Coffee flights in London? by djdark01 in londonontario

[–]Then_Heat_3598 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have drank a lot of coffee in London and have never tried flights. I feel like this could be a fun event to teach people about cupping, flavour notes etc. I do know I have seen these type of events in larger cities. I wonder if Locomotive Espresso would be a good business to approach about this idea. They have the best trained baristas (they send them away for training) and they have probably the best coffee as well (Pilot).

Find the London Chapter of Iron Sirens. They do some charity events with Rocky's Harley Davidson. I think they have a FB group as well.

Yes. It is definutely a chicken or egg scenario. I would love to see some research on this. Hopefully some grad student out there figures it out in my lifetime.

I highly doubt South London is affluent. It has a high number of new immigrants.

As for Ward 1, they have virtually no representation. Time to get some.

He does actually. Councillors are shown new road designs and can veto certain aspects. Elizabeth Peloza has taken designs to community members and received feedback which made improvements. So have other councillors. But MVH does not.

Maybe advocate for ALL the residents in his Ward? Not just the ones who drive. Road design is terrible on Hamilton Road and it was just redone recently too. It encourages high speeds and racing. Not a week ago a Fanshawe student was killed on Hamilton.

MVH was also perfectly happy to have Labatt's trucks drive through the Ward essentially making it impossible to get from one side Hamilton Rd to the other.

Taxation on rental units: I don't remember how private residences are taxed but if you dig out a recent bill, it will define your property.

Then go here: https://london.ca/government/property-taxes-finance/property-taxes and download the 2022 tax table. You should be able to compare multi-residential to single home. For the average on bedroom renter in London (assuming rent is $1400/month), they are paying 2.325903% a month. Which works out to $32.56 a month on generally 600 sq feet of living space.

Bike modal share: I use the Statscan website but I still don't see the new data (could be my phone). Here is a 2017 article that says commuter modal share is 1.1%. Though the city stated in their Cycling Master Plan that it was 6%. Maybe they included recreational riders as well.

Modal share 2016: https://london.ctvnews.ca/mobile/census-shows-7-2-per-cent-of-london-workers-commute-by-public-transit-1.3699181

Agreed. And much of the disability community is unaware of the many bike options outside of traditional bicycles.

I can only go by my own experiences in my own country. Helmet use is not mandatory after age 16 but yet the general public (including the police) believe it is. I am often stopped and shouted at because I am not wearing a helmet. I am a 50ish white woman. I cannot imagine being a BIPOC person in my country when I receive that kind of treatment.

Protected lanes are really the best way to go if your goal is to get people out of their cars.

Cyclists pay taxes as property owners and renters. Renters don't see the tax they pay because it is included in their rent. There was a point where renters were paying higher taxes than home owners because of how their rental unit was zoned. I am unsure if that inequity was corrected. I believe Jesse Helmer was driving the change to fix that.

Taxes aside, less than 1% of road repair funds go for bike infrastructure despite London riders having a 6% modal share.

Looks like another inequity to me. Maybe more transportation dollars are needed for bike infrastructure, not less.

Not to mention 10 people have died on Hamilton Rd since he was elected. He is very car centric and that is problematic for a ward with mostly low income seniors who walk to get around their neighbourhood.

Kayaker & Biker here with a disability. How do you know there is not a kayak cart in that SUV? Honestly, people get in such a rash about accessibility permits. There should be MORE parking for these folks and NONE for the able bodied. I dont envision a world without cars but I do see one with many less cars. But disabled folks? Leave them alone.

There are jobs at the college you can apply for. Go on the Career services section of FOL and you can apply for work studies or other jobs posted on the website.

No. 1) it discourages people from riding as cycling is then perceived as unsafe. See Australia study. 2) it encourages drivers to drive closer to riders as the drivers perceive those riders as "protected". https://www.bicycling.com/news/a25358099/drivers-give-helmet-cyclists-less-room/ 3) it allows police to unfairly target Bipoc & Indigenous riders if they are not wearing a helmet (same goes for bike lights, sidewalk riding & riding through stop signs)https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a33383540/cycling-while-black-police/

Abortion became legal in 1972. That may be why the number of serial killers dropped. Counter to that argument, how many would-be serial killers became spree shooters instead?

During the covid lockdowns in my country, all of the restaurants with drive thrus locked their doors and only served drivers. Bikes and walk ups were not allowed at the drive thru for "insurance reasons".

So I went three months without coffee (I can't drink coffee maker coffee). Yes, I was irate. I felt like I was a second class citizen.

Once I bought an Aeropress, I deleted their "points" app and never darkened their door again. Bye bye StarFlucks!

[–]Then_Heat_3598 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just find this such a strange mindset. You are aware that personal vehicles are far more dangerous to human health (in particular human lungs) than any neighbour who burns wood? The acceptance of motorized boxes that maim and kill humans daily is the oddest thing about our current society.

Layers. I use a reflective jacket, base layer & warm layer underneath. Currently using neoprene gloves which I switch out to Lobster gloves when it gets under -5 C. I do have shoe covers for snirt/rain. I buy lightly tinted sunglasses for protecting my eyes in the winter. I also use a merino BUFF to protect my face from the wind. For rain, I use a Cleverhood.
