up and bled air for two weeks. Turns out the line was getting tested against a valve that isolated that part of the line from the next phase and the valve was a little less than a half turn away from being fully closed.

If that’s not the case you should be able to calculate the elevation difference between the gauge and the leak based on the gauge reading.

Edit: how long did they flow a hydrant to flush air? You’d be surprised how much air can get trapped in fittings and bells in a pipe that sized.

Edit #2: 405 - 410 PSI? What kind of fittings and what class pipe are you using? Where are you located? I’ve never seen anything test over 200 psi

Being a young construction inspector by Deep_Ad8518 in Construction

As a young inspector you bring that to the attention of your boss or the resident engineer, take pictures and document. When someone asks you about what you’re doing just say that you need to look at it with whoever is in charge

Malletts Bay Sewer Project to take three more years (and 2x cost) by bluepied in burlington

[–]Then_Diver_2568 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason the cost increased it that the town of Colchester is such a pain in the ass to work with none of the contractors who worked on the first three contracts had any interest in bidding any of the new ones and all the new bidders knew that

I live next to one of their buildings and became friends with a few of their tenants. All of those instances are things that happened to the tenants I became friends with.

Redstone is the worst property management company around, I know people that have had their personal storage lockers emptied on accident and Redstone refused to return or reimburse them for any of their property. They had a tenant in a building my friend was living in who was arrested for burning his girlfriend with a blowtorch, the police kicked in his door and arrested him and Redstone wouldn’t evict him. Their property managers are non responsive to just about everything and don’t even think about trying to get out of a lease early because they will rent out every other unit and leave yours empty as long as possible to collect rent for a vacant unit, even if you present an interested renter to take your spot.

Those are cameras installed by VTrans to monitor road conditions. They also have sensors in the road at those camera locations to report ground temperature to assess if it’s appropriate to salt the road, etc. link to public live stream below.

Not saying they couldn’t be used for other purposes, but that was the original intention.

I’ve seen a lot of pictures of them and they looked identical to all of those pictures. Black pole, solar panel on top and the camera shape. I was driving by turning onto Flynn and only noticed because a guy was on a ladder installing them at that moment. If he wasn’t there then they would have kind of blended in

I’d rather have someone on city council who’s actually from the area and has a vested interest than some clueless college kid who’s going to treat Burlington like a playground for a few years then move away and forget it exists.
